Avatar m tn This condition is associated with bone pain, bone deformity, and an increased incidence of fracture. Involvement of the skull is associated with headache along with dysmorphic features. Until recently, the principal treatment has been resection or fracture repair, although the latter is often palliative at best. However, new insight into the molecular mechanism of fibrous dysplasia has led to the use of bisphosphonates to treat this disease.

Avatar m tn The prescription drug Fosamax (the generic is alendronate sodium) is a medication which has been prescribed to hundreds of thousands of postmenopausal women to treat osteoporosis and help increase bone mass thereby reducing the chance of spinal or non-spinal fractures. Fosamax has also been prescribed to increase bone mass in men with osteoporosis. Brand name Fosamax is manufactured in the United States by Merck Sharp & Dohme Corp., a subsidiary of Merck & Co., Inc.
Avatar f tn I took my first dose of Alendronate and then experience significant muscle pain for the next 4 days. Does anyone know if I should expect this to happen each time I take it or is it something to happen for the first few times until my body adjusts to the medicine?
Avatar n tn Do you mean Fosamax (alendronate)? If you do, its for treating bone problems like Osteoperosis by adding bone mass and slows bone loss. I use it for Osteopenia.
Avatar n tn s risk for developing osteoporosis as well as risk for bone fracture. Fractures are a result of both trauma and decreased bone strength. Bone strength depends on both the density (quantity) of the bone and on the quality of the bone. It is possible to fracture your tibia. RISK FACTORS FOR PRIMARY OSTEOPOROSIS Postmenopausal osteoporosis is the most common form of osteoporosis, and risks associated with low bone density .
Avatar f tn It used to be believed that patients with Osteosarcome (a bone cancer) who present with fracture are less likely to be cured than those Osteosarcoma patients without fracture. Thankfully, even those with fractures are still candidates for cure. The point here is that the risk of cancer spreading is pretty much a function of the cancer itself. Consider the scenario of a patient who complains of back pain and weakness of the legs.
Avatar n tn Also, would it perhaps be possible to add some alendronate, or something else to help her bone density and still be able to benefit from the thyroid medication? Thank you so much!
Avatar m tn As my openion according to CRVO that there is only cause remain is THROMBOSIS but other things like HYPERTENSION, DIABETIES, or VASCULITIS works as a Risk factors so it is written in different articles and boks as these factors as a cause of CRVO if it is right than can we say that the long bone fracture is the cause of CRAO in place of EMBOLI? or is there any difference in cause and risk factor or not?
Avatar f tn Firstly, root fracture need/ to be verified, which is best ascertained by CBCT. If there is no vertical fracture identified, remaining post may be removed and a new post and crown can be remade.however, there is potential risk involved during removing broken post. Seeing an endodontist is advised.
Avatar m tn [Epub ahead of print] Parathyroid hormone response to two levels of vitamin D deficiency is associated with high risk of medical problems during hospitalization in patients with hip fracture. Alarcón T1, González-Montalvo JI, Hoyos R, Diez-Sebastián J, Otero A, Mauleon JL. Author information Abstract BACKGROUND: Vitamin D and the parathyroid hormone (PTH) response play an important role in hip fracture patients.
Avatar f tn Many thanks for your response. It is tough to be uncertain just how severe an injury is, and to trust that professionals will prioritize appropriately.
Avatar n tn To clarify, this is your pelvis that was fractured and not your hip? Glad the treatment you had went well and you returned to full health. Returning to full health means getting back to activities that you want to do. Have you been strengthening the area once you were able? Did you work with a physical therapist? I would check in with your doctor but suspect you can start slow with running again.
Avatar m tn If you have a cheekbone fracture (malar bone fracture) then surgery to reposition the bone should be done as soon as possible (within a week or so of the injury) and before the bone heals. Once healing occurs, the ability to re-fracture and reposition it later becomes exceedingly difficult. While any surgery carries some risks, the risk for this procedure in the proper hands is quite small.
Avatar n tn Hi, Thanks for writing in. The common risk factors for non union of humerus fracture are open fracture, highly comminuted fracture pattern, significant displacement of the fracture fragments, smoking, diabetes, NSAID’s, infection and hypothyroidism. In your case, smoking could have aided in non union of the fracture, but there is a need to rule out other causes as well.
Avatar f tn Also, the screw holes definitely represent a weaker area in the bone, at greater risk for fracture, until they fill in; if they ever really do. Unfortunately, this is a decision that must be made on an individual basis by the patient and the treating surgeon.
Avatar f tn I am also taking Aromasin for bc. Stopped alendronate (I am osteopenic due to 30 yrs of prednisolone and Arimidex) in case this caused the oesophagitis. Would appreciate your advice.
Avatar n tn 30+ yrs of steroids has thinned my bones significantly, so I was prescribed a bisphosphonate (Alendronate) alongside calcium (Calcichew) and Vitamin D3. My hair is a lot thicker now. You might wish to get tested for Vit.D as I understand that some 50% of the population who do not live in sunny climates, are deficient. Not sure if it affects the hair though. Try googling "hair loss vitamin D" and see what comes up.
Avatar m tn m a martial arts practitioner and I would like to be able to use my fist without higher risk of breaking it again but my doubt is whether surgery would make metacarpi much straighter or not than it is now and if is there a risk of nerve damage that could worsen the state of my hand? A second opinion will be of great help, thank you!
Avatar n tn I have a non-union midshaft clavicle fracture. The fracture was the result of a Motorcycle accident nearly 6 months ago. (I am a 35 year old female) After the sling, the figure 8 brace, and an Ultrasound bone growth stim, still no union. I have an appointment on Feb 14 to review MRI results and talk about surgery. Are there options other than the Plate and screw procedure that my doc keeps telling me about?
Avatar n tn It is true that internal fixation will stabilize the fracture--surgeons think surgery and that is all they think about--waiting for the person to heal over time is not in their mentality and yes it is true if that fracture worsens bad things will happen. He could sneeze and if the fracture is that unstable he could get severe cord compression.
