I'm genotype 1b and on triple tx (24 wks). I finished the incivek and have 10 wks left of ribavirin and peg interferon. I'm still at full 180 mcg peg interferon but down to 400 mg ribavirin. I'm on procrit now so hoping to go up in ribavirin next week. Doctor feels 600 mg should be okay for me. She said because I'm anemic, it shows that I'm at a good level of ribavirin, although I wish it were more. Hopefully next week I can go back up.

A study of nearly 2,000 patients showed that adding ribavirin to the combination of ledipasvir and sofosbuvir had no benefit in treating hepatitis C.
Patients taking ribavirin along with the combination were more likely to have adverse side effects to the treatment.

I have finished with Incivek, thank God. I've had my ribavirin reduced to 200 mg a day and will do my 18th peg shot on Friday. The ribavirin was reduced due to my rash. Unfortunately the rash is everywhere again. I have atarax, doxepin and clobitisol. These give minimal relief. Now my hair is just falling out like crazy. To be honest i think i could deal with all of this except the hair thing.
If they are available then it would be important to discuss treating with the triple medication regimen with your doctor. The cure rate is much higher with the triple medication regimen (Interferon, Ribavirin, and protease inhibitor) than it is with just Interferon and Ribavirin,

The Standard of Care for hep C is interferon and Ribavirin, so almost everybody who is treating is on that in some form or the other. The shot is the interferon and the pills are the ribavirin.
You are very lucky to have so few side effects, even though hair loss is the pitts... at least it comes back afterwards, and you are about half way through treatment if your're doing 48 weeks.

What genotype are you? Sounds like you are GT 1. If so, the current recommended treatment is sovaldi/interferon/ribavirin for 12 weeks.
However, in October the FDA is expected to approve a new treatment for GT 1's. It's a one pill treatment - no interferon. Ribavirin can be added or not.
The combo pill is Sovaldi/Ledipasvir.

Researchers also found that in the third of study participants whose ribavirin dosage was reduced as a result of anemia, cure rates actually improved to as high as 52 percent, whereas in those whose ribavirin dose stayed the same, cure rates were lower, at 37 percent.

If he is on triple tx, with Incivek for the first 12 weeks, he will actually be forced to eat a very high fat diet during that stage (20 mg of fat within 30 minutes prior to pill), as that medication is carried and absorbed via fat. Other than that one drug there are no real dietary restrictions except eating enough and including some fats for better absorption of the ribavirin. Most people lose their appetite and lose some weight while on interferon and ribavirin.

Interferon and Ribavirin would be considered specialty drugs and depending on the provider once you reach catastrophic coverage you will pay around 5% of the cost of a specialty drug and will stay at that payment stage until the end of the calender year. I can't recall exactly what the monthly cost of treatment drugs are but I know it's very expensive and that's without adding Neupogen or Epogen to the mix.
In addition, Ribavirin has a multiple dose half-life of 12 days, and it may persist in non-plasma compartments for as long as 6 months. Therefore, Ribavirin, including Ribavirin tablets, is contraindicated in women who are pregnant and in the male partners of women who are pregnant. Extreme care must be taken to avoid pregnancy during therapy and for 6 months after completion of therapy in both female patients and in female partners of male patients who are taking Ribavirin therapy.

How long that ribavirin stay's in my system after doctor tells me my bloodwork came out good and i can get of that medizin.
