I'm back with another question :-). DS is 11.5 yo, recently diagnosed. He was put on topamax and imitrex for migraines which are supposedly unrelated and are what sent us to the neurologist in the first place. Topomax has some common & uncommon side effects, and stomach pain & back pain fall into the uncommon, but the burning urination is a little concerning. What leads you to believe it could be appendicitis, and not something like a UTI, or bladder infection? Just curious. I was back in the hospital a few months after first being prescribed this, along with seroquel and ativan for panic and anxiety. That's not what makes this medicine so undesirable though. With each dose increase, I had numbness in my legs and arms. This could continue for as long as 2 weeks after a dose increase.

I also take Topiramate (Topamax). Your side-effects are very similar to what I experienced when I started the medication. But, as Selma wrote, there is an adjustment period. It took me two or three weeks to adjust and things got better. When my Neuro increased the dosage the side effects did not seem to be as drastic. I am convinced it is from the Topamax since I have been on strong cold meds from the doctor for 2 weeks, I am giving it another few days and may go down to 75 mgs by cutting one of my 50 mg pills in half...can't afford to go see my psychiatrist again to get his advice so I m really self medicating right now.

My body adjusted to the side effects over time. But what it also did was prevent my body from sweating, and I still feel cold all the time. Also side effects from the medications. Topamax did nothing for my pain and I was one of the few people who had one of the more bizarre side effects. I first noticed my hands and feet going numb. With the next increase my face went numb and my tongue felt like a block of dried wood. It can also interfere with taste in some people.

The cognitive side effects also went away after a couple of months. After about 3 months on Topamax and getting to my maximum dose, I was getting minor headaches and virtually no side effects. The best thing about Topamax as opposed to other migraine drugs is that it doesn't make you gain weight. Topamax gave me my life back.
