Amlodipine and beta blocker

Common Questions and Answers about Amlodipine and beta blocker

Avatar m tn Since late April it is averaging around 70. My concern is that taking both Amlodipine and a beta blocker may reduce my heart rate to an unacceptably low level. Do you consider the adding of a beta blocker to be the best course or, instead, should I try 1) increasing the Amlodipine to 10mg daily and/or 2) adding a duretic.
Avatar m tn I'll be interested in input on this question. I've taken Amlodipine for many years and always had a similar heart rate (fast but not out of control). Last April a cardiologist added a beta blocker to help control an intermittent irregular rhythm. It's worked for the arrhythemia but of course has also dropped my heart rate and blood pressure. I don't like to be on any more meds than really necessary.
Avatar m tn Hi there. Amlodipine is a calcium channel blocker and Propranolol is a beta blocker. Often medics are cautious when a Beta blocker is being stopped(Especially on higher doses). But in this case you have just changed to a different beta blocker (Atenolol) There should be no -problem. I have been around the block with lots of different bp meds. The one certainty is that they ALL have side effects. Some worse than others.
20857451 tn?1544018368 I have not opted for bypass surgery as my heart is responding well to medications eg Plavix, imdur,Beta blocker ,Amlodipine ,Ace inhibitor etc .Plant based diets with near zero oil ,egg whites, Once a week salman fish and Regular excercises etc are keeping me in good shape. Last stress test has shown increase in excercise time from 7min to 9min, Last blood test has below readings My total cholesterol 99 LDL 41,HDL 43,Triglycerides 76 LPa 40 A1c 5.
Avatar f tn I am using 2.5mg of Amlodipine (Calcium Channel Blocker) and 5mg of Bisoprolol(Beta Blocker) to treat my hypertension. I noticed when I took a calcium supplement that I felt real "hyper" and had heart races at night. I stopped the supplements but now I get the same reaction if I drink a large glass of milk. I also have side affects of reaccuring vivid nightmares. I have an upcoming physical, my doctor does not believe me.
Avatar m tn Your current meds are Lipitor for cholesterol control, Coversyl (Often problematic with a rough sounding cough as a side effect) Minax which is a beta blocker Asprin and Eliquis most likely for anti clotting purposes. Amlodipine for BP or your heart condition. The above are a fairly standard level of treatment for Heart conditions. Its no joke and these are serious medications. So be careful, you need to fully brief your cardiologist first, on this to be sure its ok.
Avatar m tn My BP was well-controlled on 100 mg Losartin and 7.5 mg Amlodipine, averaging around 125/68. At peak exertion, during a treadmill stress test recently, my systolic BP reached 215. My cardiologist subbed 5 mg Nebivolol for the Amlodipine due to what he described as exercise-related hypertension. I took this medication for a week and experienced a range of unpleasant side effects, including exhaustion, significant depression and reduced heart rate (mid-60s, compared with my normal mid-80s).
Avatar m tn A Calcium Channel Blocker, i.e. Amlodipine is NOT a Beta Blocker. It sounds as though you stopped the Beta Blocker cold turkey.
Avatar f tn org/diseases-conditions/high-blood-pressure/in-depth/high-blood-pressure-medication/art-20046280 He is currently prescribed a beta blocker, correct? https://www.medicinenet.com/beta-blockers_vs_calcium_channel_blockers/article.htm#what_are_the_different_types_of_beta_blockers_and_calcium_channel_blockers I think all of these drugs have side effects and the risk to benefit ration has to be applied. Beta blockers slow adrenaline. Beta blockers are also commonly given for facial flushing.
Avatar m tn This is not uncommonly reported by our male patients and this is also the reason why I don't use beta blockers in patients such as yourself. I would recommend either being on the diuretic only (hydrochoothiazine 25 mg daily), definitely stopping the beta blocker, and if the diuretic doesn't work well by itself consider ACE inhibitors or ARB's (losartan). You could also try various calcium channel blockers such as Amlodipine (norvasc).
