Vicodin for pain during pregnancy

Common Questions and Answers about Vicodin for pain during pregnancy

vicodin

Avatar f tn i discussed this with my dr. and asked for something for the pain and he gave me a prescription for vicodin. after he gave me the medication he told me that the hospital drug tests all newborns and that if the baby had narcotics in his system that children services will be called on me. how true is this? will i lose my baby?
Avatar f tn Sometimes women are prescribed pain medications during pregnancy because the benefits outweigh the risks. Being in severe pain may cause more problems to a baby then the pain medication you took. I would let your OB know about it. Congrats on your pregnancy!!
Avatar f tn It may be a good thing to talk to tour Dr about weaning off for delivery, also, if you want pain control during delivery, being dependant on pain meds like taking them regular, some if the iv psince meds will put you in instant withdrawal instead of helping.
Avatar f tn There are other options for pain control during pregnancy that is safer during both pregnancy and breastfeeding - medication called Subutex, but both of your doctors must be familiar with it. You may need to consider looking for a physician who is more familiar with that medication during pregnancy if that is the case. Take good care of yourself.
Avatar n tn Does anyone know if it is more harmful for me to try to endure chronic excrutiating pain while pregnant vs. the Vicodin my doctor put me on to control it? My pain is related to the need for a root canal which has been put on hold for about a week due to the need for a specialist. thanks for any advice This discussion is related to prescription Narcotic and pregnancy.
Avatar f tn It says tramadol is category C though. If you don't know what that means just type in goggle pregnancy category C.
Avatar f tn I have sporadically used opiates (vicodin) during my pregnancy for chronic back pain that was not prescribed by my doctor. I am now 35 weeks along and very worried that my baby is going to show signs of opiate withdrawal at birth, and that social services will take him away from me. When I say that I used sporadically, I mean that I would use for only 3-4 days once a month.
Avatar f tn . Well my doctor prescribed vicodin, 3 a day, 5/500, for my sciatic pain. Now I am 20 days away from delivery and he's saying its possible my son will be born addicted! I dont understand why i wasnt told about this earlier. do you think it's enough time to wean off or stop conpletely and he will be ok? I'd rather be in pain than have him go through that. Does anyone have actual experience with this?
Avatar n tn We do have some CP (chronic pain) members here who have had to take pain meds throughout their pregnancy - one of them just gave birth to a healthy baby girl a few weeks ago. While there are pregnant women who need to take narcotics during their pregnancy, it's always best to check in with your OB/GYN to make sure it is safe in your situation. They may want to change your pain meds, adjust the dosage, etc. I honestly believe in this case, it's much better to be safe than sorry.
7369582 tn?1395996075 I would try tylenol first. But vicodin is safe to take during pregnancy. Some obgyns actually give it to patients in a lot of pain.
Avatar f tn Just came back from the doctors and ive been having pelvic and back pain...horrible pain abd the dr prescribed me a low dose vicodin idk if I want to take them...anybody else with the same issues??? I tried looking online ti see the effects but couldn't really find anything. ..im still in pain don't really know what to do. ......
Avatar n tn t offer any comments to your vicodin question, however, I do suggest you let your doctor know sooner than later, in case these are not safe to take during pregnancy. He/she will be the best to advise you what alternative meds you can take for pain management. Congratulations again, and keep us posted.
12103503 tn?1423448886 I was taking hydrocodone 10/325mg my whole entire pregnancy for extreme back pain.. as I have 2 budging discs. In my lower back and pregnancy only made it worse... I was told it is ok just don't get addicted to it because the baby can have withdrawal symptoms I stopped taking it a week before I went into labour for my c section and my baby is and completely beautiful healthy 4 month old little girl.
Avatar f tn They will be able to explain to you any possible side effects as well as the risks and benefits of taking the medication during pregnancy. The pedi can also let you know how they would handle the situation if the baby was born addicted to the medication. One thing is for sure though. Make sure that your OB is aware of ALL meds that you are currently taking, and DONT stop taking any medications suddenly before speaking with your Dr.
Avatar n tn I was sober off everything during the first 3 months of pregnancy. Lately, I have been abusing 1000 mg vicodin and I take about 3 a day. I am in pain, but it has turned into recreational and possibly physical addiction. I also take an occasional xanax as well. Have I hurt any aspect of the baby's development. I feel like I hate myself and I need help. I'm also on 60 mg of prozac a day, which the doctor told me was ok, and he monitors my meds.
Avatar f tn I take vicodin and I'm 23 weeks pregnant. I was taking it before pregnancy for muscle issues and my Dr told me no need to stop till end of 3rd trimester so baby doesn't become addicted. He told me it can't hurt baby and the stress caused from your body being in so much pain could. You do need to rapper down as you go along tho.
Avatar n tn I was in the hospital at 10 weeks for some extreme pain I was having. They prescribed Vicodin and said it was safe to take during pregnancy as long as it was taken in moderation. I don't know what the effects might be if any if you're taking it long term and several times a day, but if I were you, I would definitely talk to the doctor about it. Congrats on your pregnancy!
Avatar f tn I too have been addicted to vicodin for the past two years. i am weeks away from having my second child, the ob said it was okay to use but never really said how many. My ob said the baby shouldnt be born with any addiction that it is very very rare and they have people taking high doses of stronger narcs like methadone and are pregnant. i have to take in the am when i get up as my neck hurts the worst when i try to sleep at night.
Avatar f tn Hi! Congratulations! Yes, it is safe to take Vicodin while pregnant. As with anything else during pregnancy however, the less the better. Take only the minimum dosage that alleviates the pain, and take it only when plain Tylenol and other methods haven't worked. One other thing about the combination of Vicodin and pregnancy is that it is a real set up for constipation! So watch out for that! Good luck!
Avatar f tn I'm only on my 3rd shot but I know the first couple days afterwards are the worse so it may be just the treatments. I am on a form of morphine which I have been on for a couple years for some other problems that I have. I was on Vicoden at one time but my doc took me off because of the acetametaphin (I know that's spelled wrong) and the affects that it has on the liver. That was before I was even diagnosed with Hep C.
Avatar n tn Vicodin is actually ok to take during pregnancy if you are prescribed them for pain and take the smallest dose. I was in a car accident during the first trimester of my last pregnancy and was prescribed vicodin. Doctor said as long as I took it in moderation and only when needed that it shouldn't do any harm. But like with everything during pregnancy, the best thing to do would be to contact your doctor and see what they think and maybe get an ultrasound to reassure yourself.
Avatar f tn Yes, I was prescribed narcotics for different reasons a few tones so far during my pregnancy and they are safe. I was also admitted in yhe I fectious disease maternity section of the hosp a few wks ago and I was given oxycodone every 4hrs for 9 days.
Avatar f tn The doctor at the er told me it was on for me to take vicodin and gave me some to take home to manage pain. I however, heard that you can't take anything but tylenol. So any thoughts out there?
