Other people just count total carbs. i guess it depends how much detail you want to go into. Fibre should have little impact on blood sugar as by definition it cannot be digested. For weight and blood sugar management controlling how much carbs you eat each day is an essential part of management.

I find that finding some low carb treats that I can enjoy helps a lot with sticking with the plan. My weakness is actually chocolate. So, I buy the very dark chocolate (around 85% cocoa or higher). This is so rich and satisfying that just 1 piece is usually enough. There are plenty of great recipes for low carb foods these days.

Calorieking.com is a good resource for carb listings in addition to what's on packages (and be sure to correctly measure servings). In order to gain weight you want to increase your protein and fats so that you can gain weight without increasing carbs.

Avatar n tn Does that website have a listing of foods with CHO's only? It looks like they have alot of stuff including a hefty membership fee. I'm always sorry to see that. What I want is a list that only has carb counts of many many foods. I have a book or two with that but I want it online, ready for me to cut and paste and make it customized for my twin daughters.

Eggs are about the best for the morning as for many of us it is the time we can eat the least carbs. Has she figured out her insulin:carb ratios? Mine are definitely lower in the morning (mine are 1:7, 1:9 and 1:18). Btw this is the Type 2 forum!

Avatar m tn You most certainly need to learn about carb counting and how food affects your blood sugar by trying different foods and then testing two hours later. You say you are on Lantus (basal insulin). If your numbers are consistently high after eating you are likely needing to go on a basal/bolus regimen and learn how to develop an insulin: carb ratio to suit your mealtime (bolus) dose to what you eat. John Walsh's book Using Insulin is excellent.
Avatar n tn Everyone is different. Sometimes a simple diet modification is suffice. Me, I'm a carb-o-holic. What I've found that works wonders for me is intermittent fasting. It allows me to eat some of my forbidden favorites without impacting my BG levels. There is a ton of information on intermittent fasting on the internet. The program was suggested by my wifes endocrinologist and I've never had better BG levels. its difficult at first but does become easier.
