Common Questions and Answers about Avandia and heart disease

avandia

Avatar n tn She is gaining weight, has trouble breathing, and has been experiencing some chest pains lately (Dr. gave nitro). She is on avandia and I would like to know if this could be the cause of her recent decline in health?
559053 tn?1274913374 GSK has maintained that its extensive research involving over 50,000 patients has shown that Avandia does not increase the overall risk of heart attack, stroke or death compared to other diabetes drugs. "We continue to believe that Avandia is safe and effective when it is prescribed appropriately," the company said in a statement.
Avatar m tn //www.rxlist.com/advair_diskus-drug.htm "Advair is an inhaled medicine used to treat lung diseases. Manufacturer GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) advises that all users of its Advair Diskus who have liver problems consult their physician before using the product. GSK has received a flurry of negative reports regarding the effects of its diabetes medication, Avandia, Significance GSK's Medication Guide advises that anyone with liver problems consult with their physician before taking Advair.
Avatar m tn increased risk of heart attacks, and for having GSK funded doctors on the avandia approval board, etc... I'm not making definitive statements that avandia is bad (or good)... just explaining my reasons for being cautious until lots of other people (who need it more urgently... for diabetes, etc.) try it out.
Avatar f tn Can I take Evening Primrose and Femara together? I'm also taking Avandia. Any thoughts would be great!
Avatar m tn I use Actos, but for some reason my fingers typed Avandia. Our FDA went through the same review on Avandia recently, and reluctantly left it on the shelf; however, it is used only when patients are found refractory to other, similar drugs, I believe. FlGuy, although I was down to 185 pounds at one point during treatment, I’m currently the lankiest 6’ 0” 250 pounder you’ve ever seen :o). I’ve always led an active lifestyle, so I don’t fit the sedentary profile of typical DM II patients.
2053416 tn?1330411192 Actos belongs in class of diabetes medications called thiazolidinediones. In this class are Avandia and a combination drug Avandamet [Avandia and Metformin]. Rezulin is in this class but not much known about it.
Avatar m tn [copy/paste] "For reasons still not identified, the long-term use of Actos weakens the respiratory tract’s immunity. This results to throat and respiratory infections like sore throat, sinusitis, coughs, and colds." Use with caution if you have heart issues. Also, Avandia is the other drug that falls into this classification. The FDA warns not to use Avandia for first time users, in fact, the FDA severely restricts its use.
Avatar n tn Due to our insurance company copays, we are spending more per month on diabetic supplies than we can afford. Is there a pharmacy that will accept what the insurance company pays and not require the copay? I know such things exist for Type 2 on Medicaid, but what about for type 1? Thanks!
1236243 tn?1277680851 ve been on Actos for 9 years and have no problems. Avandia is effectively off the market but ACTOS was not removed. The diabetic educator should know better that suggest someone get off a drug. Suggesting that he/she contact their M.D. was a good idea, but not necessarily required, unless the 'one man in the class' is having noticable adverse side-effects. Rumor monger statements and posts like this one are more scary than it actually should be.
95361 tn?1219870284 I take Metformin 850 x 3, Januvia 100mg (only for about the last two weeks) and just started on Avandia 4 mg for diabetes. My other meds are for thyroid, GERD, potassium, generalized dystonia (levodopa). Is this something I should be concerned about? I see my doctor in a week and a half, but do I need to contact her before then if this happens again?
Avatar f tn said she saw no reason for me to be on Avandia and i have since stopped useing it. It was never vy high, around 159 or so when it was diagnosed. If i am not careful of my diet it can jump up to the 130's to 140's. Am also on diovan for HBP which is usually under good control with the 1 med.
Avatar m tn Then 2 months later wanted to do the 70% blocked vessel, and I had no symptoms and felt quite well. I was shocked and asked why now! Why not at the time of the other implant? No sensible answer, and he moved to another state two weeks later!!! My current doctor tor the past 6 years has never mentioned a stent implant...I am totally on medication, and feel healthy with not 1 day of any illness not even a cold.
Avatar m tn For myself, I now, after going off Avandia, have an average of 99. I watch my diet, walk and exercise daily and have lost abt 20 lbs . My Dr put me immediately on Avandia but with the inexcusable news of the possibility of its affecting ones heart, i stopped using it. My new Dr. questioned my ever being on it in the first place.
Avatar f tn The structure of the heart and that includes wall dimensions, chamber size, valves, valve compliance, and heart functionality is evaluated and measured by ultra sound referred to as echocardiogram. A doppler test can be part of the echo examination and it color codes the blood flow through the heart and any backflow is easily identified (regurgitation). The heart functionality is determined by the percentage of blood pumped with each heartbeat and referred to ejection fraction (EF).
Avatar m tn I am going to undergo a Heart Cath tomorrow and possible stenting to try to increase blood flow to my heart. Hope it is not more than a proverbial 'crap shoot'. This discussion is related to <a href='/posts/show/1124718'>Low EF and MR</a>.
369861 tn?1306275686 I'm a newbie here on the heart disease site and not very sure what is going on. This all started with my getting sick and going to the ER thinking that I am having a heart attack. It turned out that my potassium was very low and my glucose level was low. Prior to this ER episode, my potassium level was hovering around 3.3 for about 4 months. At the ER it was 2.6! I had been on HCT 25 mgand Diovan Hct 320/25 mg for about 2-3 years. My primary doctor took me off the HCT.
Avatar f tn There may be a different perspective for analysis of Marfin disease or a bicuspid aorta valve. These conditions are a tissue disorder and are more vulnerable and there should be no heavy lifting and absolute control of blood pressure. Thanks for your question and if you have any further questions or comments you are welcome to respond. Take care, and I wish you well going forward.
Avatar m tn If the angioplasty was successful your doctor will tell you to resume your normal eating habits and activities. obviously a heart health diet is recommended as well as appropriate exercise.
Avatar f tn The rightside vetricle of the heart when enlarged is usually due to pumping againist high resistence of the pulmonary artery and/or lungs. This condition is oftened due to pulmonary artery thrombosis (clot) and/or pulmonary emboli (clots). Thanks for your question, and if you have any further questions or comments you are invited to respond. Keep us informed.
Avatar f tn on a Transthoracis Echocardiogram Test I have 3 valves Mitral, Pulmonary and Tricuspid regurgatating trivial and mild in the Tricuspid Valve. Does this mean I have Pulmonary Hypertention? I also had right atrium and right ventricular dilatation on a 2007 and 2008 report. This new report says decreased in size of the right atrium and right ventricular. Does any one knows what that means? How and why would it decreased in size and why would it be dilated in the first place.
