1621722 tn?1333050499 Welcome to the forum. None of us are qualified to give you any sort of diagnosis, especially online. If you're using alcohol as a way to deal with anxiety and depression, you could be heading down a slippery slope. It already sounds as though you need to figure out exactly how bad your "problem" with alcohol is...and the sooner the better, before it gets any worse.
Avatar m tn I agree with markv, benzodiazepines are the pits, especially if you have a history of alcohol abuse. Have you tried Baclofen? That's a muscle relaxant, but since it works on the GABA receptors (just like alcohol does) it takes away a lot of the craving and because it is (distantly) related to benzos, it also helps with anxiety.
184420 tn?1326739808 Even though alcohol and HCV use different pathways the resulting damage can be identical. Advanced liver disease caused by alcohol abuse or HCV can result in an enlargement of the liver. I agree with you that given his symptoms a prognosis of 5 years is too generous timewise in all likelihood. At his stage of the disease a biopsy would expose him to an unneccessary risk as he is displaying symptoms of advanced cirrhosis. Jaundice appears most frequently as one nears complete liver failure.
Avatar m tn no matter what, a doctor will likely go with a long taper and it will be very important to not ever add alcohol into that mix....something an alcoholic will find very hard not to do, ulcer or not.
Avatar f tn Becoming free from alcohol is a very doable thing. But remaining free from alcohol takes work. I had to take part in my own recovery and work on myself so I would change. If I don't change nothing changes. Nobody could do that for me. But there are millions of us in recovery all over the world. So freedom for you is out there waiting. Keep your willingness and continue to make the steps in the right direction like you've described in your post. You don't have to be sick anymore.
Avatar f tn Alcoholic neuropathy is just one of the problems related to Alcohol abuse, as Jacker suggested it is best to get a Doctors opinion.
Avatar f tn I am a recovering alcoholic x 4 yrs. What started out as an innocent use of cough medicine prescribed by physician, got additive mode started. I had started to use Nyquil to sleep and to make long story short, I have used a bottle (sometimes 2) daily for 3 years. 1 week off here and there when on vacation. Wanting to stop, not knowing what withdrawl will bring. Never had difficulty with alcohol, but off nyquil for 2 days, hot sweats, severe headache, irritation.
2176476 tn?1338605299 Your health care team need to know if you are taking alcohol with any prescribed meds. Alcohol is a depressant and will make getting stable really hard. It is so good you are recognizing the need for help. You may want to reconsider AA. My understanding is that each group has a very different dynamic and sometimes you have to 'shop around' to find a good fit. My best friend is a former alcoholic and that is what I heard from her.
Avatar f tn I am shocked that this doctor said it was ok to do that. Second fact is that he has a former abuse problem with alcohol which is even more reason he should not drink. I'm on a lot of meds and I enjoy a rum an coke now and then, but all in moderation.
Avatar n tn Almost lost a friend recently who was an alcoholic originally...alcohol free for 5 years when i met her...she is a nurse and hurt her back at work//low and behold she was handed a scip for narcotics a few years ago...and she went into severe addiction quick..i never knew her when she drank...but i sure knew her when she became a pill abuser...she overdosed on sumpin//not even sure if it was intentional or if she got carried away...she now has permanent brain damage....
Avatar n tn Two exceptions to this rule exist. Both cirrhosis and/or alcohol abuse are associated with higher AST levels than ALT levels, often in a ratio of approximately 2:1. From the data you supplied I would suggest that you should be very concerned.
Avatar f tn I am glad to say that there is a recently FDA approved medication for alcohol abuse called Vivitrol. It is an injectable form of naltrexone that blocks craving fir alcohol for a full month. It is covered by insurance and if you do not have one, the company will help you with about half the payment. So go to your doctor, or company website www.vivitrol.com and find a provider near you who can set this up for you. Good luck.
Avatar m tn What can anyone tell me about GGT as a marker for alcoholic cirrhosis? Among those who have posted lab results online their GGT seems to be consistently elevated, even during the first few months after cessation of alcohol intake. All that I've read to date seems to suggest that alcoholic liver disease, alcohol-induced cirrhosis in particular, is always accompanied by an elevation of GGT, even in cases where AST and ALT remain normal.
Avatar n tn hi. i'm assuming you are questioning if the test will give a positive result for alcohol. it depends how much alcohol or alcohol saturated substances were consumed. in my nonprofessional opinion, i'd say no as the threshold used in most drug screens is too high to register a positive without intentional consumption of alcoholic beverages. it also depends if the test criteria is based on a zero tolerance protocol (any consumption vs. intoxicating consumption).
Avatar f tn You have your diagnosis and is nothing more right now than a fatty liver but to continue alcohol abuse will guarantee you to move on to fibrosis. Your liver function is fine, AST/ALT are well with-in range. Your kidney function is also excellent. Nothing abnormal about the amount of liver cells dying off either. I am curious what the lab result were that prompted the ultra sound.
Avatar m tn I was involved in a violent relationship, and used alcohol to sort me out, but that didnt do my body good, i so i ended up with the Diphenhydramine, initially one or two a day but i got used to them quick, i really do fear that one day i will not come back from the trip. Im not making excuses as to what started me taking the pills, but i need off, as my mother is in the final stage of copd, and i have to be there for her, but as you can imagine its next to impossible when im off my rocker.
Avatar m tn Her doctor has added lithium to her meds. She is continuing to drink. I believe she is an alcoholic. How does the alcohol affect her lithium use?
Avatar f tn Hi there. Well, living with an alcoholic is terrible a lot of the time. There is a forum by that very title here at med help where you will find many in the same boat either now or in the past---- you may find this very helpful.
Avatar f tn Being a alcoholic for most still can have children but the risk of the child being a alcoholic is high aa says it runs in parents genes but having children is not impossible my wife and I have two one is doing something all the time and the other says on her computer so have fun without alcohol.
410281 tn?1254229064 ve never admitted anything, but my husband has noted my dependency since the headaches began. Am I an alcoholic, or am I simply trying to escape the pain of something else???? Some beast that takes over my body, whether it be sleep or neurological I don't know. No matter what, I want to be a pirate in my next life.....(only if Johnny Depp is still captain jack!!
Avatar m tn Is it concluded that there is to be no more alcohol of any kind forever? What about after you have cleared the virus?
Avatar m tn He has been diagnosed with fatty liver disease and possible stage A cirrhosis due to alcohol abuse. He had an ultrasound and all of his blood work has come back normal two different times. My concern is that he was put on a diuretic for the edema. He lost all of the fluid except for the abdomen. I had noticed his face and arms were getting very thin even when he was so swollen in his lower body and before the diuretic.
