Avatar n tn Hi Lurius, Net carbs are getting lots of attention these days because of all the Atkins dieters, but it's actually long been an important concept for diabetics who do carbohydrate "counting" and then try to match our insulin to the amount of carbos we're eating. Foods that have carbos typically have a combination of carbos that we can metabolize (and therefore will affect our BG) and those that we can't (fiber). We subtract fiber from total carbs to get net carbs.

Avatar n tn The same things that work for non-diabetics trying to lose weight work for diabetics. Reduce caloric intake and increase exercise. Many of us believe in low carb eating and the lower carb you eat you will also lose weight. Be sure if you do this to reduce your insulin intake as it will also lower your blood sugar. Obviously lowering fat intake will also help lose weight and you will have to eat a lot more vegies, salads, and more lean meat (skinless chicken or fish) to compensate.
Avatar m tn com is a good site that lists carb counts for all foods. (you can also get them on labels of prepackaged foods). Many pre-diabetics and Type 2's have learned that carb reduction combined with exercise can keep blood sugar in range for a long time without the need for medication.

Avatar n tn Along with avoiding sugary foods a low to no carb diet plan is recommended for t2 diabetics. Carbs to t2 diabetics are the same as sugar - elevates our glucose [blood sugar] above and beyond acceptable levels. A very good place to look for low carb recipes is the Atkins [diet] web site http://tinyurl.com/atkins-recipes . Replace sugar with artificial sweeteners such as Splenda or Stevia.
Avatar n tn Hi i just recently read some very recent articles from doctors saying that the atkins diet could be a very good way of eating for diabetics because of the low carb approach that insulin is hardly affected. To me it makes sense cause i wouldn't mind my great aunt who is a diabetic to try the atkins or another low carb diet to help here with her blood sugar problems.

So for breakfast Im allowed about 15-30 carbs (1-2 carb choices) and I get the same amount for my 2 snacks between breakfast and lunch and between lunch and dinner. For my two larger meals I'm allowed about 45-60 carbs (3-4 carb choices).

I do not think there is anything wrong with low carb "MEALS" for a type 1 diabetic, but a Zero to Low Carb "DIET" might not be a good idea for a person living with type 1. Please seek advice from your son's Endocrinologist. As I stated yesterday, it sounds like he had been in the "honeymoon phase".

1436324 tn?1283698760 Dietary ketosis caused by fasting or eating very low carb is not the same thing as DKA (Diabetic ketoacidosis). DKA is a state of exreme and uncontrolled ketosis and will result after a period of time of very high blood sugars. People on low carb diets produce some ketones but it is not dangerous unless you have very high blood sugars consistently. Two very different things.

Avatar n tn All diabetics are very different, so what works for your blood sugar may not work for the next person. The best way to know what foods you can eat is to test, test, test. Eat a meal you usually enjoy and then test two hours later. If you are over 140 then you either can no longer eat those foods, or need to cut the portions. If you do a lot of testing for awhile then you will get more familiar with foods and how they affect you.
Avatar f tn Im diabetes 2 since 3 years a go, I used pills at the begining and 2 years ago my doc changed my treatment to insulin. Some days I wake up and my BS is high as today, was 225. Im using an app for counting carbs, yesterday I ate 220gs or carbs and my insulin dosis was 28 Levemir. I don't understad what failed, I know one unit of insulin works for 10gs of carbs. What could be the reason my BS is high? Every day I check my meals very carefully.
