Common Questions and Answers about What is toprol xl used for

toprol

Avatar m tn My Doctor started me on Toprol-XL approximately 10 days ago. A low dosage from what I read (.25mg). My two primary side effect symptons are tiredness/lethargy and a bit of anxiety/nervousness. These are the most common from all that I have read. My question is will these eventually go away as my body gets used to/ more tolerant of the drug?
Avatar n tn has put me on Toprol-xl 25 gm a day. What is this medicine for and the side effects. My blood pressure is fine so is the heart beat.Have high chlorestol, runs in the family, had quad by-passes 21 yrs ago, am on zocor 80 grams a day.
Avatar n tn There is Toprol, which is not time released and there is Toprol XL, which is time released. Stopping Toprol suddenly could cause heart failure, so you need to be careful. When are you able to start the Lopressor? Are you without any beta blocker currently or are you taking the Atenolol? Tenormin is the brand name for Atenolol. The brand name seems to work better, at least for everyone that I know who have taken it.
Avatar n tn Beta blockers are safer than the anti-arrhythmic drugs that are sometimes used for pvc's. Toprol XL will lower your heart rate and blood pressure and the sensation of your heart beating. However, it is unlikely to solve your pvc issues. Sometimes it works well for people, some people it helps a little, and more people it does not really do anything. My pvc's were mainly due to anxiety and when I pop a Xanax tab I feel much better. Anyways, I hope the beta blocker works well for you!
Avatar n tn I was taking Toprol XL for a over a year for high BP, long before getting palps, so they obviously didn't prevent them or slow them down. Guess, like with most meds, it effects everyone differently.
Avatar m tn Toprol XL is the the timed release version of Metoprolol. If you're on 25mg, that is a teeny-tiny dose, I was on 100mg, at one time, and others have been on dosages as high as 400mg. Stopping it should not be a problem. For my ablation I had to stop my dose for the procedure. My electrophysiologist told me as well to just stop it cold. Because I find it hard to follow instructions (what do they know) ;-) I decided to dial it back slowly instead. Same results, except I did it my way.
343006 tn?1314450071 Hi : I am on Toprol xl and Diovan daily. for h.b.p. iv been on the meds for about 5 years total time. I have had nothing but adverse side effects from the meds. sometimes so bad, I cant stand it ! between blurred vision and harsh cramps and belly bloating and waight gain almost overnight..its hard to belive that a pill could do this ! as well my hair is thinning out and balding in spots !! ouch !!
406399 tn?1201887900 I havent posted here for a time, and was on Toprol xl also and DIovan drove me nuts for years!!!! I had so meny problems on that stuff- I was a walking zombie. I like you found a New Doctor and he switched me off the toprol xl /Diovan cold turkey!! onto the same meds as you, however I want you to know, I had withdrawal symptoms daily nightly for over 2 weeks! its no fun! no joy ride ! so expect some problems to happen while switching meds. Toprol is a nastybad drug to take!
Avatar n tn First off dizziness and such can be caused by low blood pressure. Second toprol xl is a beta blocker often used to treat people with high blood pressure in patients that have diabetes. So if you have low blood pressure Im not so sure why the Dr put you on toprol. I would definately call your Pharmacist and talk with them and see what they say. Then call your Dr. if they dont agree then maybe a second oppinion is the way to go.
Avatar f tn Man, I hope you catch a break from all this soon. For what it's worth, my short term memory is not what it used to be either, although mine is due to 3 little kids! That's interesting about your EF. My doctors always told me not to put too much stock in a different number on different echo's since it is, like you said, an estimate. I freaked a while back because one echo said 65 and then another 55. I bet yours is something like that then. Good luck comparing all your echos.
Avatar n tn Hi, On Tues. I was prescribed Toprol XL to help my SVT. So far I am feeling really sluggish, sleepy, no appetite and I think it has considerably lowered my bp though I have no way to check. Despite these side effects I am feeling better on this med. My question is will these side effects lessen or go away after I've been on this med for a time, or are they something I'll just need to get used to? I've had toprol before but it was half this dose and I didn't experience any side effects.
343006 tn?1314450071 ahh you have one bad effect I read , dizzyness .. that adds a strike aginst Toprol xl !! I just got off toprol xl after weaning down slow for the past 2months, I have to say I feel wonderfull ! have energy and the one bad side effect I had went away totaly now.. low blood sugar problems. caused with long term useage 3 to 5 yrs .. I hit 5years on this junk ! I taking a Natural medication used for stubborn high blood pressure and its working so far.. fingers crossed it stays working !
Avatar f tn I still don't feel 100% and have been back on the brand TOPROL XL for 9 days now. Keep in mind I didn't know what was happening to me, I never thought twice about the switch to generic, it was cheaper and I also had a lot of stress going on in my life at the time. My pharmacacy switched my "Toprol XL 50 mg" to a Generic one called "Metoprolol Succinate ER 50 mg" (manufactured by Sandoz) in December 2007.
