Against popular medical advice that stated that we should cut fats and proteins, Atkins advocated a diet rich with proteins and fats and very few carbs. There are now many other popular low carb diets available - many are very similar to Atkins.

687527 tn?1227108766 Less carbs more protein. I don't think the all Atkins diet is healthy for but for someone with sugar issues you may want to eat foods that are low on the glycemic index. Don't cut carbs entirely as that isn't a good idea, just try to replace some carbs with proteins. Look up the glycemic index in the internet and try eating more of the foods that are low on that chart. Sweet potatoes are a carb but are actually low on the glycemic index so are actually really good for you.

Each participant ate the same number of calories on each diet, yet at the end of the study, they found that people burned the most calories at rest while on the Atkins diet.
Avatar f tn Also, eliminate as much unnecessary sugars from your diets, or limit them to infrequent treats. Find fruits that are low-glycemic options. Kick high-fructose corn syrup out for good! Avatar m tn Dr. W. I'm sure you've heard the phrase "fat and happy." Well, it's not just folklore. The same carbs that make you fat (and contribute to diabetes and other problems) also make you happy. It's simple science: Carbs allow more of the amino acid L-tryptophan to penetrate your brain. The L-tryptophan triggers your brain to make more serotonin, and the serotonin makes you feel happier. It's as simple as that!
Avatar n tn Carbs raise BG so restricting carbs will help BG. when you say 6 units I assume you mean 6 exchanges which is 90 gr of carbs. If you take 250 mg at each meal that is 750 mg a day, the limit is 2400mg a day so you have room to go up on the Met. It can take 6 to 8 weeks for met to become fully effective.

Avatar n tn Many people with diabetes find that a low carb diet (est. 100 g/day) or even a very low carb diet (est 40 - 60g)/day works for them. The carbs come mainly from non-starchy vegetables. You will have to work out by trial and error (using your meter) what works for you. Also you will need to check out how to properly dose both basal and bolus insulin. Look up dr. Richard Bernstein. His book is called diabetes solution.

Avatar f tn My daughter got T2 in her 6th month. She has one month remaining. Were you T2 before your became pregnant? My daughter has made an amazing impact on her glucose levels, by doing what I do: Treat carbs like they're a poison to your body. I don't calculate glycemic loads, or consider good carbs and bad carbs. Rather, I avoid them entirely if at all possible. Now... I live on handfuls of almonds, peanuts, walnuts, and cashews. Cheese!.
Avatar f tn Thanks for the reply. I have decreased the carbs a lot, choosing mostly low-glycemic carbs. However, I've been shocked at the big increases in my blood glucose when I've eaten even relatively small (compared to previously) amounts of some carbs, whether high or low glycemic. Yesterday, for example, I had a fasting BS of 244 in the morning.
