I know a little girl who had it and although I don't know what treatments she received (I'm as close as family but try not to pry) I believe she at least had a topical cream. their provider needs to better educate himself on acyclovir. we start children on oral acyclovir suppressively from month of age upward as needed. no need for any labs or anything either from it. the arginine/lysine theory never panned out outside of the lab actually. They are even using arginine to treat herpes in research now. m not sure if Zofran is used in children but you could ask. Tetrabenzene is used but that has some serious side effects so that might not be for children either. But there are other medications as well. Clonidine in patch form (Catapres) is especially helpful for tic like motions (tardive tourreticism which is a variant of tardive dyskinesia I have as well). I am on Tenex which is helpful as well. I believe both of those are used in children.

I have always take acyclovir when I have a cold sore, and never had too much of an issue with side effects until my last prescription. They upped my dose from 200 mg to 800 mg (different doctor), and I had all kinds of problems and only ended up taking them for 2 days. After the 2nd day on the 800 mg, my eyes became very irritated and my lips developed a rash and broke out in fordyce spots. Not sure if it is all a coincidence, but still have the same lip and eye problems 30 days later.
