Common Questions and Answers about Topamax side effects migraines

topamax

Avatar f tn I am on my 2nd week of Topamax. Get ready for some very strange side effects. Your hands and feet and face will tingle and fall asleep. I have no appetite at all. I can go from breakfast to dinner of the next day and not be hungry at all. I have to force myself to eat. I'm forgetting things. I went to Wal Mart and forgot what i went there for. I am on it for migranes so im hoping i can stick it out because my headaches are unbearable. Good luck!
Avatar f tn I'm back with another question :-). DS is 11.5 yo, recently diagnosed. He was put on topamax and imitrex for migraines which are supposedly unrelated and are what sent us to the neurologist in the first place. Migraines continue, some tingling in hands and feet, which is likely the topamax. However, today he had a migraine (been on topamax just over three weeks). Once it wore off I took him to school.
Avatar f tn The cognitive side effects also went away after a couple of months. After about 3 months on Topamax and getting to my maximum dose, I was getting minor headaches and virtually no side effects. The best thing about Topamax as opposed to other migraine drugs is that it doesn't make you gain weight. Topamax gave me my life back.
Avatar f tn Is anyone on here started taking or tried the drug Topamax for their migraines???
Avatar f tn I have a lot of co-workers at a call center who have also tried topamax but say its not usefull and hated the side effects so they stopped.
Avatar f tn Hi.....I have both migraines and depression. My neuro doc put me on Topamax (I take it daily) for migraine management and when I do get "breakthrough" migraines I take Maxalt. The Topamax has worked wonders!!! But it isn't without some nasty side effects. Initially it causes your feet, hands and face to tingle (that goes away)....but it plays hell with your memory (not everyone gets this, but I did). It takes away your appetite (at least it did for me).
Avatar n tn The side effects have been tolerable but I went from 25 to 50 very quick and the side effect were bad: Brain fog, no appetite, tingling, insomnia. I went from 50 to 75mg, 5 weeks later and 75 to 100mg 4 weeks later, working up slowly does help with the side effects. Over time I have found most of my side effects subside: I take it for nerve pain and complex migraines.
Avatar n tn Most of the side effects are dose related. Here is more information about the medication: http://www.drugs.com/topamax.html . Sometimes, dividing the dose into several doses throughout the day may help. Also taking the smallest dose you can take is best to avoid the side effects. Initially, many people have side effects, but after your body gets used to the med. it goes away (usually after a week or 2).
Avatar m tn I would look on the internet for medications that treat migraines and look at all of the side effects. I have found I have to be proactive and do my research and ask the doctor about a specific medication. They don't tell you the side effects of the medicine they prescribe and give you the option to decide if they're worth taking the medicine, you have to find out for yourself! I have found this out after many unfortunate incidents.
Avatar m tn hello, anyone on topamax? I've been on it for about five weeks and its been great for my migraines but I've been having a lot of side effects! like tingling in my hand and feet and really bad heart burn every day! also get moody and cry. very bad fatigue too. will any of this go away???
Avatar n tn I take it for nerve pain and complex migraines. Certain side effects have stayed: anything carbonated taste awful, tingling in hands and feet, small twitch in left eye for last week or so.
Avatar f tn I am on topamax now and some side effects are hard to deal with. my dr is decreasing my dosage. my side effects are that my arms and legs are numb and tingling like pins and needles and I am very tired I have diahreea alot. you have to stay in contact with your doc while on the medication.
Avatar f tn It appears that he has you on the starter dose to work up to minimize side effects. My doctor had me work up about a week at a time - and I stopped working up as soon as I felt better. Everyone is different. For a long time, 25mg did work for me but as I recall, it takes a while to kick in.
424862 tn?1203803456 i have been on topamax for a couple of years now its help me alot i have arritis im not sure what it is but topamx has help me alot i take 150mg 2 times daily i took it while i was pregant
Avatar n tn so you take 50 mg topamax and were able to smoke without any weird side effects? Im wondering because my doctor recently put me on 50 mg topamax for migraines and I used to smoke all the time to relieve stress from work, but i've read horror stories online about mixing topamax and weed.
324184 tn?1308076203 If your daughter starts topamax, be sure to find a urologist. One of the major side effects of topamax is kidney stones. After taking it for my migraines for two years, I had kidney's full of stones. I have had three operations to rid myself of them and the surgery/recovery is very painful. The neurologist found out that I was in the hospital for a week ( the first time) and no kidding..yelled into the phone.. OH MY GOSH...ITS THE TOPAMAX!
Avatar f tn I never experienced nausea with Topamax but i did experience many other side effects. It definitely cleared the migraines the best. However, over time and with the increase dose of 200 mg eventually I became aphasic, unable to recall recent events, numbness in my extremities and eventually lost my job due to the neurological symtoms. Now i am on Inderal or propranolol which is a beta blocker and only 80 mg and it helps the headaches without the side effects. Talk to your doctor and suggest it.
681148 tn?1437661591 My friend who I mentioned earlier, she got kidney stones because of the topamax. This is one of the serious side-effects that topamax can cause, but it is a rare side-effect that only happens in some people. It can be avoided by most people as long as you drink and ENTIRE glass of water with every topamax pill you take. This is extremely important... never take topamax without water!!! But, for a very small number of people topamax can still cause kidney stones, which are extremely painful.
Avatar m tn Hello, i'm a 16 year old boy and i was prescribed topamax 25mg for migraines over a year ago. A few months ago i was also prescribed wellbutrin 300mg and prozac 10mg for depression and anxiety. When I first started taking the topamax i hardly sweated. I did start sweating a fair amount before taking the wellbutrin and prozac but the sweating has just increased since then and i've been getting large stains on my armpits just from sitting in class.
Avatar f tn Ive taken this for about a year now and its been SUCH a lifesaver. It prevents migraines.
Avatar m tn )I was only on it for 10 days, but had terrible side effects. Since stopping the MEDs. the side effects are crazy! I feel all of this anxiety and I cannot sleep, I have bizarre thoughts and zero appetite. This has been going on since I stopped 2 days ago. Anyone else experience this and more importantly how many days til I feel better???
Avatar f tn It sure helps to know when you are not alone and others have the same side effects. Topamax helps my migraines and the weight loss is a plus too but the memory is suffering when it comes to writing and speech...like spelling...sometimes I know the word to use but can not even think of the letters to look it up so I end up using a different word in it's place...very frustrating. Speaking is another story. Sometimes it just isn't worth it to talk at all.
Avatar m tn Many people will choose to stay on medication that has side-effects if the side-effects are not worse than the migraine symptoms. This is a choice that only you and your doctor can make. You may find that the side-effects go away if you have been on the medication long enough too, so you might want to give it a bit longer to see if the side-effects go down a bit. Also, how much Topamax are you taking? The regular full dose after titration is 100mg.
1597714 tn?1299828089 i started taking topamax for my migraines and seizures a long while ago.. my doc had actually put me on topamax and lorazipam together.. it did help my migraines.. its best to please talk to your doctor about this.. im not having as many seizures and only every now and then do i get a bad migraine..
Avatar f tn I have been on 100mg of Topamax for almost a month (the 22nd of this month) for cluster headaches and have had a variety of side effects. I take 50mg in the morning and 50mg at night. I thought I was going to lose my mind honestly. But I was told that the side effects would taper off more than likely. Which the vast majority have. I no longer feel dumber than a rock (I wasn't even able to compose an email without reading it very slowly 4-5 times before sending it). And I feel pretty normal.
