Avatar n tn Metformin has been shown to help some, but not all, people lose weight. But, it is not a consistent weight loss medication. However it does have other benefits for women with PCOS, including improving the likelihood of spontaneous ovulation, or making women who need clomid to help them ovulate more sensitive to clomid. Are your periods regular? What are your goals - weight loss? Pregnancy? If weight loss, a nutritionist might be helpful.
Avatar f tn Hi, it depends on the treatment I guess, but I don't think you should expect any weight gain. Metformin will help with weight loss - I don't have any weight to shed, but Met really helps with appetite and maintainance. I also find Yasmin (BCP) harmless in this respect: I gain weight very easily usually and struggle to maintain it off, but Yasmin never caused any problems in this respect, I'd say on the contrary.
Avatar f tn I never ever gained weight. I think what triggered the weight gain for me was stress. I believe I have always had pcos since I wouldn't get a period for several months. But, I think what made the side effects so bad was the sudden stress. Now I am about 195lbs and I can't seem to shake the weight and it has been very very difficult for us to get pregnant.
706214 tn?1244523049 If you are overweight even moderate weight loss and exercise will improve the symptoms of PCOS . because weigth gain makes the hormonal imbalance worse. although i hate medicines and their side effects metformin may help with weight loss aswell .
Avatar f tn I would like to try it because I heard it helps women with PCOS lose weight. I need to lose weight and being on Provera and Clomid has made me gain weight the last 2 months. I have been eating right too but I am not losing anything! Grrrr Did you doc what to try you on Provera or Clomid??????
Avatar f tn 1, but if there is a difference then it is PCOS. Women with PCOS usually have a hard time looseing weight, and many say that the AF stop coming, instead of every 28 days..AF comes after 40+ days, or Prolong periods. Not all women with PCOS are overweight, but they say that women who are overweight have a higher chance of having this hormonal imbalence then women who are normal weight. But I have PCOS. I had gastric bypass surgery in 2007 lost about 275 pounds, and my AF came like clockwork.
Avatar n tn I did a diet of low carbs and sugar, took vitex (chaste tree berry) and exercised. Weight lifting is a GREAT way to help lose weight if you have pcos. Also, my dr put me on a pill to induce my period (the idea being that inducing your period will trick your body into ovulating). I am 40w1d with my second boy!
Avatar m tn i have all the symptons the majorrr weight gain, excess hair growth, acne, and thinning hair. Will metformin help all my symptoms?
1447404 tn?1284604228 Birth control can sometimes cause weight gain...but not every woman is the same. I never had weight gain with Yasmin. Sleepiness is not a side affect of metformin. And also, not every woman who has PCOS has diabetes. As far has the birth control, it did lighten my period and made it shorter as well. I never had breakthrough bleeding with it. My body reacts to medications very well...I've never had any bad side affects from anything I took.
Avatar f tn Because our bodies have more trouble breaking down food such as carbs and sugars, it causes us to gain more weight. Are you taking any medication right now? Metformin is generally given to us with PCOS. It's meant for diabetes, but for us who have PCOS it helps with our bodies and insulin.
Avatar f tn That is what happened to me. I had a weight gain but then the weight just dropped. Hang in there. I am sure you will see results very soon.
788806 tn?1250535391 Hi, i recently started taking metformin 500 twice a day for my PCOS, i heard great things about it. Avatar f tn Well i got diagnosed with PCOS when i was 17 sadly not in time to catch all the symptoms ive got , but birth control does help and if it has caused major weight gain get your sugar levels tested as you might have to take metformin to balance things out a bit.
Avatar f tn hello, some of have different symptoms but with me i had high blood pressure, weight gain around my mid section, no periods, wasnt ovulating, facial hair.
358971 tn?1330888975 My doctor told me that it is possible to conceive 2 months into using Metformin. Also, more women lose weight with Metformin than gain it because it controls the hormones that are causing the weight gain, therefore with exercise, you're able to lose. I've been using Metformin for 1.5 weeks and I've started losing a couple pounds. Anyway, here's a COOL website to go to: www. soulcysters. net (I put spaces after the '.
Avatar n tn ve had this since starting my period at almost 14 as my weight gain and trouble losing weight started then along with horrid acne I had to have a prescription for and my cycles were never regular. However doctors kept telling me nothing was wrong, it was just puberty and when I got older I was just told I ate too much (I didn't) and that some people just have irregular cycles. My doctor put me on Metformin 500 mg twice a day then upped it to 850 mg twice a day.
Avatar f tn I was diagnosed with PCOS in August of 2010 and was put on Metformin, one pill a day to help regulate my menstrual. I have been very active and lost 100 lbs before being diagnosed, and so exercise and eating healthy are not a new thing to me. I exercise 6 days a week, and since being on Meformin. The medication is working with one problem, but I'm not sure why it isn't helping in the other area of weight. I heard that people loose weight with Metformin! So I'm stuck as what to do??
1262373 tn?1281543782 I think the control of the horomones in the IUD was good for my body, but IDK how to deal with the weight gain. Through e-mail the doc suggested metformin and we will discuss this on tuesday. Any thoughts??
Avatar n tn I have switched doctors (not by choice) and the new doc had me stop taking metformin once i became pregnant. I am beginning to gain weight rapidly 8pd+ in 14 weeks! Partially due to the pregnancy but mostly because im off the metformin and cant exercise - at least this is what i believe. I think metformin is a good medication. However, if you are not looking to get pregnant be careful with it. If you do not want a child but want your period back i suggest birth control instead.
Avatar f tn Have been diagnosed and treated only with BC until that made me gain sooo much weight now..nothing. I found this http://pcos.insulitelabs.com/ on the web and was really interested in trying. It really sounds great. Has anyone tried?
1907238 tn?1340711313 Its primary use helps you digest sugars more efficiently and can assist in weight loss, but be careful it can also assist in weight gain. Make sure you are eating a healthy diet while you are on it, or else it might have reverse affects.
Avatar f tn I had all the symptoms of PCOS weight gain, male hair growth on the face and my stomach. I began my menstual cycle when I was 8 years old. When I got my period it would go for a few days when it would I would go like three months without having one. My period became irregular. So my doctor decided i would best for me to go on birth control. But because i was so bad with remembering to take it i to get depost injections every three months. I put on alot of weight.
Avatar f tn What I mean by we have control is you have to diet and exercise it's a must. I struggle with my weight if I'm not make a conscious effort to loss or maintain my weight I constantly gain. Since I have been on metformin I don't struggle as much as I used to my weight is pretty consistent.
