Common Questions and Answers about Ambien and mania

ambien

Avatar f tn *% is the only way to describe it! Mania and insomnia. Now I am better but my psychiatrist has put me on ambien 10 mg daily with klonopin as needed. I rarely take the klonopin as it appears that each day the "jitters" seem to be leaving me. I feel better as each day passes, yet I am concerned about withdrawing off ambien and if indeed I will be able to sleep on my own.
439168 tn?1307931740 I was already on zoloft. I also have an antianxiety medication to help with the mania and to help me to relax. I take it every day. The problem that I am having now is when the mood stablizer was taken away (due to intolerance to the medication), I have not been sleeping. I took ambien in the past, but I hallucinated with it. Does anyone know of any mood stabilizers that they are tolerating well? And sleeping medications or remedies that work for them?
Avatar f tn Ambien as needed for sleep. My mania seems to come at night the most and sleep is an issue. I was prescribed xanax for the mania as well. I'm very hyper. In the beginning, I was told no too. But when my new doctor saw how hyper I was first hand, he didn't have any problems filling the prescription. I also suffer from anxiety attacks. Thus, I was having one in his presence. The 1st doctor I saw, I asked for xanax because everyone in my family takes it....it works for them....
202665 tn?1248806733 Besides the medications I take for depression and BP (Cymbalta, lamictal, lithium), I've also been tking 50mg of Trazadone and 10mg of Ambien nightly for about 6 months. Sometimes it works...sometimes not. If I miss a certain window of time to take the night drugs...I'm wired instead of sleepy. I will stay up until 3-4a wandering around..eventually get a couple hours sleep, and still have high energy the next day...or couple days...until I crash.
1076976 tn?1333558365 Yes I would agree about speaking to your psychiatrist but that is unusual as Depakoate generally treats mania better than depression and for that reason I was very depressed on it and could not tolerate it. That said side effects that are common from medications are not the only ones that occur. Are you on any other medications, physical or mental? Speak to your psychiatrist about that so they can rule out any potential interactions as Depakoate has some.
Avatar n tn I am trying to get her to have her lithium levels checked but she thinks she is fine (part of the disease), she is not sleeping well and not resting, physically pushing herself which makes swelling and pain from RA worse (had to stop Enbrel, Arava and Methotrexate to begin chemo). Still using patch and morphine tabs for pain, ambien for sleep and there are more meds.
Avatar f tn I have a history of servere major depression and 10 yrs past was diag w/ mania. I have had many (unsuccessful) suicide attempts. As of late I am getting anxious and afraid of most things. I know my body/mind very well. I know when drugs are starting to "wear out". I have been under Dr.'s care since I was 12. I am fatigued, depressed , awake suicidal and lacking enjoyment. I do not work due to mania hitting when I try to. I care for my granddaughter 3-4 days a week.
Avatar f tn I think you should have a long talk with your psychiatrist about this. Ask them to schedule you for an hour at least to talk in depth about the risks and benefits of different meds. I would guess that the first step would be to try you on something that's reasonably safe in pregnancy, and make sure it's actually keeping you stable.
1267205 tn?1321117128 They put me on Zoloft for anxiety but that could send you into mania since you experience mania and I don't. There's also benzodiazepines but they are usually used as a last resort. Antipsychotics can be used for anxiety but I wouldn't recommend that because of running the risk for tardive dyskinesia. I would much rather have my severe anxiety than TD.
Avatar n tn Ambien will help you get some sleep so yes I would say it is good. I worked for a Dr. before and the highest dose I saw given was a total of 12mg. So if the tab was 6mg then the patient could take 2. Taking 2 10mg of ambien seems a little high to me.Maybe someone else could answer better than me. I am one of those people that ambien doesn't work. I have tried Ambien cr, Lunesta (sp?) and regular Ambien and still couldn't get any sleep.
574118 tn?1305135284 I do know that taking an antidepressant without a mood stabilizer can cause mania, also I take Mirapex (a dopamine drug) to help treat my fibro and I'm under "special watch" because the dopamine meds can cause mania even in people that aren't bipolar. My husband was taking Mirapex as well for his fibro and he had to stop because it made him feel manic, and he's not bipolar. So I can't speak for the seratonin, but the dopamine can definitely make someone manic.
202665 tn?1248806733 I changed from Olanzapine to Seroquel about 9 months ago, and its about the best thing I have ever done. For the first time in many years I feel as if I am in control of my life again. I take 200mg in the morning and 400mg at night. It was a bit sedating at the start, but now it's fine. I still suffer from depression, but all the mania and hallucinations, and voices have just about stopped. Julie.
