Common Questions and Answers about Toprol xl for svt

toprol

Avatar f tn Hi, Everyone. My EP switched me from Sotalol (160 mg daily) to Toprol XL (25 mg daily). His instructions were to stop taking Sotalol (no weaning) and start taking Toprol. It was a HUGE leap of faith for me as I have tried to not obsess about this. Today was my first day. I'm doing fine, but want to know if anyone else has made the same switch and faired well. Thanks!
Avatar n tn I had an episode of svt in June. Given adenosine to stop it. Then prescribed Toprol XL to keep heart rate low. It seems that I have pacs every day. Yesterday it was constant for about 9 hours. About one per minute. My chest feels like it is quaking, makes me fearfull, nauseous, generally weak. Saw cardiologist yesterday, we both wonder if Toprol is making situation worse. It's never been this constant before. I have another appointment in a month.
Avatar f tn Dear Di: I have taken toprol xl for about 12 years and have not had a problem with it.. The XL stands for extended life.. it is not all released at once in your system..So I would say the reason you cant take it just when you have a problem is that your body does not get the full effect immediately.. You have to take it and build it up as I understand it.. dunno not a dr...but thats the way Ive always understood it.. basically its a very safe medication to take... hope this helps.. .
Avatar n tn I had an SVT in Sep of 2007. Cardiologist started me on Toprol XL. The side effects were awful. After doing a stress test and telling me I had no heart problems, he took me off of it cold turkey. I was off of it for 48 hours and the whole time my blood pressure was high and pulse never went below 120. I went to My family physician and he was very concerned about my blood pressure which was 162/106 at the time of my visit with a heart rate of 129.
Avatar f tn I have taken Toprol XL or some beta blocker since the 1980s. I was originally (at that time) diagnosed with mitral valve prolapse and sinus tachycardia. I recently wore a 14 day monitor and today my cardiologist said I have STV. I assume he can tell the difference between STV and sinus tachycardia but to me they feel the same. I already take 50mg Toprol XL twice a day. He wants me to take a half pill extra when I take my regular pill.
Avatar n tn ve been off Toprol for 4 days. I was only on Toprol XL for a week anyhow. Anyone have these symptoms before? Should I worry? What would cause me to only get PVCs now when I first stand up? Has anyone heard of PVCs happening only when you first stand up? Thanks!
Avatar f tn I suggest you call the doctor or pharmacist. You are on a very low dose. I take 50mg of Toprol XL twice daily and that does not totally keep the SVT under control. It's possible you are not taking enough.
Avatar m tn Hello, I have been taking toprol xl 25 for about 3 months for palpitations and high blood pressure. Recently I had a visit with an awesome electrophysiologist who is 95% convinved that I have SVT due to my symptomology and triggers. He was happy to do an EP study ASAP but I am not entirely convinced and so I asked to do a holter monitor in 2 weeks and he obliged. Problem is he wants me to completely stop my beta blocker Toprol XL 25 before I strap on the holter monitor. I am terrified!
Avatar f tn HI I just read your post. I was taking Toprol xl for over a year for sinus tach. My pharmacy switched me to the generic brand. 2 weeks later I started getting skipped beats (PVC I presume). I had never had them before. Went to the cardio and he didn't think it could be the generic brand, but switched me back to Toprol. It has been almost a month and I am still getting pvc's. I do believe it was the generic. If we don't complain, then no one will know.
Avatar f tn I am currently taking 50 mg a day Toporol XL for Pac's. My Primary Care Physcian wants to increase my dosage to 100 mg per day. (double dosage). I also have Sinus Tachycardia which is under control with medications. My concern is that doubling my medication could lower the heart rate too much and cause serious problems. I was told it would have to be doubled since the tablets are 50 mg each. Is there any other solution or medication that comes in a lower dosage for this problem?
Avatar n tn but you must make sure it is the generic for toprol xl because there is metoprolol succinate which is the generic for toprol xl and metoprolol tartrate which is the generic for lopressor. They both work in two different ways so they can not be interchanged at the same dose. I asked this question before toprol xl became a generic.
Avatar n tn Karen, somethat I wanted to mention to you with regards to your Toprol dosage. I'm almost positive that Toprol XL dosage is the same as Metoprolol. Toprol XL is merely a time release version. (BTW, you could save a lot of p;rescription cost by taking Metoprolol) If your dosage is 25mg per day, this is a teeny weeny dose, the smallest available. By contrast, 400mg. has been administered to other patients. I was on 200mg. at one point, and at 200 pounds, I was a zombie at that level.
