wrist and thumb pain diagnosis

I have some pain in my right wrist where my wrist and thumb connect. When I pick up heavy things it hurts, not unbearable but not pleasant. I can pop the third thumb joint every now and then by pulling on the thumb or squeezing the wrist and it feels wonderful to do, usually in the morning when I wake up. The pain stops. I have no weakness at all, just pain. I skateborded as a kid and had my share of falls, I'm twenty six now.

small bump has arrisen on the area of the wrist where the thumb and wrist attach. painful to use thumb. can move thumb with other hand no pain. skin in this area also sentitive to touch. hard to grasp anything with right hand. I wear a small brace on this hand during day hours to be able to do my job.

s tendonitis there will be redness, swelling and pain on the thumb side of wrist. If this is the case then diagnosis is almost confirmed. Diagnosis is further confirmed by Finkelstein test: A fisted hand is bent towards little finger causing immense pain. If splint, rest and anti-inflammatory are not helping then you will have to opt for surgery.

I've googled my symptoms, seen various doctors, tried countless treatments, and have immobilized my wrist too many times to not get valid answers, so I am resorting to this forum. Hey all, About a month ago, I woke up with some pretty sharp wrist pain in my left wrist (I am right handed) with some swelling over the thumb side of my wrist. It is very localized pain and swelling, radiating from just behind my wrist bone to the base of my thumb.

My best suggestion to you is to make an appointment with a neurologist or an orthopedist specializing in hand and wrist surgery. You need a diagnosis of what is causing your pain. It sounds like nerve involvement to me but I'm NOT a doctor. So do yourself a favor and make that appointment. Please keep us updated on how you're doing. Stick around. I'm sure someone else will be able to help you. In the meantime, you might try icing your hand and see if that helps.

Hi Nicky, sorry about the wrist and thumb pain, i've been going through thumb joint pain for a year now and for me its not good. my suggestion is find the BEST "orthopedic hand doctor" and yes the specialize in hands. don't just go for the closest to the house unless he's the best. don't get a youngster and find out if the doctor has had complaints against him through the internet.

Months later I had a routine blood draw,followed immediately by pressure and pain from hand to shoulder( worse from hand to wrist, and gradually, over seven days, pain localized to right hand and wrist...thought i might have broken my wrist somehow, but x-rays at urgent care were negative) ..

I still have pain in my hand, on the top of my hand (mostly between my thumb and pointer finger) and under my thumb on the side of my wrist and hand. It also aches on the opposite side of my hand. I am able to use my hand and wrist to do most things. My hand is still slightly swelling at night and I wake up with a stiff hand. I am noticing the most pain when my hand and wrist are at rest. Could I still have a fracture somewhere and not know it.

I used to have a lot of pain in my large thumb knucke and wrist area. I thought maybe it was carpal tunnel, but was tested and the nerve is fine. I could not even cup my hand to hold water to wash my face. If I bumped it the pain was unbareable. You may not believe this, but I bought this band call Q-ray and within 24 hours the pain subsided so much that I hardly notice it at all. This was over 5 years ago and I am still relatively pain free. Mind over matter....

My thumb on my left side ( the side that has had all symptoms) is extremely weak and it hurts all the way into my wrist when I pick up or squeeze anything. Pressure of any sort is excruciating. I have done the carpel tunnel wrist test positions that my general prac taught me when I was having neuropathy and urgent care tried to say it wa carpel tunnel. Anyways long story short, no pain when I do this position. Only pain when pressure is applied.

The books I was pulling out slipped and crashed down onto the thumb side of right wrist. It hurt but I continued working ( I have good pain tolerance and stubborn). Thumb side of wrist has some bruising , swollen. Doesn't looked deformed. Icing and taken advil. The area that is painful is scaphoid and down to the bone that is roundish (radial?). Today something happened..

It was fine one day and then the next morning I woke up in severe pain. Sometimes the pain is going all the way up into my elbow and my arm from wrist to elbow hurts, sometimes it just shoots up to my elbow, but most of the time it is just in my wrist and it hurts really bad regardless of what I'm doing. I can be laying in bed to go to sleep and it hurts or trying to do something that requires use of my hand.

You can buy wrist splints for this. Or bandage half the arm, wrist and hand to give support. You need to rest the arm and hand. Repetitive work and working at the computer will make it much worse. See your doctor for the correct diagnosis. The doctor will be able to send you for nerve conduction tests to see if it is a carpal tunnel problem. Best wishes.

It has been about 2 weeks now since my wrist started hurting. The pain is on the thumb side of the wrist. It don't think it is a fracture because there is no swelling or discoloration. But it sure hurts a lot. When I wake up it hurts a lot - even for the slightest moment and then the range of motion improves as the day progresses. I am not sure if it is a a ligament tear.

I have been to numerous doctors including neurologists, orthopedists and hand surgeons. Tests done include 2 nerve conductions, nerve block, mri on thumb, wrist and spinal cord, x-ray on hand and a ultrasound. None of them have been able to diagnose what the problem is. Is there anything else that could be causing this pain?

t open a water bottle or loch anything more than one piece of paper and that still hurts. Also, it goes numb, and feels like cold pain from the mcp and ucl into my wrist and the webbing between my thumb and finger. Any help would be nice. I am 17 BTW.

Every site I look at says it is felt at the base of the thumb or wrist but although I know I have De Quervains (the test was quite painful) the worst of the pain will often be not those two tendons next to each other but the thumb tendon that is closer to the top of the wrist and if i pinch my thumb and forefinger together there is a sharp pain where the finger and thumb tendon meet on top at the wrist.

I got ankle surgery done and it has been a month now, so I went to take a shower and tried to keep my weight off of my ankle and slipped and hurt my wrist. I have pain from the bone that connects to my thumb and it goes to my wrist. Do you think I may have sprained it? It does hurt when I move it in different ways.

Dear Doctor, I work on the computer and have a lot of typing work every day for 8-10 hours. Of late, I have noticed mild pain in my right hand and wrist especially when on the computer. The pain is more neuralgic type and not necessarily bone or muscle pain. I feel it is also finger specific, especially all my fingers other than my thumb and pinkie all of which I use to move the cursor. I am afraid I may have carpal tunnel. Please do suggest what to do now.

Very helpful thank you, I did go see a doctor and shes 99% sure it's tendonitis and this is just the first time it has ever become inflamed. She has has sent me for X-rays I will be getting tomorrow and she wants me to see a physiotherapist. She wont tell me 100% till she runs more tests but between the ice and heat sand of course the Tylenol the pain is gone but now I'm feeling pain in my left thumb.

The pain has now duplicated itself further up my arm same size area towards the inside of my elbow and is also now doing the same thing towards my thumb joint.

They did an ultrasound and found no clots. She has always has swelling and extreme pain in the right wrist as well as the arm and shoulder. Do you think the Chiari is causing the swelling or could it be the bulding discs causing her pain and swelling? She also suffers from such severe leg and hip pain as well as severe headaches. We recently went to see a genetic doc in Los Angeles and she has referred us on to a Neuro surgeon for further evaluation.
