Propranolol vs atenolol

Common Questions and Answers about Propranolol vs atenolol

inderal

Avatar n tn Propranolol and metoprolol are fairly able to do so, but Atenolol is, as far as I know, not. Which means, propranolol and metoprolol can provide more cognitive side effects (forgetfullness, confusion, mood disturbances, etc.) than Atenolol. Which unfortunately means that beta blockers aren't necessarily fun meds even though all of them end with -lol :) On the other hand, some beta blockers that are able to cross the blood-brain barrier may have an anxiolytic effect.
Avatar n tn If it ends in "olol", it is a BB. There is metoprolol, propranolol, atenolol, labetalol... There are many. That is, of course, just the generic name.

Avatar m tn I don't think atenolol can usually cause memory loss. It is less lipophilic than propranolol and is excreted by the kidneys besides.
29837 tn?1414534648 The effects of different types of adrenoreceptor blocking agents on portal venous pressure were studied in patients with cirrhosis and portal hypertension. Oral atenolol (selective beta 1 blocker), propranolol (non-selective beta 1 and beta 2 blocker), and prazosin (alpha blocker) were compared in three groups of eight patients. Haemodynamic measurements were made before and after two or three and eight weeks of therapy.
Avatar m tn I was able to take a LOT of propranolol without affecting my bp too much. Coreg makes for a little more hypotension. Metoprolol, not too bad. Labetalol, one pill and I'm dizzy... but it does cut my rate down. To get into the meds that affect rhythm without disturbing bp too much, you get into the antiarrhythymics and the drugs get scarier for your rhythms. So...
Avatar n tn Hello, Yes it is true that there have been many new drugs after atenolol but atenolol is still prescribed by many doctors as antihypertensives. Newer drugs belonging to the category of beta blockers have come up and these include betaxolol, carvedilol, propranolol, timolol and labetalol. It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations and the answer is based on the medical information provided.
Avatar n tn However I was unable to cope with the number of these, and have been taking a small dose of atenolol daily since (12.5mg, one tablet cut in half). I'm now 6 weeks pregnant, and tried to stop taking them but couldn't. When I did, I was horribly anxious and couldn't cope. I also experienced sleeplessness, tachycardia and the sensation of feeling my hearbeat all the time. I was in constant tears and couldn't work or do anything at all.
Avatar n tn I have been on Methimazole 10mg 3x a day for four weeks and was on propranolol for the first two weeks. I am off the propranolol. After three wks I am now taking methimazole 2x a day. Since the on set of this illness I have had achy/painful gums which seem to get more severe with each episode. I have seen my Dr., dentist and a periodontist. Tylenol helps. No one can find a cause for this pain.
Avatar m tn So I was put on amlodipine 10mg and Propranolol 40mg on 1st July 2016. This helped lower my blood pressure to around 115/68. Only problem is that it makes me feel quite tired after little activity like walking. After complaining about this tiredness to the doctor yesterday, he changed my drugs to 100mg Losartan (1 tablet per day) and 25mg Atenolol (2 tablets per day).
Avatar m tn so i have been taking 5 mg of atenolol daily for fast heart rate and now i found out i have vitamin d defficiency.... i have always had vit d defficiency and used to treat it with taking 50000 iu weekly.... now my concern is can i take vit d in high amount with atenolol????
Avatar m tn My heart rate remains a little high and i want to take propranolol in a very small dose like 8 mg a day in divoded doses. I am scared that my bp would lower and cause probs. Can i take it???
Avatar f tn I'm presently on atenolol 40 mg (along with hydrochlorothiazide) once daily. I will be transitioning to propanolol 20 mg (and hydrochlorothiazide) twice daily soon - my doctor wants me to transition by taking propanolol - 1/2 of 20 mg twice a day for one week and then the full 20 mg twice daily. Why? Won't that cause rebound hypertension? Thanks.
1260320 tn?1270394906 I have tried numerous - norvasc, coversyl, enalapril, atenolol, diovan, propranolol n god knows what else. Out of all these, I have actually found one that suits me - nif-ten (a combination of nifedipine & atenolol). Unfortunately, it has a side effect of causing gum disease/periodontal. I am looking out for other meds to replace this.
Avatar f tn How long does withdrawal from beta blockers usually last? I don't have any money to refill my propranolol prescription and haven't had it in 4 months. I was taking it for arrhythmias and high BP (160mg XR propranolol with 180mg XR diltiazam daily) and when I ran out 4 months ago I just kept taking the Dilt. hoping the symptoms were just withdrawals and that they would go away... Symptoms are what you would think, I'm just curious if to someone with similar conditions (i.
Avatar n tn Follow your doc recommendations. but, I imagine you don't have to because you are only switching from one beta-blocker to another. So, you are essentially not lifting the beta-blockade.

1243620 tn?1274790697 Does anyone take propranolol for anxiety and panic attacks? I've had crippling anxiety for my whole life. Antidepressants increase it to the point where I'm in such a state I almost pass out from hypervenitlating. I've heard propranolol is good for this, and is effective.

2010625 tn?1329372056 There are still some options such as other anti-cholinergics (Artane, Akineton, Kemadrin) Benadryl if approved by a psychiatrist, Symmetryl and some beta blockers such as Inderal and Atenolol. You could ask your psychiatrist what would be the appropriate next step. Also keep track of when the motions speficically occur and if some motions respond to the side effect pill more than the others.
214529 tn?1333303619 told me I can increase if I need to, but it seems to me that this beta blocker makes me sleepy and depressed lowers my blood pressure and now I wonder if the slowing of the heart rate is not making my skips worse. Should I increase my atenolol, stop my atenolol or should I try Magnesium. I have heard alot of people say that Magnesium has helped them. If I do stop taking the atenolol I know you are not supposed to stop all together how should I wean myself off of it, again I take 25 mg a day...
