Common Questions and Answers about Speech development games for toddlers

speech

Avatar f tn Hi I'm a worried parent, my 2 year 4 month old toddler hasn't spoken a word yet and doesn't appear to understand what I'm saying beyond, "no", "don't do that", "lets go", "go to bed", "go outside". She doesn't point, when she's looking for food, she leads me by the hand and takes me into the kitchen where she looks up at the press for food.
293420 tn?1243142938 There are TONS of parents who post about their toddlers/children having speech and language issues, but they have to post on Parenting Toddlers 1-5. It would be great to have all of the posts in one place and be able to track one another's progress with their children and hear stories from other parents about their S/L impaired children. I'm an SLP and I would LOVE to have a forum for this. I'm surprised that there is not one already!
Avatar n tn m not sure where your from so its probably called something different but there should be programs where you are that helps with children speech development they came to your house they will observe your child and then set up appointments depending on how much and what kind of help she needs they come to your home for the appointments so the child is comfortable there is usually no charge depending on your insurance and they will be able to tell you if she needs testing for autism and where you
Avatar n tn It is good that you have been accessing services for your son and that you recognized early that he had delayed speech. A diagnosis of autism involves deficits in social interactions (no eye contact), delayed language and rigidity in routines or perseverative behaviors that are hard to interrupt.
Avatar f tn He has been seen by a child development doctor. He has had one session of speech therapy, another in a couple of weeks. He has got an appointment with an occupational therapist next week. I received a copy of the letter addressed to my doctor with a report from when I saw the Child development doctor that said he has mild Hypotonia??? My question is does anyone have a child like mine who has or had similar development delays and what was the outcome.
Avatar f tn Believe is or not, it is quite normal for toddlers to bang their head when frustrated or tired. My daughter did the same. I would just tell her over and over to not bang her head against the wall because she would hurt herself. I was beginning to wonder if she even felt pain and my uncle asked me the question also. Eventually, it stopped. I just tried to redirect her. Get him interested in something else.
Avatar n tn If you are concerned about this, discuss it with your pediatrician and perhaps they will refer you to a speech pathologist for a speech evaluation. The best thing that seemed to work with my two boys is that I would speak slowly and have them look at my mouth on words they had difficulty with. I'd also do games like put on music and make crazy, silly faces and freeze them (turning music on and off). That works mouth and face muscles.
Avatar m tn Hi. I think it can be really hard on a little guy to go back and forth between two homes. Some of what you are seeing may be due to that. It is really hard to have one place you are at MOST of the time and then go to another place. Hopefully you have a good relationship with his mother.
796187 tn?1330004851 she just started talking in her jibber jabber, but is know of in our family for the babys, toddlers to do this type of jibber jabber talk so I thought nothing about it. Then the Pediatrician ask her "What color is your Shirt?" her reply was "color" so from that the Pediatrician recomened me to get a preschool Speech Evaluation, in which we are scheduled for in Feb.
Avatar f tn If his receptive language is slow, then directins would be hard for him. As his speech is developing, pay attention to the areas of speech -------- receptive, expressive and articulation. Even a slight issue can cause things to be harder for him. I'd try to remain patient. As he does get closer to two, it is natural to test boundaries and authority and to try to gain independence.
342647 tn?1291107933 That is normal and it actually sounds like your baby might be advanced in the speech department! Just keep speaking clearly and talking a lot to them and they'll pick it all up. Your pediatrician will start assessing speech development during visits. At least they SHOULD. You might notice, as they do the exam, the doctor will ask your child questions like, "What's your favorite food? Do you have a special toy?" to coax them into talking to see how well they speak.
Avatar n tn s syndrome, and can be considered if the child shows the above characteristics but has had normal language development. For the record, children with Aspergers do frequently have average or above average intelligence and may use "pedantic" or very formal, adultlike speech. That doesn't mean I think your little guy has Asperger's syndrome, but it doesn't sound like Autism if his language is so advanced.
Avatar n tn We have recently been given our 21/2 y/o grandson by Div of Family Serv. after they removed him from the home due to finding meth within his reach. I'm not sure what drugs or how much the mother did while pregnant but am told meth, zanax, marijuana, and opiates were used extensively especially during the first 4-5 months of her pregnancy. His development appears to be on target for now except for a mild expressive speech delay.
Avatar f tn My seven year old son had speech delay. He is in Ist grade and going for speech therepy in school . He had beads stuck in her both ears for almost 2.5 years, my poor baby,we were ignorant. Now also when we or my friends ask him some thing, he says "what" at least 2-3 times. When I asked why we have to repeat question, he said " he doesn't understand what we asaked". We didn't do any tests. We are bilingual family but speak only english with him.
Avatar f tn The educators from the Child Development Center my son goes to (he's 3 years old), suggested I sign him up for Speech Therapy at the local elementary school because his speech is delayed. Apparently, by law, the school has to enroll him for this problem. I don't know if this law is state wide or national, but you may look into a Speech Therapy program at your local Elementary school as well.
Avatar n tn I have a 4 year old daughter and I'm worried that she may have a development problem. She can't focus on one thing for more than a couple of minute and she can't answer a question when asked. Anytime that any adult asks her somthing she only says off the wall things. She has also started being really rude to people but never me. I am worried that I need to get her tested before it gets worse.
Avatar n tn In several areas of his development (speech/language, impulse control, social) he is not keeping pace with what would be expected of his age. It would be wise to arrange a developmenatl evaluation. If you live in an area where you have access to a pediatric hospital, particularly a so-called teaching hospital, this should not be difficult to arrange.
Avatar m tn My daughter just turned 3 a few weeks ago. While she typically talks in 4-5 word sentences and displays an average vocabulary, I think she is struggling with some comprehension issues. If asked a question she doesn't know the answer to, she will automatically answer yes as opposed to thinking about it or responding with ''I don't know.'' I think she knows she's supposed to have an answer, but doesn't know what to do when she doesn't get what you are saying.
Avatar m tn My 2.3 year old daughter has no speech and doesn't follow my instructions. She speaks words which are meaningless for her like tatatata, papapa, kakaka. Earlier she used to wave her hand when said bye and clap her hands when asked to clap but now she doesn't. She flaps her hand when excited. She has good eye contact with known persons and very bad with unknown. She loves looking at other toddlers but donot play with them.
470885 tn?1326329037 You know, my oldest can sit still for something like that. But my second daughter can NOT sit still and she doesn't have autism or ADD or anything of that nature. She's just a very physical child who likes to move and dance. I think they were just being cautious. Did the centre even end up discussing their findings with your child's speech issues? It does sound like he's not where he should be for his age, but he is progressing (which is good).
Avatar f tn Play lots of games with him. Like listening to the sounds. Or following instructions like 'Simon says'. Speech therapists for children essentially just use games as a way to develop speech.
