3 days later went to Infectious diseases Dr (had to wait as it was weekend), he swabbed the sore area, thought it looked 50/50 for herpes. Took blood and urine for other STDs. They all came back neg. Swab was also neg, but he said may have been too late for accurate test. He also did HSV antibody which came back positive.....I asked for which HSV, he said test did not distinguish between HSV 1 and HSV 2. Am confused, Dr says come back asap if another sore appears.
I have been 10 mg of prednisone for inflammation of pinched nerves in my lower back. I have been taking Valtrex for Type 1 herpes. My doctor did not tell me there was any complications or side effects of taking the two. I am on my 7 day, 5 more to go. I have not noticed any new signs on the area that has been effected. II am scheduled for back surgery in three weeks. Am I am extreme risks of anything?
Plus prednisone can cause or increase the amount you are refluxing. It normally didn't help my symptoms at all until the course was done because I have bad reflux. I would use this medication only as a last resort with a history of GERD.
The issue with prednisone is much more one for you than for him. If the person with herpes takes prednisone, that will suppress their immune response and make herpes outbreaks and shedding more likely. I would not think he is more at risk of getting herpes because of the prednisone, at least not such that you should stop having a relationship with him. Even if he did get it, it could be managed even if he was on prednisone.
His advice - continue to taper down and come in for a spinal tap next week. I asked about infection risk being on preds and he shrugged his shoulders. Not sure what to think of it. So I'm asking here. I've not been on them very long. Two medrol dose packs a couple of weeks ago and then last week started 40mg for 4 days then tapered to 30mg yesterday. I will be down to 10mg before the tap. Thoughts?
i can't seem to find an accurate source for my question -- what is the effect of prednisone on herpes? i got a high fever and tonsillitis the other day and was scared that it was the beginning of a herpes outbreak so i started valacyclovir (didn't tell my doctor, just did it -- i know, probably not a smart idea) and today my doctor prescribed me prednisone for my tonsillitis. i never did develop any symptoms of herpes, but what are the chances that the prednisone could cause an outbreak?
) this is an unrelated question to MS or even MM (multiple myeloma what i have) I am on prednisone for an asthma flair up. :( For the past month had increasing chest tightness, pain and just feeling breathless on stairs etc. Lung doc changed me to Adavair, and after a week I still felt more pain, tightness so I went to walk in. After consulting my asthma doc they decided to give me a course of steroids to nip the attack in the bud.
It is a little comforting to hear that this is highly unusual for herpes and I thank you for your timely response and help
I was placed on Amoxicillin 500mg and prednisone for inflammation. Two days later my sore throat and fever had subsided but I continued to have the white patches on my throat for another 10 days or so as well as the back of the throat being somewhat red. By this time the guilt had taken full control over me and I could not eat, drink, sleep, etc. Eight days after the encounter I had a day or two of more frequent urination but never any burning.
She is now having an outbreak of herpes (starting to get under control after 2 rounds of valtrex, back on acyclovir for 2 days) and a flare of Behcet's. prednisone will make the painful vaginal Behcet's lesions go away but will cause another outbreak of herpes. Does anyone have any suggestions? She's about to leave for a required college trip. Thanks.
Welcome to the forum. This was a low risk exposure for herpes. Condoms work reasonably well in protection for vaginal sex, and oral sex is safe sex -- even unprotected. I would judge your overall odds of catching genital herpes from this single sexual contact to be somewhere around 1 chance in 10,000. That's equivalent to having a similar sexual experience once daily for 27 years before herpes might be likely!
I don't think you have put yourself at risk for herpes infection,no. If anything taking prednisone woulld make a herpes outbreak way, way worse.
That doctor prescribed me prednisone and it seemed to work. I don't have herpes anywhere else on my body. If it weren't for the recurring aspect of the bumps, I would be sure my new doctor was wrong (considering the steroids seemed to work last time). The bumps really aren't painful. Just really, really itchy. Especially at night. I'm also unclear how I would have contracted this on my thigh?? Just wondering how likely is his diagnosis, and do I need a second opinion? Thank You for your time.
I recently met my partner and he informed me (prior to any intimacy) that he has herpes. He isn's sure if it's HSV-1 or HSV-2. I have Ulcerative Colitis. My symptoms are very well controlled and I am not on immunosuppressive therapy. I have had two moderately severe flare-ups in 18 years with a few moderate flare-ups. During moderate/sever flare-ups I took prednisone orally, in foam suppository as well as mesalamine orally and through suppository.
( I recommend seeing your provider for further evaluation as soon as you can instead at this point. The prednisone can cause genital herpes to flare up as well as cause you to be more prone to vaginal infections as well as skin infections. No need to worry about getting hsv1 back on your genital area - incredibly unlikely to happen.