Avatar n tn I have been on this combination for 6+ years and doing pretty well with them. In May 2008 I was started on Toprol XL 25 mg. It worked for my blood pressure and lowered it but it also made my depression worse and I finally went to my doctor to get off of them. I am now weaning off of the Toprol XL. I am on the second day of 12.5mg and I can't tell you how bad I have felt all day. Extreme anxiety and jittery. I CANNOT wait for this drug to be out of my system.
Avatar f tn Yes you can find online a few web sites , that will tell you this ! look under side effects of toprol xl - you can find it by reading (problems with toprol xl) it should come up ! a long while ago (years) bbc news reported the u.k medical asso , had found beta blockers caused cholesterol to build up in most people who took it. so they limited the use of beta blockers - they also reported that due to adverse side effects , beta blockers would be in limited useage in the u.k.
Avatar f tn Sorry I wouldn't quite sure how to title the topic cause it's kind of a broad range question. So I'll just start from the beginning of what's going on with me and maybe get some you guys input at where I'm at today. Okay so I've always had palpitations in my life. Through my teens and twenties if I had 3 palpitations a year that was pretty high. So my heart problems I've always been very minimal nothing has really ever worried me.
Avatar n tn Has this happened before? Now, you have fainted once, but how often are you dizzy with it? 25mg of Toprol xl is not very much so you have a lot of room to move within the limitations of med treatment only. You need to see your md and likely get a holter or an event monitor or both. If you have paroxysmal atrial fibrillation, and it happens often, you may need to be anticoagulated (on blood thinners) to prevent strokes.
Avatar m tn I take 75mg Flecainide 2x daily, 25 toprol XL. Four weeks ago started having break thru PACs. Maybe stress I dont know. As you know PACs trigger SVT. Now past two weeks the PACs are constantly trying to trigger SVT. So every evening I have back and forth tachy with the PACs in between. Some nights it goes to complete SVT. Its Crazy. Saw my EP today. We upped the Flec to 100 mg 2x day to try and stop the PACs and in turn again try and control SVT, My heart ultrasound today was perfect normal.
343006 tn?1314446471 (for nothing at all ) Im dead sure its the medications, I did re-check side effect listings for toprol xl - and found out of 10 sites for side effects, 8 listed ringing of the ears for toprol xl. I then e mailed the makers of toprol xl - and they confirmed toprol xl can cause ringing of the ears as a known side effect. I also checked DIovan and its listed as well - Due to this , I guess the next best thing to do is see my Doctor and complain to get off the medications or switch them.
Avatar f tn I was diagnosed with PACs about six months ago, and was prescribed Toprol XL, which I have been taking daily. About a month ago, the PACs started to become more frequent, and now I have well over a hundred a day, just about every day. Should I be concerned about this?
Avatar f tn I know for sure the switch to generic caused me all of the problems because I have been back on the Brand name TOPROL XL 50 mg for 3 days and I am VERY happy to say I feel WONDERFUL and I have my life back! Beta Blockers have always worked for me (been on them for at least 20 years), but this generic stuff is horrible! The people who make the generics have no idea how they reak havok on people with arrhythmias, I was MISERABLE and couldn't figure it out. I lost 3 months of my life.
Avatar n tn First time i had racing heart was in 2003 and my heart rate was 185. Was put on toprol xl 25mg and i take xanax when i have a spell. Well 3 nights ago i had another spell with racing heart that went on for 3 hrs so i went to hospital, heart rate was 180 and was given medicine that stops the heart and gets it back in rhythm twice, didn't work. Was given verapamil, no good. Finally was given cardizem i think is how you spell it, and some ativan and it finally went back to normal.
Avatar n tn I am now on toprol XL 50mg once a day. My blood pressure is running 120/71 now. when the PVC are happening I am dizzy and cannot think straight. I dont know how I can just live with this when I feel so flush and cannot function. Seems like 1/3 less pulses means 30 % less oxygen carrying RBC are circulating. It seems debilitating to me. Can the toprol XL dose be increased without running my blood pressure down too low. How high can it be raised safely.
Avatar m tn Yes, I've worn a Holter for 24 hours just this past week, and it showed my average pulse at 57 with a very few arrhythmias over the 24 hour period. My doctor is happy with my lower heart rate (ie., 57) and I'm not happy with ED. Ostensibly I've been taking Toprol XL for my BP which is now running @104/75 to 120/79. I have had a recent (this month) physical from my PCP and my PSA is 1.0, with testosterone at 770... so prostate doesn't appear to be a problem.
