Avatar n tn She is 64 but she also has osteoporosis and arthritis in her lower back. The back doctor just prescribed Celebrex, is this the safest drug for her? Also what should people with Hep C do to better care for their liver eventhough so far she seems to have a healthy liver. For the osteoporosis she is on Fosamax. She has been on it for several years. I am just afraid that too many potent drugs can be harmful for her liver.

Avatar m tn This group of NSAIDs has the advantage of having fewer gastrointestinal side effects – less abdominal discomfort and less risk of gastrointestinal bleeding, than conventional NSAIDs. There are three different COX-2 inhibitors currently available to the public– Vioxx, Celebrex and Bextra. COX-2 inhibitors have been associated with some liver dysfunction, although not as commonly as other NSAIDs. Recently, Vioxx has been removed from the market due to heart-related problems.
Avatar f tn Does anyone take celebrex?I started Prozak last week and they want me to take celebrex too. They say my liver can take it, (stage 2 fibrosis). But I am afraid of the NSAIDs in celebrex, any one else taking it? Oh, I am on Methadone too. I am having my first liver biopsy in the morning, so I will find out more about my liver. I am scared to death about it coz I have had so many problems lately.
Avatar f tn No, it would be unheard of for Celebrex to damage your heart valve. Celebrex and similar drugs do cause high blood pressure in many individuals, though. You might have gone forever and not known about the heart valve if you had not gotten high blood pressure from the Celebrex. Follow whatever advice the cardiologist gave you, and don't worry.
Avatar n tn I never had high blood sugar but recently after a 10 day course of celebrex for an inflamed shoulder muscle my fasting blood sugar shot up to 137. I read that celebrex has this side effect. Is it reversible?
Avatar m tn Okay' heres the deal. My boyfriend is supposed to take 10 MG's of coumadin sun. Tue. Thur. And Saturday and 12.5 Mgs Mon. Wed. And Fri. He doesn't have health insurance. We have found a doctor that is reasonably priced considering he doesn't have health insurance but his doctor won't write him for his blood thinners until he gets his INR. His doctor doesn't do the test in the office and it has to be done at the hospital where they want upwards of $150 to do the INR.

Avatar m tn I have visited the Cleveland Heart Clinic in 2007. I was put on coumadin because I had a small stroke after 12 hrs. of a-fib (prior to being put on sotalol). I no longer have a-fib on sotalol. I would like to get off coumadin and take 1 or 2 81 mg. aspirin instead. Do you think this would be prudent?
Avatar m tn He has to tell the physician he wants to get off coumadin and try another anticoagulant. Coumadin is the so-called "standard of care", and a physician will not suggest another treatment unless you initiate the request. Plavix is an alternative that enables you to live with a more varied diet. The downside is that Plavix is not easily reversible, wheras Coumadin is.
Avatar m tn Mom is 81 and has been on Coumadin for 5 yrs. Approx 1 yr ago, she had an upper GI bleed (dark stool) and required several units of blood. She was taken off Coumadin and stroked; symptoms . She was treated within 30 minutes with intravenous TPA, with near 100% recovery. Coumadin was restarted. 11 months later, Mom experienced trace bright red blood with diarrhea. INR/PT within normal range, and blood count was good. She was admitted and diagnosed with colitis.
Avatar n tn No good coumadin manager would force the patient to diet the dose of coumadin they have prescribed. A good coumadin manager doses the diet. That is why the diet needs to be consistent. If he is new to coumadin, tell him to be patient. It can take a little while to settle into a consistent INR. Few people are in the desired range right from beginning ACT. Dosage changes should be a little at a time or you get into a yo-yo situation.

Avatar n tn Should I be on coumadin for life if I had one A-Fib event most likley caused by over medication for hypothyroid, That situation is now ok. All of my conditions are listed below. 1.Five yrs. post double bypass. 2.Hypertension controlled. 3.Type 2 Diabetes controlled. 4.Hypothyroid. 5.Hiatal Hernia with barretts monitored. These conditions are well controlled and I am still working as a professional pilot. The A-Fib happened during my annual physical when the thyroid medication issue came up.
Avatar n tn The first thing to do is to politely ask her physician if he would consider other protocols than coumadin. Among other problems is it often very difficult to maintain consistent levels. I have discussed coumadin in other posts. The physician has to suggest coumadin, because that is the current "standard of care". If the PATIENT pops the question, he can then discuss other alternatives (they are there), which do not provide as much anti-coagulent action, but permit a normal diet.
