Avatar n tn Hi Lurius, Net carbs are getting lots of attention these days because of all the Atkins dieters, but it's actually long been an important concept for diabetics who do carbohydrate "counting" and then try to match our insulin to the amount of carbos we're eating. Foods that have carbos typically have a combination of carbos that we can metabolize (and therefore will affect our BG) and those that we can't (fiber). We subtract fiber from total carbs to get net carbs.

Avatar n tn Strip out 4 carbs of fiber and 3 carbs sugar alcohols and you have a 4 carb cake. Before anyone points this out, they have 140 mg of sodium (take out the real sugar, you need something to bind it together). I've seen Adkins bars the same size with 800 mg of sodium, so I don't think 1 or 2 cakes will harm you. Just don't over do it.

193609 tn?1292180293 ve never been into the whole low carb craze and always knew it would be a way of life I would never be able to stick with for the rest of my life. Personally, I have anywhere in the mid to late 100's and sometimes even well into the low 200g carbs a day and have for the last year and a half and yet I've lost 165 lbs. I lost my weight by exercising and counting calories. Losing weight is really just a simple math equation and comes down to calories in vs calories out.
Avatar n tn I have had type 2 diabetes for 16 years and have always had trouble with my levels. An uncontrolable brittle diabetic my doc calld me. Playing defense taking 3 different types of insulin a day all day. Recently my doc changed my insulins to 1 toujeo but it is impartive that I take fast acting with every meal according to the carb count.I have no idea what I'm doing. And despite my efforts they still sky rocket after I eat.
973741 tn?1342342773 I find that finding some low carb treats that I can enjoy helps a lot with sticking with the plan. My weakness is actually chocolate. So, I buy the very dark chocolate (around 85% cocoa or higher). This is so rich and satisfying that just 1 piece is usually enough. There are plenty of great recipes for low carb foods these days. For example, instead of having spaghetti and meat sauce, I have spiralized zucchini with meat sauce.
Avatar n tn Sugar substitutes or non-caloric drinks will not affect your blood sugar, but I would consume in moderation. You may want to speak to a registered dietitian or contact the American Dietetic Association. Foods containing sugar alcohols have given me an upset stomach when I have eaten too much.
975357 tn?1252704723 Xylitol is roughly as sweet as sucrose with only two-thirds the food energy. As with most sugar alcohols, consumption can result in bloating, diarrhea, and flatulence, although generally rather less so than other sugar alcohols like sorbitol. I have not noticed any detrimental side effects and I highly recommend to anyone who wants to avoid sugar.
Avatar n tn I AM A TYPE 1 DIABETIC FOR 36 YEARS(SINCE AGE14) I HAVE BEEN ON AN INSULIN PUMP FOR THE PAST 9 YEARS. MY BS CONTROL HAS ALWAYS BEEN VERY ERRATIC NO MATTER WHAT I DO. HOWEVER, I AM HAVING SEVERE PROBLEMS WITH THE LOWS. MY BLOOD SUGAR WILL SUDDENLY DROP FROM THE 80'S OR 90'S TO THE 40' OR EVEN 30'S. AS A MATTER OF FACT A FEW DAYS AGO I WAS TAKEN BY AMBULANCE TO THE HOSPITAL BECAUSE I HAD A SEVERE HYPO EPISIDE. IT TOOK A LONG TIME FOR THE NURSES, DOCTORS,...
1533382 tn?1357962152 I'm 31weeks 3 days pregnant and last week I found out I have gestational diabetes. I've been on a 'carb counting' diet ever since and have to check my sugar levels 4 times a day keeping it in a certain range. I've noticed over my week of this diet that anything that's actually a full meal, be it mostly protein and no carbs or under my carb limits spikes my levels.
362249 tn?1441315018 Sugars are included with the total carbs but both need to be considered separately. Sugar is a simple carb that goes almost straight to the blood and if not used quickly enough will turn to fat; therefore, if you have something that has, say, 26 grams total carbs, with 25 grams of sugar and 1 gram of fiber, it would be best to pass that up - none of us (whether diabetic or not) needs that much sugar.
Avatar n tn Low carb diets have been shown to be unhealthy long-term. Veggies are all carbs. Fruits are carbs. Complex carbs such as whole grains are the best source of long-term energy. Too much protein, especially animal protein, can cause kidney problems and is linked to a higher rate of cardiovascular disease.
1290943 tn?1272093764 My daughter was diagnosed earlier this week and we are struggling with the carb counting still. She has her first endo appt on Monday but I feel like her numbers are all over the place. I felt a lot better about my 'abilities' to count carbs after reading about this Dawn Phenomenon.... anything else I should know? My biggest question is what to feed her in the morning. She SPIKES if she eats cereals (which she prefers) and I'm not crazy about all the sugar anyway.
Avatar n tn Would start out by just trying to stay calm and eat low carb food initially ; the hospital throws this crash course at you about carb counting ; what 22 year old wants to think about carb counting??? the big issue is so much bigger than this . it will soon be something that he instinctively can estimate and knows what foods will satisfy him at the time and how much insulin he needs. It is a mind boggling experience.
Tbd sweeteners may be better - these include stevia, monkfruit, and sugar alcohols such as erithyritol and xylitol (some people have tummy problems from these - and note they are toxic for dogs).
Avatar n tn If you would like to follow me I eat low carb I eat 30 carbs a day bc I had JD and my dad died at 53 from complication to diabetes so if I eat 30 or less carbs a day my A1C is 5.3 when I eat carbs it's about a 8 so that's my happy number.
Avatar f tn Post eating blood maximum sugars to be perfectly normal should be less than 100 (though this may need to be in combination with a lower carb diet). Certainly one should not see post eating numbers higher than 120. Non-diabetic completely normal Hba1c should be 6.5 will get you an official diagnosis. Prevention (type 2), low carb or ketogenic diet, exercise, weight normalisation. Hope this helps.
