I am 3 years post breast cancer i had lumpectomy chemo rads i have taken tamoxofen for 2,5 years now on aromasil i had a bone density scan and was told i had low calcuim levels, now on calcuim sandox and actonel asked if i had osetoprosis and was told no have read around actonel and have not taken it yet as of the side effects please can you advice thanks.
This week I was given the bad news that I had Esophageal Cancer, squamous cell carcinoma. I am 54 year old male that was a pack a day smoker for almost 40 years. It started a couple of months ago. I couldn't swallow anything, I would try and dislodge food that was stuck down my throat with water. But this would work and sometimes not. It's more of a discomfort than pain. I got myself to the emergency at the Civic Hospital in Ottawa.
I take once monthly Actonel. While I was pushing the pill through the foil blister, it broke. I did not take that pill for fear that it could cause stomach problems. My question is would it have been safe to take? Also, if I contact Proctor & Gamble, do you think they might replace the pill. If it was a daily pill, I wouldn't worry about, but I just lost a whole month of medicine due to a faulty package design.

Treatment of stage 4 esophageal cancer usually includes chemotherapy, radiation therapy and surgical removal of the affected part of the esophagus. Unfortunately, once it has spread, especially to places like the liver, long-term survival is difficult. Cytotoxic chemotherapy is the most effective treatment modality for patients with metastatic disease.

My mom has been diagnosed with stage 3 esophageal cancer. The cancer has spread to the lymph nodes but not to other organs. She is 91 years old. My question is twofold. They recomend radiation therapy. Will this help to improve her quality of life and perhaps extend her life, and I would like to know realistically what her life expectancy is with this diagnosis.

i currnetly am taking actonel for my bones the past 3 years and klonopin i per night and take alot of vitamins such as B compex etc. no alcohol consumption but i do smoke half a pack of cigarettes per day no other medical conditions known 6 months ago all my blood workups were normal . ANY IDEAS WHAT CAN BE GOING ON WITH ME ?
It seems that when I look up symptoms for esophageal cancer, hiatal hernia, and GERD, that they all have the same symptoms with the exception of bleeding (which is late in the cancer stages). Knowing that I have a hiatal hernia and GERD, how might I get a clue from symptoms if I were developing esophageal cancer without getting a regular endoscope?
D Doctor presented to my father the diagnosis of esophageal cancer. My father was admitted and was seen by gen Surgeon in the a.m. Gen Surgeon the did a Endoscopy with biopsy of 2 diff areas of the mass both of which were neg for cancer. Peg tube was placed for later chemo indwelling cath was placed and cone chest tube was placed for drainage of fluid due to according to surgeon of the tumor causing irritation of the pleural sac.
I have been living with GERD since birth for sixteen years, i have been in and out of the hospital and had more tests done to me then you can imagine. Most of my summers have been in Driscol's Children Hospital in Corpus Christi Tx. I am on a strict diet, not eating anything spicy or late at night. I don't eat anything with dairy since i'm lactose intolerant, i am allergic to almost everything edible and my dad is diabetic so my mothet and i eat practically his diet.
Personally I think he should have a gastroscopy to make sure that he doesn't have an Esophageal problem and they will also check the different sphincters to see if they are working properly. It wouldn't hurt to have an allergy check but if he hasn't had a gastro and he is over 50 then I would have it checked as well as have a colonoscopy.
The phlegm could be from the banana so stop getting bananas for awhile and see if that helps.

I am just tired of taking medicenes that seem to cause other problems. I think I have the GERD from taking Actonel even though I followed the instructions to the letter for taking the Actonel. No longer take it. Just take calcium.
Hi :) Calm down we all here understand what you are gointh through.I am having this ''doom'' feeling.As someone here sais...fear is not a fact.Because you fear of cancer it doesen't mean that you do have cancer. If you search the internet cancer has a billion of starting symptoms...inculing...headaches.You dont fear of cancer everytime you have a headache.The most possible is that you dont have anything serious.Its a good thing you are looking up for it.
Maybe I'm in the wrong forum to be asking his, but for the past 3 weeks or so, I've had this annoying tickle / irritation in my throat to the point of where it feels like I might have to cough, but I don't actually have to cough. I'm 30 years old, no history of asthma or allergies (other than dust / mold) and was a very light smoker for a few years. I have had post nasal drip for a long time and I know what that felt like.
Thank you for your response. We have found out that my husband has Barret's disease and Stage 111 esophageal cancer. We see the oncologist next week and he is facing chemo, radiation, and surgery.

Barrett's knows no age boundaries. If your daughter was a bulimic then the damage done from constant regurgitation could definitely cause the kind of damage required for the onset of Barrett's. In fact, there have even been some cases of esophageal cancer in <30yr olds, all associated bulimia. (Very, very, very few; I've only ever seen 2 documented cases.) The polyps on her vocal chords are very likely also due to the bulimia.
