Avatar m tn However, it is not used in monotherapy, because of the rapidity with which bacteria develop resistance to it. I would also be interested in combination therapy, because my gut flora is already out of balance and Rifampin has been shown to prevent adverse GI effects of other antibiotics.
Avatar f tn You see, ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin, and Moxifloxacin are all in the same class of antibiotics and bacteria creates resistance to classes of antibiotics, not individual antibiotics.
Avatar m tn In that case your chances of catching anything are slim, furthermore taking antiobiotics for absolutely no reason can increase your resistance to antibiotics. So when/if you REALLY need to take them one day they might not work.
Avatar n tn Does the fact that I was feeling better and then suddendly felt bad again mean that the bacteria have become resistant to the antibiotics? And is it possible that this is something other than UTI or prostatitis? thank you so much in advance.
163305 tn?1333668571 —Cóilín Nunan, Alliance to Save Our Antibiotics News outlets reported Monday that UK government scientists have found a gene, known as mcr-1, that gives bacteria resistance to colistin, often used by doctors when other antibiotics fail. Such resistance was first discovered last month in China, and in the past few weeks, the resistance gene has also been found in Denmark, France, the Netherlands, Portugal, and in several Asian and African countries.
Avatar n tn Longer course of antibiotics needed probably 10 days minimum. There is a reason antibiotic resistance is emerging and it is due to doctors telling people they are fine after a short rx of ABX which wasn't long enough to kill it and thus spreading it with newly acquired resistance.
4865450 tn?1361294533 gov/books/NBK8438/ It does note that there is some antibiotic resistance among this group. It also lists a few antibiotics that can be used. Perhaps you can go through the list and check off the ones you have already tried and try the others. I think it is important though for you to know which bug you actually are infected with and what it is susceptible to antibiotic-wise.
Avatar m tn This is an interesting thing, while there are TMA smelling producing bacteria, there are also TMO (oxidized TMA) bacteria. If a biologist in the future can somehow engineer a way to increase the amount of TMO bacteria, then TMAU will become a thing of the past.
Avatar n tn Have you had cultures and/or PCR done to check for bacterial vaginosis? The bacteria that can cause BV can also cause PID and have a high recurrance rate. If you can get the doctor to culture for these organisms associated with BV and PID it may help:: BV: Gardnerlla vaginalis Mobiluncus species Atopobium vaginae Trichomonas vaginalis Mycoplasma hominis Ureaplasma urealyticum E. coli and other gut bacteria.
Avatar n tn Antibiotic resistance occurs when antibiotics no longer work against disease-causing bacteria. These infections are difficult to treat and can mean longer lasting illnesses, more doctor visits or extended hospital stays, and the need for more expensive and toxic medications. Some resistant infections can even cause death. Although experts are working to develop new antibiotics and other treatments to keep pace with antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria, infectious organisms adapt quickly.
Avatar n tn Dear Aj Thankyou for your response. Well, i have a urine culture and it came back "No Bacteria growth". About the ""chlamydia bacteria grows"; actually you mentioned this in your first response and i want to ask the meaning of this. Doctor has given me ofloxacin for 2 weeks (Already Finished) and now Cefixime for 3 weeks.
148588 tn?1465778809 The loss of antibiotics that kill or inhibit the growth of bacteria means that we can no longer take for granted quick and reliable treatment of rare or common bacterial infections, including bacterial pneumonias, foodborne illnesses, and healthcare-associated infections," the White House says in its report.
Avatar m tn Scary Stuff! "BOSTON – An infectious-disease nightmare is unfolding: Bacteria that have been made resistant to nearly all antibiotics by an alarming new gene have sickened people in three states and are popping up all over the world, health officials reported Monday. The U.S. cases and two others in Canada all involve people who had recently received medical care in India, where the problem is widespread.
Avatar m tn Regardless, I don’t suggest anyone to try all sorts of antibiotics now with Sb because it doesn’t heal PATM permanently and will only cause resistance to those antibiotics. However, if anyone has used some of them before I would like to know what you’ve observed.
4939681 tn?1361299299 It's likely a 'Herx', which is patient shorthand for 'Herxheimer reaction'. That happens when the antibiotics kill of a ton of the bacteria all at once, and then your body is left cleaning up the garbage of dead bacteria. Herxes happen worse to some people than others, and it varies in the same person over time --- it tends to lessen the longer you are on treatment, because there is less debris, due to fewer bacteria.
1691275 tn?1322327507 There are no contraindications whatsoever to taking two antibiotics and a strong arguement to continue with the first antibiotic as per doctor's orders and simultaneously take the second. There are slight variants in the way both antibiotics attack replication of bacteria. If you fail to complete the amoxcillin you risk developing an amoxcillan resistant strain. Generally medical practice is not to over-use antibiotics to prevent the development of resistant strains.
Avatar f tn A potentially dangerous sexually transmitted disease that infects millions of people each year is growing resistant to drugs and could soon become untreatable, the World Health Organization said Wednesday. . . Scientists reported last year finding a "superbug" strain of gonorrhea in Japan in 2008 that was resistant to all recommended antibiotics and warned then that it could transform a once easily treatable infections into a global health threat.
Avatar n tn Just to clear things up, I'm a man, it's not a big deal either way except it gives me a different perspective on these things. I did mention that 1g of azithromycin can have failures, but the truth is that still it will work most of the time. Actually azithromycin will nearly always work when it's taken for a longer period, like 500mg for 7 days. It's a good drug to use for treatment, it's just 1g is often not sufficient.

Avatar m tn Yes, they were prescribed, self treating is indeed a bad idea!
1070570 tn?1283436213 I haven't had the exact situation like you're talking about but I would think *normally* a GI specialist would put you on a powerful antibiotic that's not absorbed easily into the bloodstream like Flagyl for example. That's usually used for infections in stool, colon but each bug has it's own special antibiotic that is more effective than others. If you have ALL those (holy smokes..
Avatar f tn And eradicating the bacteria is important to do. When cross resistance is at its worst is when someone gets a prescription and takes it for only 4 out of the 10 days it is prescribed. That is when bacteria will start to mutate to outsmart the bug. I know so many people that do that. I know because they'll get sick again and say, "I have antibiotics left over from last time . . ." Um, you aren't suppose to.
