Common Questions and Answers about Carbohydrate counting diet guide

carbohydrate

Avatar f tn When used in larger amounts, as in cooking and baking, these calories and carbohydrate should be accounted for by carbohydrate counting or by using starch/bread exchanges. As an example, one half cup of SPLENDA® Granulated contributes 12 grams of carbohydrates and 11 to 20 grams are counted as one starch exchange. In SPLENDA® No Calorie Sweetener Packets, sucralose is combined with maltodextrin and dextrose. These ingredients contribute 1 gram of carbohydrate and four calories per packet.
Avatar f tn As you exercise you are building lean body muscle mass which weight more than fat so a scale will reflect no weight loss when in fact the body is trimming down fat. Measure your waist and hips as a guide for trimming down. The tape measure will measure loss of inches and your clothes will start to feel looser. When you skip meals the body will go into ‘starvation mode’ to protect itself.
Avatar f tn While it is normal to have a rise in blood sugar level after a meal, excessive rise in blood sugar levels could indicate inappropriate dosage/ timing of injecting the insulin or excessive or inappropriate proportion of carbohydrate in diet. You could start by slightly lowering the carbohydrate and increasing the protein portion of diet. If this does not seem to help, I would suggest consulting your treating endocrinologist for adjustment in dosage/ timing of the insulin. Hope this is helpful.
Avatar n tn A little while ago i had a nondiabetic doctor recommend a low carbohydrate diet to help keep my blood sugars low and when i mentioned it to my endocrinologist she said that that type of diet puts extra strain on the kidneys and since diabetics are already prone to kidney problems they should avoit it. i would recommend that at your next doctor appointment you ask to be referred to a dietician to go over the proper diet aspects for a diabetic.
Avatar m tn if possible , start carbohydrate counting. You may need to buy a basic scale in order to measure raw materials going into your curries and their carbohydrate count. The net has number of sites which can help in calculation. Best of health.
Avatar m tn Due to stomach problems, I have decided to try a Specific Carbohydrate Diet. Has anyone experienced relief on this diet? So basically, this is what I got from it- fresh vegtables, fresh fruits, lean meats, most nuts, NO LACTOSE, NO SUGAR (except in fruits and honey), and NO STARCHES. Is this about right? Also, what is the policy on yogurt and coconut milk?
Avatar n tn This is logical for the type 2 diabetic, for eating a fairly low-carbohydrate diet would not require the production of as much insulin by the already stressed pancreas. However, if insulin resistance is the main problem for a type 2 diabetic, then lowering the carb count may not really be the solution, and medications to help the insulin-resistance problem still may be needed.

Avatar f tn I switched to an Atkins-like lifestyle about a year ago after being told I had be become a type 2 diabetic. I reduced my carbohydrate intake to less than 50 grams per day. I found that my overall heart rhythm improved and noticed a reduction in the number of PVC's.
Avatar f tn Hi Marcy180, I read your journal entry. You said you are ready to start a new diet. As an aside, have you discussed the fact that you are starting a new diet with your family doctor. It's always advisable to discuss any new diet with your doctor. You say, how many calories am I supposed to eat in a day? I live in Canada. So I use the Canada food guide to plan most of my meals. That's why it's a good idea to consult your doctor.
973741 tn?1342342773 I'm wondering about this topic. Does counting your carbs help prevent diabetes? An essential thing to do if you are worried about diabetes? What are the best ways to do this?
Business woman1 For example, when a person goes on a low carbohydrate diet they will lose weight very quickly, there will be fat loss and water loss. If you look at the word carbohydrate...the word hydrate is attached to the word. So our scale weights are intimately tied to our carbohydrate consumption. When someone loses 7 lbs in 7 days, it is physiologically impossible for that to be all fat. So how much of that is water, fat, muscle etc..
Avatar n tn Hi Lurius, Net carbs are getting lots of attention these days because of all the Atkins dieters, but it's actually long been an important concept for diabetics who do carbohydrate "counting" and then try to match our insulin to the amount of carbos we're eating. Foods that have carbos typically have a combination of carbos that we can metabolize (and therefore will affect our BG) and those that we can't (fiber). We subtract fiber from total carbs to get net carbs.
Avatar f tn There is not enough information in your post to provide a proper and full answer. "I watch what I eat and track it everyday." Which is what? People say "watch" but eat the wrong types of foods. Are you on a restricted carbohydrate diet? If no it's time you were. Are you eating starchy foods like potatoes, pasta, white rice, or foods made with white flour such as white breads and crackers? How are you controlling and managing your diabetes?
Avatar m tn Since digestive enzymes were helping you earlier, you definitely have some enzyme deficiency related to carbohydrate metabolism. Diarrhea is the commonest and significant presentation. Treatment is restricting carbohydrate diet. You can consult a nutrition specialist to find which carbohydrates you can take and which you should eliminate. Take care!
Avatar n tn I have been diagonised with low Blood pressure. Can u suggest a suitable diet to regain normalcy?
Avatar f tn Hi. Diet, exercise, and adequate sleep can all affect anxiety and depression. So can some drugs, physical conditions, and alcohol intake. I don't have much experience with the benefits of certain foods, but even with the things already mentioned, you could have a physical or mental condition that requires medication or other therapies. As such, I would recommended a professional evaluation to narrow down the cause of your symptoms, as well as determine what treatment would be helpful.

Low-carbohydrate foods such as meat, chicken, turkey, shellfish, non-starchy vegetables, and certain nuts are emphasized instead. As symptoms subside, the carbohydrate total of the diet is often gradually increased. * Avoid foods containing any type of yeast.
Avatar f tn Check out the specific carbohydrate (SCD). I found out about this diet on YouTube (Crohn's boy). He started SCD and he got rid of his symptoms and could stop taking medication.
