Without knowing your background or what you're doing to control and manage your diabetes a few questions comes to mind. 1. Have you taken a diabetes class? If not check with your local hospital whether they offer one. Most do. Your doctor may know of one too.

Science has been saying that saturated fats(SF) can increase the risk of heart disease, though, lately that looks like it may not be as true as we all thought. However, for simplicity's sake, let's say it's still absolute that SF is bad for your heart. On the other hand monounsaturated(MUF) and polyunsaturated(PUF) fats are good for you and lower your LDL while raising your HDL.

If you eat things with a lot of saturated fat, cutting that out should lower your LDL levels. Things like butters, oils, and foods cooked in grease are generally higher in saturated fat. How do I know how many NET CARBS are in a food? Personally, I like caloriekingdotcom for looking up foods but you can also use a paperback book of foods w/nutritional analysis or read those government analysis labels on packaged goods. Decide on your personal goal for total daily intake of NET CARBS.

I feel my doctor just took things lightly and feel that perhaps he did not give met he correct information.. My total was 148.. my ldl were 100 and my triglcerides were 52.. my hdl was only 37!!!! 6 years ago my total was i think 176, ldl 98 tri's were around 111 and hdl was 59... what would cause it to go down so much in 6 years...
Tbd Sugars do not increase LDL cholesterol, nor do empty carbs like bread, pastas and alcohol. These have very little impact on TC unless in the presence of small particle LDL, even then it's not much of an impact. To lower LDL cholesterol by diet means eliminating fats, not sugars. Diet only plays a roll in 10% of one's cholesterol levels, beyond that it is necessary to reduce how much is created in the liver or how much is eliminated via HDL.

I think I recall my Dr. saying if I ate carbs even prior to the fasting, that could cause a higher false reading in the Triglyceride test...I think?? (I can't ask him cause I don't have insurance any longer). Anyhow, erring on the side of caution, my Triglyceride level in Jan 2010 was higher than normal.
Avatar f tn cholesterol increased, but a more common reason can be from a lack of exercise, not taking a statin, diabetes issues, an increase in carbs or fat in the diet, and much more. Cholesterol control is a holistic matter of diet, drugs and exercise in my opinion.
225237 tn?1333138999 Ok, I just had a re-check of my cholesterol and my total cholesterol is down but my triglycerides are up (259?)!!!! My doctor wants to re check in three months to see how my level are to see if I need medication but wants to give me some time first. How do you get your triglycerides down????? What can I do???? I don't want to have to take a statin drug!!!! Thanks for any advice!!!

Avatar n tn 80% of your cholesterol levels are due to heredity. 20% is from diet. A diet high in simple carbs or carbs in general can make your cholesterol and triglyceride numbers to go high. This is where people get confused. They think if they follow a low fat diet they will be fine. Not always the case. 6.2 is high. I can't understand why your doctor think's you are too young for statins. Get another opinion.
