Avatar f tn The problem with really intelligent kids is that they problem solve so fast. And the problem with 4 year olds is that they don't have alot of self control. Put it together and ya - you've got problems. Throw the possibility of ADHD into the mix and everything gets a lot worse. I really don't know if he has ADHD. How long ago did the doctors see him and what kind of a doctor saw him?
Avatar n tn Having said this, it does happen that ADHD is diagnosed in pre-school children, and medication is sometimes prescribed in these circumstances. However, there is considerable debate about the appropriateness of such diagnoses, leading some to conclude that ADHD is over-diagnosed and medication over-prescribed in this young population.
Avatar f tn They typically dont start even thinking about it until age 5 or 6. Both my girls starte showing signs and symptoms in Kidergarten but I would not let a diagnosis begin until first grade.
Avatar n tn now her doctor want to go from 1/2 pill in am and 1/2 pill in pm to 1 whole pill in am and 2 pills in pm. i refuse because she sees things that arent there when she was taking 1whole ill before. now im scared to give her more because we had so much trouble in the begining. and i dont know wht to do. i am trying to find a doctor (a good doctor) that treamts the ADHD and not just give the medicine that slows the child down. any suggestions would be appreciated. thanks in advanced.
Avatar f tn For now, medications should control the symptoms and psychosocial support can tame the manifestations of adhd as well. Regards and God bless...
Avatar m tn After dealing with his behaviors I feel like their may be something else going on, but am having a difficult time pin pointing it. He definitely has all of the ADHD symptoms, but some added on top. He seems totally unaware of anything going on around him and really doesn't react to discipline unless something important to him is taken away. He even smirks when being scolded. Not in an "I don't care" attitude, more like he doesn't get it.
Avatar f tn Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, ADHD, is one of the most common mental disorders that develop in children. Children with ADHD have impaired functioning in multiple settings, including home, school, and in relationships with peers. If untreated, the disorder can have long-term adverse effects into adolescence and adulthood. Asperger's Disorder is a milder variant of Autistic Disorder.
Avatar n tn I took her to another doctor shortly after, who specialized in ADHD, who said that she definately had the behavior, but she was too young to diagnose. I left there at least feeling better about my parenting abilities. I was told to wait until she was in school. I happily awaited her Kindergarten, only to find out she was fine at school.
Avatar f tn My husbands father does suffer from mental illness and jokes that my 8 y/o gets it from him. He has many ADHD symptoms. Pedicatrician mentioned Aspergers. The Dr. doesn't even know about his sisters diagnosis. He tried him on Ritalin LA. He had a big improvement in the first month. Second month not as much of an improvement. Dr. questioned it being a a 'bad batch' of pills, but it is too expensive toget a bad batch so then we tried genericritalin and his heart beat out of his chest.
Avatar f tn How frustrating for you to have to find that out after the fact. In support of ADHD, however, these medications for children with ADHD without seizure disorders are a Godsend if diet changes and behavior modifications do not help. The right medication has to be found for each individual child just like other disorders. ADHD is neural disorder just as seizure disorders. Both affect the brain but in different ways.
Avatar n tn Hyperactivity as a product of ADHD, if it is extreme, is difficult to address with young children in non-pharmacological ways. Reducing environmental stimuli (particularly noise and movement) can help. Teaching relaxation skills (such as deep breathing and progressive muscle relaxation) is sometimes helpful, but young children often have difficulty employing such tactics.
Avatar f tn Hi. My son is 10 years old with severe adhd. He has been on meds since he was 5. Recently we have had to change his meds for the first time in 5 yrs.(nightmare) I hadn't really thought about it til now but am really interested in some natural remedies for this. Even some over the counter meds would be fine. Does anyone have something they do for their child that works well?
Avatar n tn I had a friend who recently tried an elimination diet and slowly added foods back that she eats regularly, she found out that she was allergic to wheat, rhy, some flour products, sweeteners, etc. that were causing the ADHD symptoms... She has since started eating whole foods and good fats and her symptoms have vastly improved... It could be something as little as the dyes in foods, or sweeteners, etc...
