Avatar f tn The problem with really intelligent kids is that they problem solve so fast. And the problem with 4 year olds is that they don't have alot of self control. Put it together and ya - you've got problems. Throw the possibility of ADHD into the mix and everything gets a lot worse. I really don't know if he has ADHD. How long ago did the doctors see him and what kind of a doctor saw him?
Avatar n tn Dear Renee, Generally, pediatric mental health clinicians prefer to wait until the age of seven or so to diagnose ADHD, because so many of the symptoms (inattention, hyperactivity, impulsivity) of ADHD are typical of the behavior of yopung (particularly pre-school) children. Having said this, it does happen that ADHD is diagnosed in pre-school children, and medication is sometimes prescribed in these circumstances.
Avatar f tn But when inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsive behavior are the norm for a child, it may be a sign of ADHD. ADHD can lead to problems at home and at school, with family, teachers, and peers, so it’s important to identify the symptoms and get help.
Avatar f tn For now, medications should control the symptoms and psychosocial support can tame the manifestations of adhd as well. Regards and God bless...
Avatar m tn After dealing with his behaviors I feel like their may be something else going on, but am having a difficult time pin pointing it. He definitely has all of the ADHD symptoms, but some added on top. He seems totally unaware of anything going on around him and really doesn't react to discipline unless something important to him is taken away. He even smirks when being scolded. Not in an "I don't care" attitude, more like he doesn't get it.
Avatar f tn My husbands father does suffer from mental illness and jokes that my 8 y/o gets it from him. He has many ADHD symptoms. Pedicatrician mentioned Aspergers. The Dr. doesn't even know about his sisters diagnosis. He tried him on Ritalin LA. He had a big improvement in the first month. Second month not as much of an improvement. Dr. questioned it being a a 'bad batch' of pills, but it is too expensive toget a bad batch so then we tried genericritalin and his heart beat out of his chest.
Avatar n tn i have a 4yr old she was diagnosed with adhd and she has been taking adderol for almost a yr now and it hasnot work sence the begining. now her doctor want to go from 1/2 pill in am and 1/2 pill in pm to 1 whole pill in am and 2 pills in pm. i refuse because she sees things that arent there when she was taking 1whole ill before. now im scared to give her more because we had so much trouble in the begining. and i dont know wht to do.
Avatar n tn I had a friend who recently tried an elimination diet and slowly added foods back that she eats regularly, she found out that she was allergic to wheat, rhy, some flour products, sweeteners, etc. that were causing the ADHD symptoms... She has since started eating whole foods and good fats and her symptoms have vastly improved... It could be something as little as the dyes in foods, or sweeteners, etc...
Avatar f tn Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, ADHD, is one of the most common mental disorders that develop in children. Children with ADHD have impaired functioning in multiple settings, including home, school, and in relationships with peers. If untreated, the disorder can have long-term adverse effects into adolescence and adulthood. Asperger's Disorder is a milder variant of Autistic Disorder.
Avatar f tn Hi. My son is 10 years old with severe adhd. He has been on meds since he was 5. Recently we have had to change his meds for the first time in 5 yrs.(nightmare) I hadn't really thought about it til now but am really interested in some natural remedies for this. Even some over the counter meds would be fine. Does anyone have something they do for their child that works well?
Avatar n tn This is not to say that, if she is diagnosed with ADHD, it explains all of her behavior, but may be a component of it. I would revisit the ADHD issue, and have her evaluated again, including collecting data via standardized checklists that are widely accepted as helping to establish this descriptive diagnosis. As an aside, it's not unusual for children who display ADHD to also have the ability to be attentive and focused in particular circumstances.
Avatar f tn How frustrating for you to have to find that out after the fact. In support of ADHD, however, these medications for children with ADHD without seizure disorders are a Godsend if diet changes and behavior modifications do not help. The right medication has to be found for each individual child just like other disorders. ADHD is neural disorder just as seizure disorders. Both affect the brain but in different ways.
