Zoloft mechanism of action

Common Questions and Answers about Zoloft mechanism of action

zoloft

Avatar f tn It's hard to say WHY you had panic attacks. It could have been part of a discontinuation symptom from d/c'ing the Paxil (like a w/d), because while you were started on a new med (Zoloft) while coming off the Paxil, they aren't identical in their mechanism of action, and you could still experience some w/d. Paxil is notoriously hard to come off of. What was the dose you were at when you stopped taking it and what was the dose of Zoloft?
Avatar m tn I am not physically restricted - I walk 1 mile or more day and do 10 minutes of other light exercises most days. My BP runs under 120/80 most of the time. I understand carvedilol helps prevent stiffening of the heart muscle and can help restore LV function to some degree. How specially, so it do this? What is the biochemical mechanism?
Avatar m tn The Zoloft dose seems to be pretty close to the Paxil dose, although due to all of these meds varying in mechanism of action, it is impossible to find a perfect dose to start at with the new med....for each individual person. I think breaking up the Zoloft dose like he did will be helpful to you as well. There is no way we would be able to tell you what dose your doctor will Rx you, that is something you need to discuss with him.
4981427 tn?1371670469 Hey hon. Good to hear from you again! I think I told you before that even after each dosage increase, you have to give the med the same amount of time to work, 4-6 weeks. Now, usually with the increases, the improvements will be noticeable a little faster than the initial adjustment period, but it's still recommended to give it ample time. I also recall that you were previously on a pretty substantial dose of Zoloft right? Like 100 or 150mg?
Avatar n tn Blood levels of cyclosporine are increased if taken with grapefruit juice. A plausible mechanism involves the combined inhibition of enteric CYP3A4 and P-glycoprotein, which potentially leads to serious adverse events (e.g., nephrotoxicity).Blood levels of tacrolimus (Prograf) can also be equally affected for the same reason as with cyclosporine.
Avatar n tn Zoloft in an SSRI. It is not uncommon for an SSRI antidepressant to lose effectiveness over time. Often, changing antidepressants will reinstate the therapeutic effect. I'm not sure the reason an antidepressant loses its effectiveness is known since their mechanism of action is also unknown. (The "chemical imbalance" canard is just a hypothesis/marketing slogan). Increased irritability is often a characteristic of depression.
Avatar m tn The mechanism of action of CampralĀ® (acamprosate calcium) Delayed-Release Tablets in maintenance of alcohol abstinence is not completely understood. Originally, several neurotransmitter systems, including GABA, were investigated for a possible role in Campral's mechanism of action. However, recent evidence suggests Campral's main interaction is with the glutamate system. Chronic alcohol exposure is hypothesized to alter the normal balance between neuronal excitation and inhibition.

Avatar m tn Oyakawa I am in my 3rd year of medical school and I was wondering the mechanism of action of steroid injections in the eyelid causing cataracts. It is not an osmotic agent so why does that occur? thanks so much.
1458799 tn?1328757528 Pharmacodynamics Bupropion is a relatively weak inhibitor of the neuronal uptake of norepinephrine and dopamine, and does not inhibit monoamine oxidase or the re-uptake of serotonin. While the mechanism of action of bupropion, as with other antidepressants, is unknown, it is presumed that this action is mediated by noradrenergic and/or dopaminergic mechanisms." (from drugs.com) The most important thing you need to keep in mind is that this is the next step in addressing your anxiety....
Avatar n tn I would also request that your Mother educate herself on the mechanism of action of antidepressant medications so maybe she will have some understanding as to what she did to your body when she took your pills away from you without consulting with your Doctor. There are many resources out there that offer education on the subject. I would recommend just googling it and you will find thousands of pages of information to share with your Mother.
382218 tn?1341181487 Thanks for posting this DV. My favorite part was the mechanism of action for Tecfidera. "Poorly understood...
Avatar f tn re not equivalent, they all work to obtain the same goal, but the mechanism of action to GET to that goal varies greatly between meds, therefore it's not as straightforward as just substituting one for another. I would urge you to not do anything until you can talk to your doctor about making a new plan to make the transition smoother. The one dose of Lexapro isn't a big deal, but I would ask about a new plan.
Avatar f tn Well, I picked my day September 22nd as my last day of meds. Nothing special about that day (yet) except it is a Wednesday and I want the weekend for what I think will be the worst days 3&4. I am such a nerd but I printed out a taper schedule and I start tomorrow. Today I started taking a multi vitamin, potasium suppliment (I get bad cramps), and Zoloft since I hear depression is bad and I use to take it so I have a good 30 day supply.
Avatar f tn Plavix has a unique mechanism of action by blocking the amplification of platelet activation by released ADP, and often used with aspirin to prevent the risk of clots for the first year after DES implant. Plavix and aspirin have different mechanism of action to prevent clots. After a year, plavix is usually discontinue as the risk for clots is decreased, and aspirin is continued long term. The risk of a clot is about 3%.
2144876 tn?1341432818 The mechanism may be related to induction of metabolism. The risk of CNS-depressant side effects, such as sedation and apathy, may be increased with this combination. Consult an expert neurologist. He may be able to suggest what is best for you. I hope it helps. Take care and regards.

