Avatar m tn I would like to know if vaccinations can be given to a dog if they have early signs of distemper? Just happened to be reading info on canine distemper and my 7 yr old dog might have distemper, will be taking her to vet tomorrow and am wondering if they will vaccinate her if she has or is getting distemper. Would appreciate a comment, thank you!
Avatar f tn Mailee, if your kitty is an *outdoor*, then yes, you should be having him/her vaccinated against Distemper. The 'P' is what stands for "Distemper" in the FVRCP vaccination which your vet should be giving annually.
82861 tn?1333453911 We spoke to a wildlife rehabber who said distemper is running rampant throughout the coon population in East and Southeast Texas this Spring. This particular racoon was in end-stange distemper and was having seizures about every 10 minutes. Saddest thing we've ever seen. Dave hates to kill anything, but I'm so glad he put that poor animal out of its misery. I left the house yesterday morning and noticed a racoon sitting on a neighbor's driveway.
Avatar n tn Her puppy had a life-threatening reaction to her distemper vaccine at 5 mos. old. She is improving but still has trouble walking and takes steroids daily. Is my puppy in any way at risk of getting the "distemper" symptoms by playing, nipping and sharing water/food bowls with the other puppy?? Is a reaction to a vaccination contagious???
Avatar n tn I have a lab/sheppard female puppy (8 weeks old) who had distemper but now is shakey on her feet and twitches a lot. There were 12 in the litter and the rest died. She is the sole survivor. Most of the others died over 3 weeks ago. She sleeps more than usual, but has an appetite and plays well. When she walks, she walks a bit crooked (like she is drunk) but she has a twitch in her eye and front paw that twitches all the time. When she is in a deep sleep, it seems to almost disapear.
Avatar m tn my chihuhua just got her distemper shot 3 hrs ago and now she is shaking and not doing well what is happening
Avatar n tn Hi everyone. We are at a loss of what to do and would love advice/guidance. We are a family of 4 with 2 boys ages 8 and 11. We lost our senior dog about 1 month ago and decided to adopt a new dog. We adopted a shepherd/lab mix on December 6th from a rescue organization. Female, 8 months old. She had been in a county shelter for 1 month before.
Avatar n tn We took him to the vet and he received an x-ray which showed cloudy lungs. I feared(and still do) that it could be Distemper, so we went to another vet to get a swab test. The test was negative but I have come to understand that Distemper can not show up sometimes and that eventually 80% of the pups can die from the Pneumonia before any signs of Distemper show up.
Avatar n tn A vaccine for Distemper? Yes there is, puppies should receive their puppy shots, which usually gives protection against Distemper among other illnesses. or older dogs maybe older than 5, it's wise to ask the vet to run "Titer Testing" instead of just giving them their booster innoculations without question every year. Over-vaccinating can lead to problems when they get older.
641243 tn?1235752084 We've got a 4 month old sweet foster girl who came to us from the shelter with all of her vaccines, pretty thin and with a slightly sniffly nose. Her first few days with us showed her to be a tad mellower than her two perky sisters, and she was a picky eater. Everything else was normal. Since then she's lost her appetite completely, but nothing else has really changed.
Avatar m tn Vet has taken tests waiting for results. May have Distemper. She had her first shots 2 weeks ago. Not sure if that is a false positive for Distemper. Getting very concerned for her. Any ideas??
663774 tn?1297225152 Since her vaccine history is unknown, she should be vaccinated to keep herself protected as well as protecting your family. First, she should receive an initial feline distemper vaccine (FVR-CP) followed by a booster in about 3 weeks. She should also receive a Rabies vaccine with a booster in 1 yr. I would also recommend that she be tested for Feline Leukemia and Feline AIDS.

A dog breeder euthanized more than a thousand dogs at his kennel in Kansas after an outbreak of a lethal virus was traced to his breeding operation.
Avatar f tn I have a dog that just recovered from canine distemper. He's doing fine but the virus left him blind, unfortunately. He eats really well and gets excited when he smells the food. The problem is i can't get him to drink. When he started not to drink i searched about the problem and tried a few things. I put some chicken stock in the water so he smelled it and began to drink. However lately he's refusing again to drink.
Avatar f tn Other yearly vaccines include distemper combination, Lyme vaccine, lepto vaccine and others depending on your location. These are boosted yearly after the first year. Distemper vaccine requires 2 to 3 vaccines prior to the first year, Lyme and Lepto require two. Some vets preform vaccine titers after year 2 instead of just giving the vaccine. If the titers are adequate the booster vaccine does not have to be given for that year.
Avatar f tn The most important one is the Distemper/Parvo, [DHPP]. That is a set of 3 every 4 - 6 weeks and then yearly after the last booster. The rabies shot can't be given until 20 weeks I believe. And depending on where you live its either yearly or every 3 years. There is also a Coronavirus and Kennel Cough one, but unless you plan on having your dog stay at a dog hotel while you are away, those usually aren't as important. If money is tight, those can wait.
Avatar f tn The two viral diseases in dogs that are known to cause meningitis are distemper and parvovirus, with distemper being much more likely to be the culprit in viral meningitis. Bacterial infections that can lead to meningitis include staphylococcal infections, pasteurellosis and sometimes other bacteria. It takes being on antibiotics for a good while to fight the infection. It is hard for the antibiotics to pass the blood-brain barrier.
Avatar n tn The unofficial diagnosis is distemper from my regular vet. The emergency vet tends to think it was a liver shunt issue. Have you ever heard of anything like this? He didn't have any distemper signs at all -- runny nose, diarehhea, eye issues? He actually went on a mile walk/run with me at 7 pm that night! Everything seemed completely normal. I am at a total loss as to what happened?
Avatar f tn We just got her and her previous owner said she was up to date on all her shots.
Avatar f tn He then began trembling and yelping when we touched his stomach area. The first vet said kennel cough, the second distemper and the third thinks distemper unlikely and it's something else, as now his stomach and the area around his spine are swollen. A stomach scan and blood tests have revealed nothing and the vets have claimed they've never seen anything like it. They're going to continue tests, but has anyone on here had a similar issue that could shed some light?
Avatar f tn However, 3 weeks ago he started to have diarrhea with blood and coughing badly so we tested him and found out he has the distemper virus. So we started right away with antibiotics and feeding him with tubes as he started to completely refuse to eat. His symptoms were going away and he didn't cough anymore or have discharges from his nose and eyes but unfortunately he had a seizure.

1096512 tn?1384889778 Usually the parvo vaccination is given in a combo-type vaccine with distemper, adenovirus (canine hepatitis), and parainfluenza. Sometimes other vaccines are included in the combo. So, your puppy may have been given other vaccinations already, in addition to parvo. You need to find out. When you were at the vet's office, you should have been given a vaccination schedule for your puppy, with instructions on when to come back. I would find it very curious if you were not given that.
