Topamax side effects in children

Common Questions and Answers about Topamax side effects in children

topamax

Avatar f tn I am on my 2nd week of Topamax. Get ready for some very strange side effects. Your hands and feet and face will tingle and fall asleep. I have no appetite at all. I can go from breakfast to dinner of the next day and not be hungry at all. I have to force myself to eat. I'm forgetting things. I went to Wal Mart and forgot what i went there for. I am on it for migranes so im hoping i can stick it out because my headaches are unbearable. Good luck!
Avatar f tn I'm back with another question :-). DS is 11.5 yo, recently diagnosed. He was put on topamax and imitrex for migraines which are supposedly unrelated and are what sent us to the neurologist in the first place. Migraines continue, some tingling in hands and feet, which is likely the topamax. However, today he had a migraine (been on topamax just over three weeks). Once it wore off I took him to school.
Avatar m tn I have been on Topamax for 5yrs and have had my left and right shoulders frozen in the past 2 years. I am in my late 40's and in good health and the ortho said this was very unusual. He said that some seizure meds may cause this and I knew that higher doses are taken for epilepsy. He said they had never looked into this. Also, I have recently had episodes of memory loss. I know that this is a side effect but will it go away if I go off of Topamax?
Avatar n tn Hello, Topamax can cause itching and erythematous rash in some individuals.Although the main side effects of topamax are slower reflexes, trouble thinking or concentrating, tiredness, poor coordination, and dizziness, yet it has shown itchy skin in some individuals. I feel that if you are showing any allergic reaction to topamax, pls stop taking it and consult your doctor for a change in prescription. You can take over the counter antihistaminic like benadryl or Claritin for itching.
Avatar n tn Most of the side effects are dose related. Here is more information about the medication: http://www.drugs.com/topamax.html . Sometimes, dividing the dose into several doses throughout the day may help. Also taking the smallest dose you can take is best to avoid the side effects. Initially, many people have side effects, but after your body gets used to the med. it goes away (usually after a week or 2).
1041303 tn?1421387341 Well I woke up from my nap and had to go to the store and had to come home immediately I felt as though I was going to pass out!!! I was so hot and dizzy!!!! Are these normal side effects???? I also had the numbness in my hands. I read about everything but the hot flashes! How long will these take to pass? I guess today I will take it at bedtime.
324184 tn?1308076203 Be very careful if taking topamax. Some side effects are not mentioned nor discussed in detail by your neurologist.Kidney stones hurt worse than childbirth witout any pain medication. I should know...I delivered one of my children without any pain medicaiton at all. Stones are 1,000 times worse. Be very, very careful.
Avatar n tn Topamax is used alone or in combination with other medications to prevent seizures in adults and children who are at least 2 years old. Topamax is also used to prevent migraine headaches. It will only prevent migraine headaches or reduce the number of attacks. It will not treat a headache that has already begun. Topamax may also be used for other purposes not listed in this medication guide.
424862 tn?1203803456 Thanks for your reply, I am yet to start on Topamax, but this is what the neuro has prescribed for me. I was really wanting to find out as much as I can about it before I actually start taking it. My husband and I had planned on 'seeing what happened' when I came off the pill late summer '07. I then got really unwell again (this is 4th time I have been floored for months on end...) and so am not sure what to do now. I have since been back on the pill until I find out my options.
Avatar f tn This drug is used to treat epilepsy in both children and adults. In many cases it can also be used as an antidepressant. In children it is also indicated for treatment of Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (a disorder that causes seizures and developmental delay). It is also Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved for, and now most frequently prescribed for, the prevention of migraines.
Avatar m tn http://www.rxlist.com/topamax-drug.htm). Diet modification and supplementation is a good alternative in decreasing the dosage and the associated side effects of certain medicatons such as topamax. Take care and best regards.
Avatar f tn I also take Topiramate (Topamax). Your side-effects are very similar to what I experienced when I started the medication. But, as Selma wrote, there is an adjustment period. It took me two or three weeks to adjust and things got better. When my Neuro increased the dosage the side effects did not seem to be as drastic. Now, three years on the med, I have very few side effects. Those that I do experience are tolerable in comparison to the migraine.
1276940 tn?1564515084 t try Topamax before but what I know is numbness and tingling are some of Topamax side effects. It become less with time. Are numbness and tingling really bad? or u can handle it? Do you have any other side effects? How long to use it? Is Topamax useful as mood stabilizer and good for weight loss according to your experience?
Avatar m tn After much research it seems my only options are do nothing or surgery. My Neurologist has had me try topamax in the past but the side effects were horrifying. She now wants me to try Diamox. Any relief with this drug?? I am so afraid of taking any other drugs after the topamax. Side effects or any info would be much appreciated. I will meet with a NS next week to discuss the surgery. I fear the surgery will be too much for my family as I have 2 young children.
Avatar f tn I have a lot of co-workers at a call center who have also tried topamax but say its not usefull and hated the side effects so they stopped.

Avatar f tn I am only 17, i went to the neurologist and he suggested topamax, i have not had a single headache since! Topamax is wonderful and has no side effects that could effect younger people such as myself or your daughter. I would highly reccomend asking your doctor about starting this medication asap!!!
2035835 tn?1336300786 Mine did, and now I can only feel it a tiny bit if my feet are in the same position for a long time (i.e. computer chair rail). It definitely has a side effect of weight loss. In fact, some doctors prescribe it specifically for that reason. (In people who are overweight, and don't suffer from migraine.) I lost weight almost immediately.
Avatar n tn When I took topamax I had the same side effect, it gets worse in the winter with the cold weather. What I found out is that topamax depletes the potassium in your body, If you like bananas eat one a day and if you are like me you can get an otc potassium you just need 1-2 a day and I would take them depending on how my hands and feet felt. It is better to just eat a banana unstead of taking supplements but otc potassium is inexpensive.
Avatar m tn )I was only on it for 10 days, but had terrible side effects. Since stopping the MEDs. the side effects are crazy! I feel all of this anxiety and I cannot sleep, I have bizarre thoughts and zero appetite. This has been going on since I stopped 2 days ago. Anyone else experience this and more importantly how many days til I feel better???
Avatar m tn I was recently put on topamax not 4 weight loss but i was told a side effect is weight loss(personally i am against taking diet pills for myself) i was wondering if anyone has any knowledge or xperience with this med?
Avatar f tn m feeling much better...not great....but headed in the right direction. No big side effects from the Topamax other than weight loss and some cognitive effects....but I'm kinda already "lost" from the TBI (can't remember things, foggy headed, can't think of the right "word"...lots of times I can't say what I want toi say). So, I don't know if these are side effectys of the Topamax or not. For me...it's been worth it. The pain was so bad.
Avatar f tn Has anyone had success with Topamax for neuropathic pain? Thanks in advance...
Avatar f tn I started low on 25mg and ended up on 2 x 50mg daily. The early side effects do go away. I had tingling in my hands and feet and I did still get some nasty headaches (no longer migraines) in the initial stages. The cognitive side effects also went away after a couple of months. After about 3 months on Topamax and getting to my maximum dose, I was getting minor headaches and virtually no side effects.
