Common Questions and Answers about Carbohydrate counter for the atkins diet

carbohydrate

Avatar n tn This is logical for the type 2 diabetic, for eating a fairly low-carbohydrate diet would not require the production of as much insulin by the already stressed pancreas. However, if insulin resistance is the main problem for a type 2 diabetic, then lowering the carb count may not really be the solution, and medications to help the insulin-resistance problem still may be needed.
Avatar f tn can you pls tell me the effect the atkins diet has on heart issues and heart rythmm??

219363 tn?1189755821 I have recently started a low carbohydrate diet with calories maybe 1500-1800 daily and 20 carbs maximum. My intake consists of vegetables, lean beef, chicken, pork and fish. I also eat eggs and 4 oz of cheese daily. I am losing weight on this plan. I had a headache at first, but it has gone away. I have more energy and sleep better, and have less aches and pains. I have lost 9 lbs, and want to lose about 30 lbs more. Is this safe and should I worry about any supplements.
550805 tn?1215030875 t the first time I have been on the Atkins, though it is the first time since I have began suffering from Anxiety. This diet causes you to feel a bit "flighty" in general, a little light headed, and tired.....until your body gets used to it. All of these things can make one with Anxiety confuse the symptoms of the diet with the symptoms of Anxiety. Make Sense?
1715838 tn?1330648200 Hopefully others who use the MH Diabetes tracker will come along and provide you with tips. In the meantime you can download the Atkins carb tool by Googling "atkins carbohydrate counter list". The food list is quite extensive and detailed and is 106 pages.
Avatar n tn They are pricier than Smart Ones or other brands like that, but the Atkins diet is low carb so these meals VERY little carbs and lots of protein.
1464587 tn?1307491605 or none if you can, good proteins and high fiber. A couple people refered to it like the atkins diet, since atkins seems to I think concentrate on meats (proteins), low fats, and little to no carbs. And thank you soooo much jackie on that chocolate refernce!! I will so look for it the next time I'm at the store =D And the meat I have is very little, just once a day, and half the portion of my veggies =) and it is very lean.... maybe 2 grams of fat per night. And as far as the egg whites..
Avatar f tn The South Beach program also has a low-carb version of their diet. In my opinion, both the paleo diet and the low-carb version of the South Beach diet are low-carb diets that are very healthy. Good luck.
Avatar f tn Most important is to control and manage your diabetes. Then limit your carbohydrate food intake for weight loss. Use Google to search and understand the difference between 'simple carbs and complex carbs'. Go to the Atkins web site for low carb information and recipes. Click on programs to get started. http://atkins.com/Homepage.aspx Pay careful attention to your breath, your body odor, or urine if any starts to have a fruity sweet smell.
Avatar f tn Exercise, even walking, will go a long way toward keeping it lower. The body uses glucose in the blood for fuel before it uses other sources, such as insulin, to control the glucose. Try to watch your carbohydrate intake. 1 mg sugar = 1 mg of carbohydrate. Of course watch your sugar intake. Regular soda and sweet tea should not be part of drink selection. Alcohol should also be avoided. Though an occasional drink is OK.
Avatar n tn A low carb diet may help futher. You can look at Atkins style diet, or Dr. Richard Bernstein, which is specifically tailored for people with diabetes. Optimal A1C to prevent further damage is ideally below 5 (normal is 4.1 - 4.6), or as close as possible. Don't give up. Your lifestyle changes are only helpful, but unforunately diabetes can be progressive. However, it can be managed.
Avatar f tn I control it with diabetic diet. Eating slowly absorbed carbohydrate only in the morning, 25 g. Then 20 g az 10:00 am, half slowly, half quickly absorbed. For lunch 50 g, half-half. Az 3 pm 20 g, this can be only quick. At 5 pm I should eat dinner, 40 g carbohydrate, one third quick, the rest slow. And at 9 pm I eat 20 g slow only for the night.
Avatar m tn I've done the Atkins with amazing results. However, when I do the Atkins, something about it makes my blood pressure a little higher and my heart rate easier to raise. Running up the stairs isn't such a big deal normally, but on Atkins I feel like my heart is trying to jump out of my chest. I can easily lose 40 pounds in a few months on the Atkins, and while I generally feel better (look better/breathe easier), my symptoms feel a little worse.
594189 tn?1386916607 Millions of American women are now trying the Atkins Diet or the South Beach Diet. While these diets are an improvement over the conventional low-fat, high-carbohydrate diet, they can worsen your metabolic problems, because dieting itself is stressful to the body. So many women need to heal their metabolism first before even considering weight loss. Another cause of food cravings is adrenal fatigue.
