242516 tn?1368223905 The flu has passed epidemic rates in much of the country, and if you don't have a cold, I'm sure you have a friend who has the sniffles, fever, chills, aches and pains of a viral upper respiratory infection. This is different from a bacterial infection such as sinusitis, bronchitis, or pneumonia. A viral infection doesn't improve with antibiotics as these infections do. A virus hijacks your own body's healthy cells and uses it to reproduce and spread.
Avatar m tn I'm sick for 8 MONTHS. 26 years old male. My ESR is 45. I'm HIV negative. Pain in lymph nodes (neck, ear, jaw, armpit, chest). My head feels like I have very bad case of flu. Black under my eyes. I was diagnosed with "viral infection". I was given many antibiotics and last time I was given broad spectrum antibiotics. Crixan 500mg, Levofloxacin 500mg. Since then pain in lymph nodes little bit decreased. My head feels still the same, almost like drunk.
Avatar f tn It can be caused by bacteria like streptococcus or it could be a viral infection. Bacterial infections need antibiotics. Infections in the throat cause lymph node enlargement. As, it is subsiding with the infection, it is the most likely cause. Tonsillectomy is advised if there is recurrent streptococcal tonsillitis, recurrent peritonsillar abscess and chronic tonsillitis. Hope this helped and do keep us posted.
Avatar n tn It usually takes a few days for bacterial or normal viral tonsillitis to clear, but it can take weeks if mononucleosis is the cause. Because of possible complications associated with bacterial tonsillitis, doctors usually give antibiotics. One complication of bacterial infection, rheumatic fever, used to be common until doctors started treating bacterial tonsillitis with antibiotics. Group A streptococcus can spread through the body and infects vital organs, especially the heart.
Avatar m tn One medical society, the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA), regards Lyme disease as “hard to catch and easy to cure” with a short course of antibiotics. IDSA claims that spirochetal infection cannot persist in the body after a short course of antibiotics. The group also denies the existence of chronic Lyme disease.
Avatar n tn I am still trying to recover from viral infection. I thought that it was sinus infection. I was given Allegra but havent used it yet. Instead, I am using a nasal spray and just trying to do old fashioned remedies: humidifier, running hot showers to losen phlem. I have been sick for 6+ weeks now. Still feel terrible.
Avatar m tn The infecting agents are bacteria, fungi and viral. Bacterial infections need antibiotics and fungal anti fungal agents. Viral infections are by exclusion and do not need any antibiotic therapy. Ear canals can also get swollen due to allergies or injuries. Consult your primary care physician who will do blood tests and take a swab and may do a culture to determine the cause and prescribe appropriate medications. In the meantime you can take OTC pain medication Ibuprofen.
Avatar n tn I keep treating it with antibiotics. I have a feeling that my extreme smoking of cigarettes in a closed space might be a possible cause of my infections. I think I am overloading them with toxins. Anyone have any input on this. My main question is, Every time i get tonsillitis the doctor says it is bacterial infection. He does not take any cultures or anything, he just looks at it and says it. I think mainly because of the white patches or something he sees.
Avatar n tn Hi my little boy is 13months has had a chest infection gor 3-4 weeks he has had strong course of antibiotics for 7 days and had chest x ray where the right upper lobe presents with infection however the gps have said that as they don't know if it's viral or bactyerium they are not inclined to treat with more antibiotics. As he presents with no temp and is feeding and drinking ok. Yet i know he is not himself and is irritable obviously with discomfort.
Avatar f tn If you truly had a yeast infection, your symptoms would have gotten MUCH worse. Antibiotics cause yeast infections!!! If your symptoms got better on an antibiotic, then you probably had a vaginal bacterial infection like vaginosis (BV). I would give it some time and see if it comes back before your boyfriend performs any kind of oral sex. Yeast and bacterial infections are contagious, do you really want him getting it in his mouth?!
Avatar n tn if after this you are still feeling the same, then ask your gp for antibiotics to rid you of the infection, after you take the antibiotics, take probiotics to replace the good bacteria that the antibiotics has also killed.
Avatar f tn Is there a possibility that you've developed a secondary yeast infection due to the antibiotics? It's a pretty common to have that happen, and symptoms can be similar.
Avatar f tn Polyarthritis may be immune mediated, may be associated with fever and may be treated with corticosteroids in the absence of a proven viral or previous viral infection. It is the "immune complexes", basically antigen-antibody complexes that are themselves inflammatory in joints and in small vascular beds, such as the kidneys for example. Your doctor is best situated to parse all this for you, having direct knowledge of the case. To me, it sounds like you are in good hands.
Avatar n tn t know if the infection is viral or bacterial, and if bacterial what organism is the cause. I suspect you have a few capsules of amoxillan around and taking a "few" is the absolute positive worst course of action to take. You will end up (if the infection is bacterial) with an infection resistant to antibiotics. See a physician for a proper prescription and antibiotic. Many physician choose zithromax (the Z-pak) as the broad-spectrum antibiotic of choice for a lung infection.
Avatar m tn Fever may be attributed to a variety of issues also including both viral and bacterial infection. How long the fever will last will depend on the underlying cause. Additional test may need to be done if the results of the other tests are unremarkable. A referral to an infectious specialist may also help. Take care and do keep us posted.

Avatar m tn Bacterial infections need antibiotics and fungal anti fungal agents. Viral infections are by exclusion and do not need any antibiotic therapy. As the pain is worsening, you will need to consult your primary care physician who will examine you and initiate appropriate therapy. Hope this helped and do keep us posted.
Avatar f tn Hi, the symptoms described could be due to an infection, most probably streptococcal or a viral infection. Strep sore throat needs to be treated with an antibiotic as strep is a bacteria. Viral sore throat is best treated with rest, warm oral fluids and (OTC) tylenol (acetaminophen) or ibuprofen for pain.
Avatar f tn m 28 weeks and juat getting over a viral infection, sinus infection, laryngitis and pink eye, I was givin amoxicillin and was able to take tylonol, unfortunately that all...
Avatar f tn He is diabetic so his healing time is not as quick. Could a yeast infection cause the bacteria? He had been on heavy antibiotics at one time too and he is uncircumcised? Even though the doctor was NOT concerend about it being an STD I am still worried because of all the information that I have read. Please advise. Thank you!
Avatar m tn Part of the illness included an infection in the throat. The infection was cleared up with antibiotics but i was still very tired for a few weeks. Could this have been acute infection? Do people ever get sore throat that clear up with antibiotics during the window period? I know that antibiotics don't help viral infections but I wonder if it could have been an opportunistic infection. Is it common to have opportunistic throat infections during the acute phase?
Avatar f tn Lymph node enlargement is usually due to infections like bacterial and viral. The infection can be from the draining skin or the organs. Treatment is usually with antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medications. So, consult your primary care physician for proper clinical assessment. In the meantime for pain relief you can use OTC Tylenol (acetaminophen). Hope this helped and do keep us posted.
Avatar n tn You shouldn't treat yourself as it may be the wrong treatment. There are complications you can get from clindamycin also and it is not a good choice. If you have a viral infection you won't need antibiotics. If you had strep throat you wouldn't have an ear infection usually. It can happen but isn't usually the way it presents. Do you have a high fever? Pus in the throat, or rash?
