Avatar n tn And on the other side of the coin, our body and brain will change over time, as we continue to abuse alcohol. Once we do this for a long enough period of time, the changes are permanent. And as Narla says, we can't drink again or limit ourselves.
Avatar f tn learned that I could medicate with alcohol (not a consciously learned thing) and then my alcoholism was triggered. SO - I would medicate during mania but because I have the disease of alcoholism as well, I couldn't STOP drinking. I do not have an addictive personality. I did not become addicted to pot, X, acid, etc nor did I become addicted to gambling, sex, etc.
Avatar f tn My son who was 21 years old and suffered alcoholism and alcohol abuse completed sucide while in an alcohol induced blackout. I know if he had not been drinking it would have never happened. How common is this. How can alcohol change someone to the violent rage that my son suffered at the time he took his life? He had been in counceling since the age of 14.
Avatar f tn My question is this I have a history of alcohol abuse, it started about 12 years ago when I had my child, I met a guy (who I spent 10 years with), could never get a babysitter so he started bringing beer into the house (only ever drank when I went out prior to this) after a year we were drinking a full bottle of scotch together every night,I had a very highly paid job god only knows how I kept it without being dicovered, after 10 years I left him tried to make a new start abroad it went wrong I
Avatar f tn hi. as you know both are bad for you. for me, it was an easy choice. the smokes might kill me eventually, but my drinking would have if i had continued the way i was going. if your drinking has reached the point where it is causing you problems, i would recommend taking care of that first as it lowers our inhibitions in respect to other avenues of self destruction. i couldn't comprehend much more than staying sober at the beginning and sometimes that was overwhelming.
1032715 tn?1315984234 Clearly there is a genetic basis to this and there should be further means to understand and prevent alcoholism and substance abuse in general. There is ongoing research as regards preventative vaccines for specific forms of substance abuse but as with all research it will take a while for safe and effective treatments to be available as it is in its early stages: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/01/04/AR2010010402752.
Avatar f tn Go to any meeting you feel most comfortable. Just be respectful of the meeting you're in. In other words, if you're in an AA meeting..don't talk all about drugs. NA considers alcohol a drug (which it is), but most AA meetings center their sharing on the sruggle with alcohol. So, just respect who's house you're in. I've been drunk maybe 5 times in my life, but I attend 2-3 AA meetings a week. I also have 1-2 NA meetings a week planned. The steps are the steps..
Avatar m tn i don't know.. but i've heard there's an alcoholism Forum Board that is really helpful, here..
1310633 tn?1430224091 He said the incident came only a week or two after campus officials met with UT fraternity and sorority student leaders about alcohol. The university, which generally forbids alcohol on campus, has anti-alcohol-abuse efforts, including unannounced checks of common areas in residence halls.
1255505 tn?1272819115 How many people here have a history of substance abuse? Did it result from or result in any episodes? I abused cannabis off and on from 13 to 20. I abused LSD from 16 to 20. I abused alcohol off and on from 21 to 37. I abused morphine & oxycodone at 40. Yikes! I also tried a few other things, but they never really took hold.
Avatar m tn GGT (Gamma Glutamyl Transferase) can be used to screen for chronic alcohol abuse (it will be elevated in about 75% of chronic drinkers). Sometimes it may be used to monitor for alcohol use and/or abuse in people who are receiving treatment for alcoholism or alcoholic hepatitis." Lab Tests Online http://labtestsonline.
Avatar n tn When together, we typically drink alcohol. Sometimes he can drink quite a bit 6-8 drinks and be fine, but sometimes, he gets really drunk on half a drink, with blurred vision and dizziness. Mentally he is aware and frustrated by what is happening, but physically he becomes a drunken wreck. We have tried to trace this to what he has eaten or what he is drinking, but to no avail. Has anyone heard of this before?
