Avatar f tn They just tell us what we already know. They have prescribed just 1 hour of speech therapy weekly for him. Both I and my husband are working very hard but with very slow success. Any help greatly appreciated.
333021 tn?1207759633 ) I started speech therapy for cognitive issues two wks ago . I have all the troubles everyone mentioned above . I also have great difficulty speaking concepts.. or what I'm thinking .. also understanding what has just been said and what I'm looking at (this is the scariest for me) unnerving stuff this is Typing is much easier.. as most of these problems have to do with processing speed. This also affects my movements, walking ,stairs ( mostly going down)...etc.
293420 tn?1243142938 There are TONS of parents who post about their toddlers/children having speech and language issues, but they have to post on Parenting Toddlers 1-5. It would be great to have all of the posts in one place and be able to track one another's progress with their children and hear stories from other parents about their S/L impaired children. I'm an SLP and I would LOVE to have a forum for this. I'm surprised that there is not one already!
Avatar m tn The longer you wait the harder it will be for him to get control of his eating problem. Speech therapy to deal with his oral motor problems will make all the difference. Good luck.
Avatar m tn I went to my speech therapy this morning. She had me saying ahhhhhh, ooooh, eeeeh and reading from what looked like a grade second reader. The she made a mistake. She said, "Tell me a little about yourself." Now, being a complete windbag I went into a dissertation that rocked her back on her heels. She kept asking me to take a deep breath as i talked.
193609 tn?1292180293 She said that they do educational speech therapy and that Ashtyn needs Clinical speech therapy. Is there anything that would be as helpful as speech therapy since my insurance wont cover it and the ISD doesn't do the speech therapy that he needs? Ashtyn is very behind in almost all communication skills. I don't know what else to do for him, and no one can help him!
Avatar f tn He sometimes hits it so hard he bleeds or bruises I am very concerned about this. Ive heard that most toddlers hit themselves (which he also does), but I have never seen this. what can I do to stop this before he seriously hurts himself?
Avatar m tn My son did. Talk to his pediatrician about it. Speech therapists often deal with feeding problems when a child is young before speech issues become apparent. It is amazing all of the motor control that goes into eating and speaking. His motor planning and function may be off a bit. It is worth looking into as with easy therapy this can be greatly improved. My son chews like a champ now but not when it comes to meat.
Avatar n tn 3 words at age 2 is way behind in language and she would qualify for speech therapy at the least. There probably is a reason for her screaming and crying, but she can't communicate that reason to you. My daughter has tantrums really bad. I think if she could communicate why, she wouldn't have some of them. Or at least I could remedy what was wrong in some of the instances.
Avatar f tn MY SON IS 2 1/2 YEARS OLD, I AM VERY CONCERNED BECAUSE HE STILL IS NOT TALKING HE ONLY SAYS SEVERAL WORDS , WHEN HE WANTS. HE USUALLY JUST SCREAMS FOR WHAT HE WANTS OR POINTS EVERYTHING ELSE SEEMS NORMAL . I AM STARTING TO WORRY THAT THIS COULD BE ASSOCIATED WITH AUTISM OR ASPERGERS, HE TAKING SPEECH THERAPY ONCE A WEEK BUT IT DOES NOT SEEM TO BE ENOUGH HE'S AFFECTIONATE, LOVING DOES NOT HAVE ANY REPETITIVE RITUALS I DON'T SEE ANY OTHER AREAS FOR CONCERN.
Avatar f tn speech delays don't necessarily mean autism. They can mean hearing loss, verbal apraxia, language processing disorders, and probably a whole lot of other things a speech pathologist could diagnose/figure out. My sister was about 3 1/2 when she started speech therapy (she's an adult now). I guess back then, they didn't do early intervention before about 3 or 4, like they do nowadays in the Birth to 3 programs. But, anyways, figuring out if there are issues would be a good step.
480331 tn?1310403529 t babble at all just sat and watched everything and everyone, until the age of 2 and half then her first word was gog, dog at 2 and half, she had not speech therapy as i believed my partner that she had brothers and sisters talking for her, she is now 6 and still quite lazy in her speech and she is also behind in her school work.
Avatar f tn t have my baby yet (fingers crossed for tomorrow) but on the news last night this subject came up saying a lot of toddlers need speech therapy now. Maybe see if you can take him to a local speech therapist for some guidance apparently it helps wonderfully.
Avatar n tn He certainly can read and seems to understand what he is reading. Due to insurance related issues, his therapy ended prematurely.. I would like to be able to communicate with him better. Can you suggests games, tools to help. I gave him a computer to see if he could type his messages but he could not. Are there other tools I can use? please help.
Avatar n tn Hm. Well, a speech delay can be very frustrating for sure. It can interfere with all kinds of things in a child's life from peer interaction to how a child expresses emotions to self esteem. Good for the parents for recognizing that getting help with speech is important and having her in speech classes. I'd practice all the things she does in speech therapy at home as well.
Avatar m tn he is progressing a little,he know to clap his hands, jumping.i hav seen the doctor and the doctor send me to the speech therapy...so the treatment is going on,he is making 4 words...and the teacher is working with him alone and told me to come to school...October i hav an appointment with the speech therapy and the teacher then they will decide wat to do...sometimes he reply wen u ask him a question n sometime he just repeats the questions....
Avatar f tn Hi, congratulations on adopting a child!! That's awesome. As far as gestation, you probably know that 39 weeks is considered full term. More important would be his birth weight. What was that? Being an infant born to a drug addicted mother makes delays more common and you are smart to watch for these. Early intervention can solve lots of problems. Your child also sounds like he is doing pretty well.
Avatar f tn Play lots of games with him. Like listening to the sounds. Or following instructions like 'Simon says'. Speech therapists for children essentially just use games as a way to develop speech.
Avatar m tn The ways to detect autism earlier are increasing. I definitely agree the earlier the better. Even if you don't have a diagnosis you can start getting her speech therapy. My daughter had been in therapy for a couple years before we were able to get her autism diagnosis.
Avatar f tn He is going to start Physical therapy, ocupacional, and speech therapy. I hope this will help him. But do you think he has autism. We are going to see a neurologist on July I hope for that time he will improve a little bit.
Avatar n tn He also has a speech delay that was diagnosed about the age of two. He has speech therapy at school. He has been having problems at school this year with academics as well as behavior. His father, mother and I all feel that his behavior has gotten worse this past year.
Avatar f tn Then the kids need support when theyre older and dont have it. My advice always is to enjoy your child. If youre concerned about speech you can get free speech services from the state or privately through insurance. You can do ALOT yourself. The first step is always communicating needs. You can do this with body language or words/sounds. Place something he WANTS out of reach. Dont dangle it. Say the word or the movement you want and repeat this. It works phenomenally.
Avatar n tn It is good that you have been accessing services for your son and that you recognized early that he had delayed speech. A diagnosis of autism involves deficits in social interactions (no eye contact), delayed language and rigidity in routines or perseverative behaviors that are hard to interrupt.
Avatar f tn He should be receiving free speech therapy. I would definitely have him tested. Some of his behaviors reminds me of autism. I am just a mom. I hold no degress in this area. But, I would not enroll him in school at five but I would for sure demand the testing be done. Call your state board of education. You may have to put the request in writing. They then have 30 days to respond.