Avatar m tn In fact, the best diet for depression is probably something not that far from the Atkins, very low carbohydrate diet. When I talk to my patients about the Atkins I point out that it is true that the induction phase (especially the first four days) is a bit like the first few days of quitting smoking in terms of cravings, after that they can expect their sweet craving to almost magically disappear.
Avatar f tn Does she have a buffalo hump on the top of her spine, where the spine meets the neck? The areas where you say she has weight gain can occur with high cortisol levels - cortisol comes from the adrenal glands that sit on top of the kidneys. I've also read that PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome) can mimic high cortisol weight gain. PCOS is associated with carbohydrate intolerance. It's possible the South Beach diet isn't restrictive enough for her. She might need Atkins.
Avatar m tn I've never heard of the diet - maybe it works or maybe it doesn't - everyone is different. But since you like meat alot, why don't you read up on the Atkins diet or the South Beach diet. These diets are low carbohydrate diets. Eating low carb avoids the constant stimulation of insulin. The first few weeks of the diet help in getting rid of insulin resistance. Many people say goodbye to their medications on this diet.
Avatar f tn I keep a bowl of sliced radishes, celery, carrots, etc sitting on the counter most of the time, so whenever I walk by, I can grab a few slices to munch on. This keeps me from being so hungry at meal time. I also keep a large tumbler of iced lemon water on the counter and I sit at that whenever I walk by, as well. Drinking water keeps me hydrated and helps keep me fuller. And of course, there's always exercise.
4054761 tn?1349368749 I agree that most diets that deprive one of a complete food group are not good, because the body needs the nutrients from all groups. Plus once the diet it kicked to the curb, the weight usually comes back. There are 2 types of carbohydrates; the simple ones, that include things made from refined sugar, flour, white rice, etc. These carbs raise your blood sugar quickly, and if not burned off right away, will be stored as fat.
Avatar f tn We have has some success with the Atkins diet but again, not great. Local GP not much help, anyone got any suggestions?
Avatar f tn You have several choices of diet that are about equally effective - a very low carbohydrate diet (Atkins), a very low fat diet (Pritikin), a portion control diet (Weight Watchers), and a diet focused on eating bulky foods (Volumetrics). The very low carbohydrate diet works somewhat faster, but you are more likely to regain weight with that approach... so if you do that pay particular attention to planning the transition from diet to "maintenance"...
Avatar m tn Harvard researchers put pre-obese people (they had just lost 10-15 percent of their body weight) on three different diets—a low-fat, high-carb diet; a low-glycemic diet with fewer carbs; and a high-protein, high-fat, Atkins-style diet. Each participant ate the same number of calories on each diet, yet at the end of the study, they found that people burned the most calories at rest while on the Atkins diet.
Avatar n tn Hyperadrenocorticism and other endocrine disorders, such as hypothyroid can change eating habits. Hyperadrenocorticism (Cushing's disease) is a disease that occurs commonly in aging pets and can cause a voracious appetite. This disease requires special blood tests and cannot be diagnosed by routine blood work. Treating for G.I parasites with Panacur and Drontal may help even if no parasites have been identified in fecal analysis.
732164 tn?1237118767 I had a lap band and the diet you have to follow for that is a modified version of Atkins. It's all about low carbs, high protein, but its also low in sugar/fat. I did really well with it and am doing it again. I posted before that I don't really feel like my lapband did TOO much good, its just as much diet/exercise after as it was before. But the protein definitely fills you up more than the carbs.
Avatar m tn Atkins has more research on it than any other diet because it was developed originally to prevent heart disease (the creator, Dr. Atkins, died of heart disease!) The research showed that the diet did not work in the long run and was unhealthy in the long run, as it's too high in protein and too low in antioxidant rich foods. That's not to say it doesn't have its champions, but it hasn't panned out as hoped over time.
Avatar m tn Due to stomach problems, I have decided to try a Specific Carbohydrate Diet. Has anyone experienced relief on this diet? So basically, this is what I got from it- fresh vegtables, fresh fruits, lean meats, most nuts, NO LACTOSE, NO SUGAR (except in fruits and honey), and NO STARCHES. Is this about right? Also, what is the policy on yogurt and coconut milk?
1159480 tn?1263405571 m glad to see some positive talk about the Atkins/lo carb diet. I went on the Atkins diet about 6 years ago. I lost about 50 lbs. Once you get used to it, it's easy. And, I kept the weight off for the 6 years. I only gained back a few pounds when I started eating carbs again. You really get used to not eating alot of bread and sweets and it does not bother you after awhile. Unfortunately, what killed me was menopause. I gave in to the cravings for sweets and gained more weight back.