Avatar n tn To the extent that alcohol can reduce mucus clearing from the airways and reduce the gag reflex, it is theoretically possible that alcohol intoxication could result in an increase in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) exacerbations, independent of cigarette smoking, closely linked to alcohol abuse. Or that alcohol has been shown to reduce anti-oxidants within the lung and thus may increase the susceptibility to injury.
Avatar n tn So for a long while now I have suspected that I have an alcohol problem, but I would not describe myself as a textbook alcoholic. Once a week, I get a very strong desire to drink. I start to feel elated and very excited about going out to drink and have a good time. Once drunk, I am a totally different person. I say and do things that I would never say and do in a normal mood. My husband has commented that I am like two different people and that this change occurs after only 1 or 2 drinks.
Avatar f tn have finally concluded that the alcohol (drank every night for about 7 years) may be causing the dizziness as i had a REALLY heavy drinking session at the weekend and could barely stand... i have cut down (3 days now) but it seems to remain - can alcohol cause lbyrithitis and can anyone else relate??? i really hope they can, things actually rotate for a few moments and i geel ever so sick at the time...
Avatar f tn Welcome to the Anxiety Forum! Sorry you're going through this. We'll try to help you. Quick question...why did your doctor recommend stopping the Klonopin? Because of your alcoholism history? Was there any abuse of this med, were you taking more than Rx'd, for example? What did she say? Was she the same doc that put you on the Klonopin from the beginning? If you took the med as prescribed and it (obviously) worked for you...then my advice to you is FIND ANOTHER DOCTOR.
Avatar n tn Although I also suffer from Bio-chemical related depression, mine is not caused by alcohol abuse. It is much more common among individuals that have suffered long term alcoholism. http://www.trans4mind.com/nutrition/depression.
Avatar f tn Does this mean that dementia is developed due to alcohol abuse? If, so how chronic use of alcohol affect one's cognitive ability and/or impair SNS??? What is the mechanism of this particular type of dementia?? Could anyone please help with my question?
Avatar m tn hi there. you have described a common trait of alcoholism. one doesn't have to drink every day or always to excess to have a problem. my father rarely drank during my childhood and teenage years, but when i was around 27, he began to make up for lost time, unable to quit. i spent my 30th birthday in the icu and 3 days later watched him die as a direct result of alcoholism. you are playing with fire my friend.
362971 tn?1201987034 207 Clearly, for heavy alcohol users, efforts should be undertaken to treat the alcohol abuse and dependence before starting treatment, but treatment is not contraindicated for persons who have an occasional drink of alcohol or who have a history of alcoholism. Although no consensus opinion exists, it seems reasonable to recommend either the complete suspension of alcohol intake while on treatment or to restrict the use of alcohol to an occasional drink during the course of the treatment.
Avatar m tn It was in a whiskey glass. Well they didn't just check for "alcoholism" but it seems that most of the basic tests revolved around what may have been caused by alcohol, no extra CTs were done and she was just diagnosed with alcoholism. So I'm not sure if the jumpiness was from that as well as the chest pain and fast heartbeat.
Avatar f tn Becoming free from alcohol is a very doable thing. But remaining free from alcohol takes work. I had to take part in my own recovery and work on myself so I would change. If I don't change nothing changes. Nobody could do that for me. But there are millions of us in recovery all over the world. So freedom for you is out there waiting. Keep your willingness and continue to make the steps in the right direction like you've described in your post. You don't have to be sick anymore.
Avatar m tn I agree that u shouldn't walk away I was in that situation n ppl left me I almost killed myself drinking so much I needed them n they wasn't there n it was ****** up since then I'm now 45 days sober
Avatar n tn In the last 2 years he has totalled the family van, lost two jobs and has had his state license suspended for alcohol abuse. he is still not dry and has been in therapy for 6 plus months. this has all happened since they crossed the 20 year mark of marriage. Not to mention what it is doing to their very aware teenagers. You must follow your gut instinct on this one. Who knows maybe he will admit it and then nobody can ignore it.
