Abscess drainage healing

Common Questions and Answers about Abscess drainage healing

abscess

Avatar f tn I had an abscess in my right breast 10 years ago and it left a little lump after it healed. Two weeks ago I developed an abscess in the same spot. My GP recommended a week of antibiotics (Augmentin) and it started to drain on its own two days back. I feel a thickened area which hasn't gone down. Should I be worried? The abscess continues to drain slowly and I have covered it with sterilized gauze. Please help.
Avatar m tn Presently, the various methods used are incision and drainage, excision and healing by secondary intention, excision and primary closure and excision with reconstructive flap techniques. Please discuss these options with your doctor. Hygiene, proper dressings after surgery and depilation is the only ways to prevent recurrent pilonidal sinus. It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations and the answer is based on the medical information provided.
Avatar f tn I would have the doc look at it in case there is infection inside. If the strength of the site is compromised a wound can be pulled apart even much later. I once had an abdominal incision abscess and it nearly turned into gangrene. I'd call the doc at least, and if the drainage is not clear but like pus and/or has a bad odor, I would treat it with urgency.
Avatar m tn I am really sorry if I can't be of much help, but I would advise you to ask your surgeon all the questions you have asked here, and I am sure that you'll be much better informed regarding drainage, healing, and especially when you can go back to work since your job is physically demanding. Wishing you all the best and prompt recovery.
Avatar f tn I agree, don't be terrified. It actually feels better once it gets out. I had one abscess I could feel it rupturing while I was at work, and I'm a cashier at a grocery store, so I couldn't run anywhere and hide. That one hurt but now, the pain is minimal when they open. I've been waiting for a couple weeks for one of my abscesses to open so it can drain out and heal up. I think of it as a good thing, wanting whatever is in my breast that needs to come out, please get it out.
Avatar n tn I have yet to see any improvement from taking the antibiotics, so I went to the ER yesterday where they attempted to do and Incision and Drainage procedure. Some of the abscess was soft, but a large part of it in the middle was still hard... ??? With making an incision, the doctor was able to squeeze a good portion of the abscess out... but there is still a fairly large sized lump there. There has been no drainage coming from the incision since she did this.
Avatar n tn I returned to the ER the following day and had the packing removed for the final time and then was told to have a follow up visit with either my primary care doctor or dermotologist to make sure it's healing properly. I believe that this abscess was cause by a pair of underwear that was too tight, cutting off the circulation to a gland that lies right outside the crease of the thigh.
Avatar n tn The healing process depends on how long it takes for all the rubbish to come out and how deep the abscess is. If the root of the abscess is left, it will continue to fester. Make sure that you take the antibiotics as prescribed and do as the doctor advised you. Take pain relief medication as prescribed on the packet to help lessen the pain.
1657910 tn?1302375661 I just had an abscess open and it is draining red blood primarily. Is this normal? Should I put a call into my breast surgeon to be on the safe side? My regular abscesses are the regular pus with blood mixed in at times, but never just blood. Can anyone help?
Avatar f tn Having no idea what was wrong I went to the doctors and was put on amoxcillin (they weren't sure what was wrong as the abscess isn't visible, it is really high up under my lip and quite large). Some of my swelling has gone down since and the pain has completely stopped, although obviously the abscess still causes discomfort because of the pressure, does this mean my front tooth has died? It has changed in colour, it's now slightly greyish.
Avatar n tn In the acute form antibiotics are administered and eventually incision and drainage of the abscess are performed. In the chronical form excision of the diseased milksinus and fibrotic tissue with the nipple is mandatory. We do not hesitate to excise the majority of the milksinuses.
1548207 tn?1303457780 I am so distraught and discouraged how did u deal with this? What should I expect ? Any tips for care and healing would be great.
Avatar f tn I had an abscess removed a few years ago through surgery/drainage. It has left 2 slight scars that seem to keep getting irritated by my underwear/clothes rubbing against them, and one of them gets irritated during sex (which worried my boyfriend). When they get irritated they bleed a little bit but there's no pain and it heals again, but my question is, what can I do to prevent the scars from getting irritated by my underwear/sex?
Avatar n tn Over a month ago, an abscess formed on the back of my thigh (midway between bottom of buttock and top of knee). I was on vacation and delayed medical care. Finally it became huge and I went to ER where it was lanced and packed and I was given Bactrim and Cipro for 5 days. I used compresses on it. The culture came back (days later) as strep. After another 10 days, it reddened again and seemed a bit bumpy. I was put on 10 days of Clindmycin. Just completed that course.