Avatar m tn I'm no doctor, so I definitely can't give you any medical information on Ambien, but I can relay my personal experience with it. I've been on Ambien (currently 10mg) for SEVERAL years now (5 or more). I have many chronic pain conditions, including fibroymalgia. One of the major symptoms of fibro is insomnia - which I definitely suffer from!
1568041 tn?1311615212 Does she think it's an issue? Personally,I think Ambien is a dangerous drug to be taking all the time. But,if she can't sleep and hasn't increased her dose for a year, then this is her lifestyle. I don't agree with it either but I know insomnia can be just horrible. There are other things she can take. If she wants to try it, suggest Melatonin and Valerian root. It's safe and it works for a lot of people. However, anyone on SSRI's should avoid Melatonin.
574118 tn?1305135284 Well, some bipolar people do ok on ADs once they have a mood stabilizer, but not everyone. With the tryptophan, while it is a serotonin precursor, I'm not sure there's any evidence that it would do much. The blood brain barrier keeps a lot of things out of the brain, so there's no guarantee that any serotonin made would make it on up. I don't know if tryptophan would pass the blood brain barrier in a large enough quantity to make a difference or not.
Avatar f tn Please don't do anything without speaking to your psychiatrist. Lamictal is generally a very tolerable mood stabilizer. If you find you can't tolerate it speak to your psychiatrist. There are many viable options listed on the links page. As regarding mood stabilizers if you stop them the moodswings and full symptoms of mania and depression return. As for Ambien if you can't tolerate it you can ask your psychiatrist about changing it.
Avatar f tn Hello mom and welcome. Heroin and ambien are both central nervous system depressants. Taken together it is very dangerous as they both depress the respiratory and central nervous system. How old is your son? Does he live with you? How long has he been Abusing drugs for?
Avatar f tn At least 6-7 years at a pop and can stop it with very mild consequences. Some lack of sleep and maybe some headaches and neck/back pain but really nothing. Try OTC Advil pm or something maybe.
Avatar f tn Mostly happy and energetic enough to ride a bicycle and exercise regularly. But now the depression is longer and worse. I tried Cymbalta and too many side effects. I went off and felt better then certain triggers like toxic people bring me down. A change in routine sends me Manic. A few days ago I had to take 4 benadryl to come down off of it and stop it. So toxic people are absolutely not allowed in my life. I am seeing my Phychiatrist tomorrow to talk about what we can do.
337492 tn?1212458836 Yuck! So, I am doing awsome on Wellbutrin and Lithium and have not gone manic, but I am not sleeping at all! So, I thought adding a low dose of Risperdal is a good move? I was prescribed 1mg but after reading the horrible stories about the side effects such as lactation, weight gain and zombie head I split my tablets in half. Not perfect halves but close enough. I read more people had less side effects on .5mg. So opinions please??
Avatar n tn She is sleep/wake having conversations she doesnt remember and and having conversations with us that did not happen, Sleep walking, cleaning.... Is this common and should Ambien be prescribed to teens with PTS?
2176476 tn?1338605299 ve been taking Lamictal for about 7 months, along with a secondary anti-psychotic to after a major mania episode. I started on Seroquel for about 3 months, and the combination seemed to work well. I had to D/C the Seroquel when my insurance changed and it wasn't covered. Since then I've tried first perphenazine (4 weeks), then thiothixene (six weeks), but they were too sedating and I was having a problem working.
Avatar n tn phases where I make endless lists and various plans that I then abandon after days. I definitely experience some form of mania when drunk and I think in the time leading up to and before the drinking (I am anticipating the high). I have been this way for as long as I can remember so at this point, it is hard to tell. I just wonder about substance abuse and this sort of disorder. Does it cause it? Make it worse? Am I using alcohol to cope?
Avatar f tn Any medication can sometimes take a week or two or longer to take full effect while some will take effect instantaneously. It all depends on the person of course. When I took Geodon I sometimes would "drool and stumble" figuratively for the former (felt really dumb some days) and literally for the latter (dragged my feet and sometimes felt drunk).
Avatar f tn ) with or without them being married, female and male. and it rough stuff. and i know for a fact if i was to give in i will feel dirty and disgusted with my self. I was reading that this is common with bipolar patience. but it is getting out of hand. especially with other symptoms coming into play including always ever present my racing thoughts and what i am fear of my homicidal thoughts. every symptom that is listed i am having.
