Alcohol abuse vs dependency

Common Questions and Answers about Alcohol abuse vs dependency

alcohol

Avatar f tn Officially according to the DSM the only choices you have for the addict is Dependency and Abuse. Dependency is greatly if not totally inherited and Abuse is well, the best I can describe it is someone whom drugs/alcohol is causing a problem but they haven't had enough consequences to quit yet. (dependency rarely depends on consequences to quit, but more of a personally commitment) There are well defined symptoms of each.
Avatar n tn m having depression/anxiety issues after alcohol abuse) but maybe someone here might also know something about this. I know no one here knows this for sure, and maybe I'm looking in the wrong place on here but thought I would put it out there. I am just wondering if anyone here has ever asked their doctor or qualified professional if it is possible to run out of neurotransmitters whether it be naturally or from substance abuse. I'm a young male (24) and abused alcoholfor 5-6 years.
Avatar f tn I have been drinking about two six packs of beer each day for about 7 months. I have decided to try quitting once again. I have read how some people have seizures when they abruptly stop drinking. Does anyone know when you are out of the "danger zone" when you withdraw from alcohol abuse?
410281 tn?1254229064 ve never admitted anything, but my husband has noted my dependency since the headaches began. Am I an alcoholic, or am I simply trying to escape the pain of something else???? Some beast that takes over my body, whether it be sleep or neurological I don't know. No matter what, I want to be a pirate in my next life.....(only if Johnny Depp is still captain jack!!
Avatar f tn Hi Again Jewel, I see that you have two very similar post regarding your concern for your son, the other is entitled "Pain." It is where I posted my comment yesterday. None of us are experts as you have discovered if you are reading posts and comments in our community. That said it's obviously to me that your son should not be drinking while taking opiates. I see that as the bigger issue. As I said yesterday your son may very well have chronic pain.
Avatar f tn Is there any difference between addiction vs. physical dependence on drugs? If a person is physically dependent on alcohol, they are an alcoholic. If they are physically dependent on nicotine, they are addicted to tobacco. Makes sense that if they are physically dependent on pain pills that they are addicted.
1475202 tn?1536270977 First off I have cirrhosis so medication that metabolizes in the liver I must be very careful with. I have anxiety- hereditary and triggered from years of alcohol abuse. I recently relocated and went to my new doctor (general medicine) on Monday and she started me on Xanax extended release tablets instead of the pop them as you go type. I have never heard of them but she said it is the only type she will prescribe.
Avatar f tn Alcoholism and drug addiction are often referred to as “substance abuse” or “chemical dependency.” Alcoholics and nonalcoholics are, therefore, sometimes introduced to A.A. and encouraged to attend A.A. meetings. Anyone may attend open A.A. meetings. But only those with a drinking problem may attend closed meetings or become A.A. members. People with problems other than alcoholism are eligible for A.A. membership only if they have a drinking problem.
Avatar m tn anybody out there with add that has alcohol dependency problems like me?
Avatar f tn Becoming free from alcohol is a very doable thing. But remaining free from alcohol takes work. I had to take part in my own recovery and work on myself so I would change. If I don't change nothing changes. Nobody could do that for me. But there are millions of us in recovery all over the world. So freedom for you is out there waiting. Keep your willingness and continue to make the steps in the right direction like you've described in your post. You don't have to be sick anymore.
Avatar f tn My question is this I have a history of alcohol abuse, it started about 12 years ago when I had my child, I met a guy (who I spent 10 years with), could never get a babysitter so he started bringing beer into the house (only ever drank when I went out prior to this) after a year we were drinking a full bottle of scotch together every night,I had a very highly paid job god only knows how I kept it without being dicovered, after 10 years I left him tried to make a new start abroad it went wrong I
1563920 tn?1299288683 If you look at my past posts, I have been dealing with neurological issues for some time now. I have been very depressed about everything, from having to quit nursing to my inability to work and drive. During this time, I have been turning to alcohol to kind of deal with my problems, not such a good idea, I know!!! It hadn't seemed to be a problem until last night. A group of my friends, including my boyfriend, went out for my birthday.
Avatar f tn Abuse is generally reserved for physical abuse. What your husband is is bossy and nasty. Unpleasant, but not quite the same thing, in that you are not controlled by fear. So why do you put up with it? You can go to other people for help, but the best help comes from you. When he gets into one of his mean moods, ignore him, walk out of the room, go shopping. He would soon give up because your silence would deprive him of satisfaction. As it is, you are playing into his hands.
Avatar n tn as a rule narcs can be stopped much less dangerously than heavy alcohol abuse//physically// cos as a rule there is no risks unless a narc user is old and has heart failure//mentally both r a true bumber//and aftercare for alcohol abuse is almost imperative cos it is everywhere//and drug abuse is not socially acceptable like alcohol is..peeps do not pass out oxys at the bowling alley like they do beers u didnt state what ur abuse issue was/or if there was one at all???..
Avatar n tn the one thing that could be a factor is the predisposition to dependency on other drugs. generally, those individuals who have used pot, alcohol, etc. to combat anxiety based or depressive disorders, especially where there is evidence of dependency, should not be treated with things like benzodiazepines or barbituate sedatives which have a high abuse potential.
Avatar n tn Such good advice. I think you really do have a problem with the alcohol and please check out the "alcohol abuse" forum for some good help there too.

Avatar f tn m 83 years old, female, andhave for the largest part of my life lived with addiction to alcohol and tobacco, but am now off of both with family intervention. Two months ago I had hip replacement surgery with oxycodone prescribed for pain after surgery, and now I can't sleep and have severe muscle spasms if I don't have oxycodone around the clock. I'm going for surgical followup in a few days but need to know how to get off this drug without going crazy.
Avatar n tn if your daughter wants to go to treatment and can't afford it, get ahold of your local CHEMICAL DEPENDENCY CENTER. most if not all county's have one. from there she can be assessed, see a councilor, and possibly get into your state in-patient chemical dependency center. i went to my state's in-patient treatment center and it was really great, very structured and it was free.
Avatar m tn http://www.medhelp.org/user_journals/show/138942/Addiction-VS-Dependency?personal_page_id=14686 All of the medical conditions that you mention are probably not related to your opiate use unless the opiate irritated your stomach lining. There has been some investigation into the impact of long-term therapy with opioids on male endocrine function. This is from one article I found on the web: "Dr.
Avatar n tn confront them explain alcohol and drug are the same thing if he abused alcohol and he is willing to get them by "any means necessary" that sure sounds like there is a problem .
1621722 tn?1333050499 Welcome to the forum. None of us are qualified to give you any sort of diagnosis, especially online. If you're using alcohol as a way to deal with anxiety and depression, you could be heading down a slippery slope. It already sounds as though you need to figure out exactly how bad your "problem" with alcohol is...and the sooner the better, before it gets any worse.
Avatar f tn Hi There As hector has said the score is indicative of F3 or F4 depending on the cause, it may alcohol alone or you may have metabolic syndrome which has been exacerbated by the alcohol. F3 and F4 is usually permanent damage and will likely be progressive. Some people do however stop progression and live a long life. here is a scoring card; http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/de/FibroScan_Scoring_Card_for_Liver_Stiffness_Diagnosis.