Avatar n tn If theres a fistula (lil gum boil), sometimes warm salt water will help pull the pus out of the abscess. Otherwise, your dentist can perform an incision and drainage but I wouldn't recommend that route at all. The root canal was done and everything should be fine now. Good luck with hygiene school! Maybe I'll see you at some ADA functions. Best wishes.
592047 tn?1243389587 Swelling causes pain in abscesses so keeping the pain down to a minimum will help. The healing abscess should be much less painful after 5 days or so. Just keep pampering her, giving her the antibiotics, and soaking the paw. Once the kittens are weaned (if they are normal, hopefully) please have your cat spayed/desexed!
Avatar m tn I undergo abscess drainage surgery for anorectal abscess last october, it healed quickly but recurring bleeding and irritation is always present.
Avatar m tn So about 3 weeks ago I had my perianal abscess drained and the healing process went quite well until about 1 week after the drainage small spots started to appear around my anus and near where the abscess was. My doctor prescribed me with a 1 week course of antibiotics which seemed to clear them up. However, more spots have started to appear but more itchy and painful and also when they burst the pain seems to ease. So are these spots anything to worry about?
Avatar f tn I had my first surgery for drainage on Jan. 8th, then another abscess formed 1 week later, a 3rd abscess drained another week later and at the same time I got Erythema Nodosum on my 2 legs. I was put on prednisone, which took away the pain from my legs and reduced alot (not all) of tge inflammation in my breast. I've been on a series of antibiotics (Clindamycin, Bactrim, Rifampin, Doxcycyline, and CIPRO). After my 3 incisions closed and healed and I thought I was all better.
Avatar n tn and may include surgical drainage of abscess, immobilization of the spine region by splintage, intramedullary hip screw/ rod to promote bone healing, hemiarthroplasty or spinal fusion etc. Management is case specific and you may like to discuss the possible options in detail with your orthopedician. Hope this helps. Take care!
Avatar n tn Hi, Have you had a follow up with your surgeon already? An abscess was drained from the scrotum and open drainage was done to decompress the area. Closing tthe incision site may prevent total drainage of the abscess and may also cause the abscess to recur and result to compression of nearby structures. I suggest you discuss this with your surgeon. I do not think they will be stitching this together. Wound healing may take a while. Do you still take your antibiotics?
Avatar n tn Hello, This persistent abscess that does not get cleared with antibiotics is called Parulis as this elevated nodule is actually an opening of fistulous tract from some chronic abscess either in association with tooth (periapical abscess) or gum abscess or could be sinus in your case. As I can not do physical exam hence can not say for sure about the origin of the abscess. It needs x-ray and second opinion of a dentist who can examine.
Avatar n tn He had a perirectal abscess that required surgery but came back before he was properly diagnosed. It was then closed by medicine. Now it is not open but it looks like a knot rather than a flat surface as it once was. Is this normal? He doesn't go back to the Dr. for a couple of months and I don't know if I should take him on. It looks as though he has another raised area of skin also, but there is no drainage. I am so new at this that everything concerns me.
1657607 tn?1302280279 Hello, It looks like an abscess or carbuncle. Apply warm compresses and keep the area clean. Drainage is done only when it becomes soft and forms a head. Take some over the counter pain reliever and consult a doctor for examination and antibiotics prescription. Till that time, you can apply Mupirocin or Neosporin on the sore. Also wear cotton clothes and use a mild soap like Dove.
Avatar m tn I have been having problems with a cyst or abscess that was what I am going to call dormant for a long time. I had it checked by a dermatologist he said since it was in the muscle part of my back he would not recommend to have it cut out...Now its inflamed went to a clinic they said to just heat compress it then wet to my PCP who game me SULFA and some pain killers told me also to heat compress it...now it is no longer HOT it was a HOT spot but now it looks PURPLE.
Avatar f tn I had an abscess that wasn't healing. My CRS said a fistulotomy was the only way to heal it. So I suffered with the pain, draining, pussing, etc for three weeks before the surgery. I had the surgery on Wed 6/12. Doctor said it went well. There is no packing and he said antibiotics weren't necessary. I'm wondering if I'm healing normally at this point. It's only been two days, but there is still a small amount of puss. I'm doing site baths several times per day.
Avatar f tn I'd also like to know how to tell if te abscess is healing correctly. Mine doesn't really drain puss nor blood anymore even since it burst, but looks aweful. I don't have any pain but just looking at the wound makes me cringe. Anyone who's had abscesses before and have healed, how do I know that my abscess is healing? As if right now it looks like a fresh wound and it's been 6 days post burst. Thank you!!
Avatar f tn It may not be life threatening, but it sounds as if you definitely have an infection going on, which is what anal abscess and resulting fistula (channel that is created from the abscess from which the chronic pus or mucous drains) is. This is something that will not likely go away on its own, and should be looked at and treated medically, since an infection is present. Best wishes. I hope all goes well for you.