Avatar n tn I am trying to wean off of wellbutrin and start trazodone for depression and stay on zoloft for anxiety. If someone can help me I would greatly appreciate it.
1504401 tn?1387565861 Best of luck with your treatment. We are all so different, I won't take pain killers but felt the need to take Zoloft to help with the "Riba Rage". I never really felt any joint pain pre tx but they sure did hit me when I started.
Avatar f tn Potassium is a chemical element and it is part of the electrolyte that should be in balance with other lytes to adequately conduct an electrical impulse that originates with the sinus node in the right atrium. The mechanism of action is not completely understood, but what is when a voltage (unit of potential for conduction) and electrolyte there will conduction and passage of electrical impluses.
Avatar m tn It's difficult to describe, but occasionally my heartbeat will feel full of air. What I mean by that is when I get startled or I get an adrenaline rush (sometimes even randomly), my heartbeat becomes harder (normal) but then I get this weird sensation as if my heart is beating air inside of it. It's not really pain but it's highly uncomfortable and disconcerting. Could it be some sort of rhythm issue? Not sure how else to describe it.
Avatar n tn I have taken Zoloft in the past and am back on it now. With this type of medicaiton, I suggest talking to your doctor about discontinuing it. It should be discontinued slowly over time, especially depending on the length of time you have been on it.
Avatar f tn Well, he can give a medication or two that will indeed curb it. For example, I take an SSRI called Zoloft, and while it's for my depression, it also has the effect of calming my tendency to be obsessive about stuff. On the list of reasons why Zoloft is prescribed, OCD is one of them. I didn't even realize how often I would get "stuck" on doing a particular thing until I began taking that drug. Now it's wonderful...
Avatar m tn http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/578705 Ribavirin improves early responses to peginterferon through improved interferon signaling. Gastroenterology. 2010 Jul;139 The therapeutic mechanisms of ribavirin for hepatitis C are unclear. Microarray analyses have shown that ribavirin increases induction of interferon-stimulated genes. We evaluated viral kinetics, serum cytokine expression, and viral mutagenesis during early stages of peginterferon therapy with and without ribavirin.
Avatar f tn Reason being, while both meds are SSRIs, the specific and intricate mechanism of action of each med varies quite a bit. Therefore, you could be experiencing a form of a discontinuation syndrome (fancy term for a w/d like situation). The good news is, introducing the Zoloft WILL help to minimize the severity of those symptoms. Again, your dizziness could be caused by several different things, no one can say for sure, but yes, you are correct that your theory is a possibility.
Avatar f tn Zoloft targets certain serotonin receptors for impact and blocks the normal action of the enzyme that breaks down serotonin so it washes around in those targeted receptor sites longer than the body does it in normal action. Wellbutrin prevents the breakdown of norepinephrine and dopamine -- completely different. So, a question: are you seeing a regular doc or a psychiatrist? Whatever doc you have, and again this is just me, I'd get a different one.
Avatar m tn Seeing an orthodontist is advised.