Avatar m tn Studies have shown that approximately 15 percent of the children on ADHD drugs will threaten, attempt, or actually commit suicide by the age of 18.
5856747 tn?1403352282 It was once thought to be three times commoner in boys than in girls though not all studies support that figure. About 50% of ADHD children will carry the condition into adulthood. For the rest their behaviour will modify as they grow into adulthood. Controversy: In the recent past and even today ADHA struggles to be accepted as a “disorder” as distinct form behaviour or “boldness”.
Avatar n tn The on-line surveys can be useful tools to see if a person might display symptoms typical of ADHD, but a thorough assessment will consider a child's medical history, family history, current functioning at home and in school, possible alternative explanations for the symptoms identified on the surveys, etc.
Avatar f tn All of the things that you have listed - I have seen in ADHD kids. What you need to do is to start to research what ADHD is and how to deal with the consequences of it. Understanding ADHD really makes a big difference in how you deal with the child. I mentioned the following books in a post below. Its worth your time to check them out. - "ADHD and Me, What I learned from lighting fires at the dinner table," by Blake Taylor.
327385 tn?1378364331 Your best bet is to try and find a peds doctor that specializes in ADD/ADHD. If she is found to have ADHD, so of the things she does might not go away, like the stealing. For me the last straw was when my daughter vandalized the neighbors boat, he wouldn't call the cops, so I did....she has stolen or vandalized a thing since. The only way I can describe my child with ADHD is like Pinocchio without the Jimmy Cricket (the little cricket telling him not to do bad things).
Avatar f tn 1. Destructiveness may be seen in both disorders but differs in origin. Children who are ADHD often break things carelessly while playing (“non-angry destructiveness”), whereas the major destructiveness of children who are bipolar is not a result of carelessness but tends to occur in anger. Children who are bipolar may exhibit severe temper tantrums during which they release manic quantities of physical and emotional energy, sometimes with violence and physical property destruction. 2.
Avatar f tn First, I havent heard of explosive behavior disorder. (in children) In adults, this type of thing would show up as an Axis II personality disorder. In children, particularly 4 (very young for this kind of diagnosis, ADD/ADHD as well - and I would hold off on the meds until a second or third opinion is obtained..cheaper than treatment I'm sure...) ALSO - (I have personal experience in this - my 5 yr old girl had wild tantrums, and I was very worried,, and took her to different drs...
Avatar f tn htm And I have several more that get even more comprehensive. In conclusion, ya he certainly does exhibit ADHD symptoms (and that is a lot easier to correct then autism). Do check out the tip toes. Definitely check out the SIDS - doctors are not real up on this so look at the web site and see what you think.
Avatar n tn ADHD tends to run in families and most adults don't realize they have it until they have a child that is diagnosed with it. About 60% of children with ADHD continue to have symptoms after the age of 18....There is a lot of debate about the disorder being possibly underdiagnosed in adults, especially in women. The numbers are around 4-6% of adults are thought to have ADHD and only 1-3% are diagnosed...
1453183 tn?1287852619 and the more information that you can give a person to help themselves or their children deal with ADHD is great! In regards to some of the studies you mentioned. I will do that in the next post.
Avatar n tn I have only recently learned of the ODD. My daughter has been diagnosed with "mild" ADHD. Her pychologist also told us that she is extremely bright. She is doing well academically in kindergarten; her teacher said she is above average in most areas of learning. Our problem is her behavior. She not only falls into four symptoms of ODD, but exhibits all six of the criteria.
Avatar f tn Heart-related problems — ADD / ADHD stimulant medications have been found to cause sudden death in children and adults with heart conditions. The American Heart Association recommends that all individuals, including children, have a cardiac evaluation prior to starting a stimulant. An electrocardiogram is recommended if the person has a history of heart problems.