Avatar f tn It took me about 3 weeks to wean off my beta blockers. My beta blocker was a very strong one, and I was only on 1.25mg, so halving this was impossible. The pills were tiny and couldn't be cleanly broken. I had to increase the time between each pill instead. First I went to one every 48 hours and after a week, every 3 days. After managing one pill every 4 days I could finally stop and it felt great.
Avatar m tn /242 age 67 sex male) and perhaps try a low dose beta blocker (which i despise and which i suspect caused me to go into permanent afib a couple years ago). i am not on any blood thinners other than aspirin as warfarin has no effect on me (trial dosage got up to 40mg per day before we all chickened out. highest inr was 1.2). what do you think?
Avatar m tn Thankyou for your response. I wanted to mention that I also had a nuclear adenosine stress test in July of 2010. I had just started taking metoprolol at bedtime in addition to the lotrel and hyrochlorthiazide. The cardiologist said to take it the night before the test since It was an adenosine test instead of treadmill testing. The conclusions of the Dr. were ejection fraction of 49% after administration of adenosine and no abnormal segmental wall motion abnormalities.
Avatar m tn //www.drugs.com/amlodipine.html. Vision issues are considered rare. Here is a comprehensive list of side effects: https://www.drugs.com/sfx/amlodipine-side-effects.html. It also lists red, irritated eyes as a side effect. I think I'd let your doctor know you are having watery eyes.
Avatar m tn i think the atenolol is causing me some side effects and i have and allergies and it might be making it worse and also want to start taking allergy shots but heard its not a good idea while on beta blockers. im looking for a list or names of a few calcium channel blockers that can also help my symptoms so i can talk to my dr about changing my meds..do calcium channel blockers have less side effects then beta blockers or are they safer?..
Avatar f tn If you are not responding to lisnopril and metoprolol is causing side effects then other beta blockers can be tried or you can be given diltiazem or verapamil. Heart ECHO, holter, or stress ECHO etc should be done. You should also get your blood cholesterol, lipid, triglyceride, blood sugar and thyroid levels checked. Please discuss this with your cardiologist. Take care! The medical advice given should not be considered a substitute for medical care provided by a doctor who can examine you.
Avatar f tn This is a common compaint with (at least) Metoprolol. It's the only one I've ever taken, so I can't compare. I gained almost 45 pounds which pushed my blood sugar into the danger zone, which I'm now on a diet to lose before I have to go on Metformin for that. I have 90 days to show an improvement. My recommendation to you would be to cut nearly all carbs from your diet. I restrict myself to less than 50 a day. That, and walk. I lost 5 pounds in my frst week on this regime.
Avatar n tn Come off the ARII blockers and start amlodipine, a calcium channel blocker.
Avatar f tn i do know that beta blockers are not for people with asthma, but i thought if anyone knows if i could take a low dose beta blocker for my anxiety and tachycardia and this low dose beta blocker would not affect my asthma too much. Currently, i am taking 2 mg. zoloft along with 1 mg. clonazepam up to 3 times a day as prescribed by my dr. These used to keep my heart rate down to below 100, but now they are not working as good.
Avatar n tn I've been taking amlodipine besylate (norvasc) for about 1 and a half months. For the last couple of weeks I've been experiencing very strong anxieties, panic attacks, and a totally sleepless night. I'd been on testim for years now as well and wonder if either one or a combination can be causing them.
675923 tn?1296238011 Naturally they slowed down my heart rate and I felt a bit run down. And that particular beta blocker was one I could not tolerate at all and it did cause personality changes. Atenolol was better for me.
Avatar n tn Hi - 49yo male in otherwise good health, had an mi and placement of 3 stents in RCA. Was told that there was no damage to my heart, and have returned to all activity including hi-intensity workouts (which I was doing pre-mi). I've put on about 30 "pity-pounds" (from 185 to 215) and despite increase in exercise and near-saintly eating habits, having a hard time losing. I suspect that Toprol is causing this problem.
Avatar f tn My doctor wanted me to take a beta blocker for migranes and for a recently found Mitral Valve Prolapse. The valve prolapse was really never an issue. I don't usually have negative symptoms from the mitral valve prolapse. Although the last five years of chest discomfort and fluttering during panic attacks could have been from the prolapse and not from just anxiety. Does the beta blocker keep my heart from getting worse?