About a week and a half ago, I had severe pain in my right arm and shoulder that progressed daily to almost unbearable for about four days and then herpes/shingles developed on back of arm at shoulder. I started on zovirax (my mom's medicine for fever blisters that I, coincidentally, have never had) early so it didn't develop as much as it would have but it looks like it would have covered my entire shoulder, shoulder blade and top outside half of right arm.
I know you have answered several questions on yeast or herpes but mine is a little different. I have been in a monogamous relationship for several years. We recently separated for a short time and I had sex with someone else. We used protection however the condom broke. Didn't notice at first so were probably unprotected for 2-5 minutes. About 2-3 days later, I noticed typical yeast infection symptoms (irritation and burning with some itching and a little discharge).
I was recently prescribed Acyclovir 400mg 3xday and have been taking it for about 5 days. Has anyone experienced similar symptoms from herpes, Peripheral Neuropathy? Any suggestions?
Hello, I have been diagnosed with herpes for about seven years now. I have hsv 1 and 2. In April of last year I had severe, sharp shooting pain in what I was told were my "sacral" joints and tenderness/soreness down through my left leg. This time, January 08 I have pain all along the left side of my spine, in my sacral joints and also in my neck. It feels the same and I am just wondering if the hsv could be the cause of this.
Over next few days pain got worse and penis and scrotum got very red. Went to doctor and got tested for everything (STD's inc, HIV, herpes) all negative. Pain got worse over 2-3 weeks and then eyes got very sore, irritated, red. Back to doc whose dx was Reiters and started indocin. Had no joint pain at this time. Penis pain and eye pain were pretty severe but resolved over 3 months but glans and scrotum remained red in color and small lesion on glans never completely went away.
However, she ordered a blood test and took two cultures, and then wrote me a prescription for Acyclovir (rather than the prednisone as she initially wanted to do) - I'm to take 3 pills a day for 10 days: this change of prescriptions has me a very nervous. I have not had a sexual partner (not even hand-holding) since December of 2011 and had my last exam (with a blood test and culture test - both negative for STDs) in April of 2012.
Does lupus make me susceptible to herpes? Do the following symptoms indicate a herpes attack? Several times a year I have these symptoms: Starts with sore throat on one side. The next day on the same side I have face pain around my eye, skin pain that goes up into my hairline and headache. I develop scratchy eye pain. The skin is so sensitive around my eye and hairline that it is very painful to touch. This lasts about a week, climaxing on about the 2nd day.
I tested positive for herpes zoster/chicken pox virus and think my immune system was crippled by too many steroids 3 weeks of 20-30 mg prednisone plus solumedrol injection once. do I have to worry that I have shingles again? can this disease be sexually transmitted or even through physical contact?
Grace, Thanks for your help and suggestions. I just received my 15 week test HSV 2 IgG from LabCorp. It was less than .91, or negative. I was prepared for a positive result as I continue to get anal rashes around my rectum on a regular basis (once every 1 1/2 for a few days, then it clears after 2-3 days). It begins by itching like crazy for 30 minutes then just lives as inflamed and annoying for 2-3 days. I know 15 weeks is a good indicator, but I'm wondering about it.
etc went to Ear NOSE and Throat Dr and he said I had Bell's Palsy which is caused by herpes. Gave me antifungal, prednisone and herpes medicine (forget the name)..There was nor have never been sores on my lips or mouth...Within 15 days all my paralysis was gone...the only thing that remained and still does is the mild burning tongue which comes more than goes...
Have you been around young children? That's a common source both for herpes and for other severe kinds of viral pharyngitis. and by the way, another possibility here -- in fact, perhaps the best bet -- is that you have a garden variety viral pharyngitis, plus recurrent oral herpes of the face. There is a reason oral herpes is often called "fever blisters" or "cold sores": infections like this trigger outbreaks.
) does your obgyn know you are taking prednisone for itching? herpes won't cause hives but prednisone can cause herpes to be more active. If I had that many children, my girlie parts would develop cobwebs as well as have a KEEP OUT sign on it....he he he Love my children with all my heart and soul but 2 was enough.....lol.
Yesterday, I went to the doctor and at first glance, he suspected that my rash is caused by the herpes virus (in the same way that people develop shingles) since my skin is also blistering where the rash is. But he also said that the rash should only appear on one side of my body since it only runs through one nerve and should not pass the midline.
until three days ago when i woke up with the same little red papules on MY MOUTH!!!! i thought for sure i had contracted herpes. they oozed and spread to all four corners of my lips. i remembered the ACV (apple cider vinegar) treatment for shingles and applied a compress of vinegar to my mouth. BOY DID I MAKE A MISTAKE!!! it seemed to multiply, ooze and swell times ten. after research i learned that herpes thrives in a warm acidic environment.