Avatar m tn Studies have shown that approximately 15 percent of the children on ADHD drugs will threaten, attempt, or actually commit suicide by the age of 18.
5856747 tn?1403352282 It was once thought to be three times commoner in boys than in girls though not all studies support that figure. About 50% of ADHD children will carry the condition into adulthood. For the rest their behaviour will modify as they grow into adulthood. Controversy: In the recent past and even today ADHA struggles to be accepted as a “disorder” as distinct form behaviour or “boldness”.
Avatar n tn The on-line surveys can be useful tools to see if a person might display symptoms typical of ADHD, but a thorough assessment will consider a child's medical history, family history, current functioning at home and in school, possible alternative explanations for the symptoms identified on the surveys, etc.
Avatar f tn i would like anybody who has a 9 year old son or daughter to tell me what are the symptoms of ADHD before i take my nephew to a pdoc...........
Avatar n tn Hyperactivity as a product of ADHD, if it is extreme, is difficult to address with young children in non-pharmacological ways. Reducing environmental stimuli (particularly noise and movement) can help. Teaching relaxation skills (such as deep breathing and progressive muscle relaxation) is sometimes helpful, but young children often have difficulty employing such tactics.
327385 tn?1378364331 Sounds like your talking about my daughter, and she has ADHD. They started her off on Adderal XR, but she is now on Vyvance (sp). She did and does all the things you have listed, including the stealing and not knowing why. Your best bet is to try and find a peds doctor that specializes in ADD/ADHD. If she is found to have ADHD, so of the things she does might not go away, like the stealing.
Avatar f tn While ADHD can certainly be diagnosed before the age of seven, extreme caution must be undertaken because development has not yet had the 'opportunity' to run its course and many children who appear to display ADHD at the age of five look very different by the age of seven. Re: ODD, that is almost never diagnosed at the age of five and, in any case, there is no single medication approach to its treatment.
Avatar f tn I would definitely look at the SIDS site because you do treat that differently from ADHD. and he could have both. What is distressing to me is that he could have ADHD and the only help the doctors gave you is to prescribe meds? I should add that if they are necessary - I have nothing against meds. Millions of kids are on them. But I would hope that parents and schools have tried other things first. So what to do?
Avatar f tn Heart-related problems — ADD / ADHD stimulant medications have been found to cause sudden death in children and adults with heart conditions. The American Heart Association recommends that all individuals, including children, have a cardiac evaluation prior to starting a stimulant. An electrocardiogram is recommended if the person has a history of heart problems.
1453183 tn?1287852619 How do we know that the medication won't make both normal children and children with ADD / ADHD depressed? We don't. The study is evidence that more testing needs to be done on how these drugs impact the brain long term for both ADD / ADHD individuals and individuals without the disorder.
Avatar n tn ADHD tends to run in families and most adults don't realize they have it until they have a child that is diagnosed with it. About 60% of children with ADHD continue to have symptoms after the age of 18....There is a lot of debate about the disorder being possibly underdiagnosed in adults, especially in women. The numbers are around 4-6% of adults are thought to have ADHD and only 1-3% are diagnosed...
707438 tn?1240963240 Thats dumb to say children only have ADD/ADHD. I'm 21, and I'm still ADD. when i was a kid i did have ADHD. i was real disruptive in classes, and would constantly get notes sent hope from school. The hyper-ness went away once i became aware of what i was doing and was able to mature from it... not i'm the quietest person you'll ever meet. I still have trouble in college. ESPECIALLY with reading.
Avatar n tn For a useful, workable, practical and effective manual for behavior management (for average children as well as for children who display ODD or other conditions), take a look at Lynn Clark's S.O.S.: Help for Parents - it's a wondeful resource.
Avatar n tn I was diagnosed with ADHD as a child at the age of 7, and took meds until I lost my health insurance during college. I still feel symptoms of it, and academically struggle much more now than I did when medicated.