Avatar n tn I have low BP (80/50 typically) and have been put on 25 mg daily of toporol XL. I've read that toporol is used for high BP not low and concerned about the risk. Any others with the same expereience?
Avatar f tn I'm just wondering if anyone has been switched from toprol xl to lopressor and if so what kind of side effects, if any, have you had? I was taking toprol xl 25 mg in the am and 12.5 in the evening, and continued to do the same thing with the generic lopressor. Unfortunately for me, this was NOT the same, b/c the lopressor only lasts 10-12 hours and I was getting breakthrough tachycardia quite often. Thanks for any input!
406399 tn?1201887900 what is the best way to wean off ,of toprol xl beta blocker medication. iv been on it for 2yrs now and I dont like its effects at all. been to 2 doctors and they refused to take me off it ? or change it to another medication. I was put on this med for palpitations that come and go. and high blood pressure that wont drop down easy at times! my ekg tests over the years have been normal and had stress tests done , again normal ? why then toprol xl ??
687614 tn?1244201579 I take my BP and P and it is sitting just a little lower than what it is before I took Toprol. Now everyone, considering if you were in my shoes and doctor's won't seem to give me a time of day at the moment... what would all of you do?... break the tablet in half and take 25 mg in the evening and hope no SVT's and you could get up with your high heart rate in the morning? or to continue with the 50 mg and put up with this awful 2:00 am slump?
Avatar n tn this drug also reduces the bloodflow to the toes and fingers...what we call extrmeties. for a drug to be able to do all this it is likely that the sexual function may be affected.without being graffic sexual function does require the use of an extremet...remember do not stop taking this drug without advising your dr. the sexual dysfunction can be worked out by maybe reducing the dose, your dr can work this out.
Avatar m tn I had read that Toprol could have these side effects and, though her family did not believe me when I told them, they finally got the doctor to take her off the toprol for 3 weeks - but they said it did not make a difference so they put her back on the Toprol. QUESTION: HOw long would it take for someone to regain their full mental capacity after being taken off of Toprol- if Toprol were the problem? Would 3 weeks be long enough?
Avatar n tn all the tests came back fine and the doc thinks it was caused by stress/anxiety or something i ate. i am on a low dosage of toprol xl 50 mg 1 a day.. my question is this. since it happend only once am i better off staying on toprol or taking a anxiety medicine like lexapro daily or taking xanax just when i need it. it seems kind of weird to me taking toprol when nothing is wrong with my heart. any help???
Avatar f tn Even the decaffinated teas have some caffeine. Chamomile is good and really soothing. Also is good for your stomach. Does anyone have any feedback?
Avatar n tn I am on 100mg of Toprol XL twice a day and have had an ablation for Ventricular Tachycardia 4 months ago. I am wondering if the large dose of Toprol could be contributing to an increase in PVC activity?
Avatar n tn Hello. I take Toprol XL and they now have a generic brand for it and I have still been paying for the regular med. not the generic. Does anyone take the generic and have you noticed a difference between the two? I am a little uneasy about generics and especially with my heart med.
Avatar n tn toprol xl posted by judy on March 18, 1999 at 19:39:16: What in the hell is it (Toprol XL)--I believe it is for high blood pressure. And what are some of the side effects (most common)? My husband is on 100 mg. daily (from 50) and hasn't felt well since. The docs aren't sure if he has an intestinal virus or bug or what. I think it is the increased dosage of Toprol XL.

Avatar n tn 37 Hello, I'm a 44 year old male, in good health, non-smoker, reasonable weight, but I was just prescribed Toprol XL ( 50mg, twice per day ) after an electrophysiology study to investigate my recent arrhythmia. I have several concerns; will I have to take this medicine the rest of my life? Will it lose effectiveness over time, forcing me to move on to stronger or different drugs? One of the side effects listed is sexual dysfunction...

Avatar n tn Metoprolol is the GENERIC name for Toprol XL.. The drug which is off patent is available in generics made by different labs, one of them being EON Labs. I was able to determine, without hesitation, that the generic was ineffective. I may as well have taken a placebo for all the difference it made, which is to say that my blood pressure was totally uncontrolled. Of course, the pharmacist insisted the brand name and generics were identical in formulation.
Avatar f tn I went into Rapid A fib about 3 months ago and had to have an emergency Cardioversion. This was first episode for me no reoccurrence so far. My Cardiologist started me on Toprol XL 50mg daily for hypertension and to lessen the chance of slipping back into uncontrollable Rapid A fib again. At first the Toprol seemed to help and I was taking it at night and besides some drowseyness I was no worse for wear and even joined a gym and could do a full 30 mins of moderate cardio with no I’ll effects.
