Common Questions and Answers about Metformin and no period

glucophage

I've been diagnosed with PCOS and have been on Metformin for a month now and just had my first period in five months, so it definitely works. No weight loss though. Had a bit of a reaction when I first started it, but once my body settled into it, it was fine.
I am still on the 1000mg per day metformin and no period. I am ttc and I took a pegroo test with a BFN. Has someone our there exeprience this before. Is it normal and what are the chances of me getting another period or getting pregnant. help me!
I am 24yrs old and a few months ago was diognosed with pcos, i DO NOT ovulate at all by myself and havnt had a period in 10months.... i have been taking metformin for 3wks and nothing has happened, me and my partner have been tested and besides me not ovulating there is no other reason y we shouldnt fall pregnant, i am booked in for clomid in about a month,, when do i stop taking the metformin? and has anyone fallen pregnant on only metformin? i have lost 17killos so am not overwieght either.
and to clear things up it may not be a direct action of metformin but as kelsey829 said metformin can bring on a period by hormone regulation, and recent studies show that in women with PCOS metformin is MORE effective at inducing ovulation (by hormone regulation) than clomid! ok sorry that rant is done.
I am on metformin 850mg 2x a day. I get stomach aches. and the runs (to much info) but i was not ovulating when i started metformin on 9/11/08 i have ovulated 4 times now. I'm on cycle 5 now. Also the medication does not bother me as much now either.
Once I received my BFP they moved me to metformin and suggested that I stay on the low carb thing. You have no idea how bad I want some potatoes right now! But it does help against the upset stomach. I take two a day. I am now 7w4d pregnant. I hope this helps you.
I am on 500mg twice a day and 2 months ago I started IVF and when they took the ultrasounds there was no sign of PCOS at all. I have been getting my period on my own and ovulating. I only have one ovary so I only ovulate 6 times a year and the other times my body thinks it's ovulating which results in...when? But it works and I hope you get a BFP. SSBD to you!!!
i was on metformin 2000mg to restore my period, help slow down the facial hair growth, and to help maintain my weight. It worked. With the metformin, my facial hair did not stop. It slows the rate of new growth so you're stuck with what you have but will grow fewer "new" hairs. My period came back although it wasn't terribly regular. I did see it every one to two months. Without metformin i would get it maybe once in 6months+ and the weight...
I have recently been put on birth control to regulate my periods after taking Provera and Femara for two months with no luck. My Dr. prescibed Metformin for me a few months ago, but for some reason I never took it. So I am taking birth control and am going to start taking the Metformin tomorrow (Monday) and my ultimate goal is to loose tons of weight, and have regular periods. Hopefully after this works out, I can stop taking birth control and get pregnant on my own. What does everyone think?
If it does turn out to be the metformin though I wouldn't give it up I would check into the Fortamet (world of difference for me anyway, I had a TON of side effects on metformin, not the first one on Fortamet, it costs more though so when I thought my body could handle it I talked to my doctor and switched back to the metformin). If nothing else you could always quit taking the metformin for a week and see if you get to feeling better then start back on it and see if the sickness returns.
Almost a year has gone by since I decided to get my body prepared first, and have really not dropped any weight, but haven't gained anything either, About 2-3 months ago I started my period and haven't stopped, so I finaly went to the Gyno on Wednesday 12/08/2010, and was given a Sonogram to make sure everything looked normal, which it did. I was put on progestrone to help the period stop and was prescribed Metformin at my request.
Like you, I started on 500mg once daily, and quickly increased it to 500mg twice daily. I had a period within a couple of months, but by July of August I had become more regular than ever. I now have a period every 5 weeks without fail. I hope that answers your question!
09 to make another Appt. and that Metformin will help me and get PG again. is this what ur doc. said to you? Thank you. Krushing- my doc. said it would regulate my periods so she said start to take it now so when i do get AF I would be regulated and Ovulate most likely.. can i ask how long where u on metformin when u got Pg? Thank you.
So to answer your question about the period, I think you should as for the provera to get you started all the while taking your metformin and then go from there. This is my first period since being on the meds and so after this I am praying that things will become a little more regular also I will have to go in for testing in about two weeks.

I started metformin about five weeks ago and the first four weeks weight was coming off fairly fast and this past week I haven't lost any, so my question is has anyone or is it frequent the Met will work briefly and then the weight loss will stop. I'm also just wanting to hear how much promblems people were having befor met and how much weight came off after and what amount of time did it take? Thanks for your guys help. I'd love any advice or incouraging stories.
I am on it for serveral reasons. No AF, cystic acne and to top it off type 2 diabetes.Since taken it,no skipped periods and no big cyst on my face, That last one is a blessing in its self.
In fact my oldest child's due date was very hard to determine because I was so irregular (I sometimes went 6 months without a period)...and I had not had a period for a few months when I became pregnant (I think I had my last period with her in July or August 1989...she was born July 1990). Btw...your dose looks a tad high...what formulation of metformin are you taking? My book says usual dosing is 500mg twice daily to start up to a maximum of 2550mg for regular metformin.
I had to wait 3 months after my mc to get one and then my doc put me on prometrium and clomid so I had my period and then I had to wait 2 months to get it and he put me on prometrium and a double dosage of clomid... So I don't know how many days between af!! This is so complicated!
I have been trying to conceive now since September with clomid, and this month was put on metformin to see if this would help, does anyone have suggestions on anything with PCOS and trying to get pregnant? Vitamins that you could take to increase the chances. I just would really like to conceive and it seems as if nothing is going to work, im now talking 1500mg a day of metformin and 150mg of clomid 5th day of period. please help with ideas etc...
Before taking metformin, my cycles could last up to 6 months without a period. So, I started meformin and my periods began getting normal. Started off 42 days per cycle, then worked its way down to holding steady at 35 days per cycle. Then this month, jumprs back up to 48 days in the cycle!!! How long does it take for Metformin to even stuff out enough to make cycles consistant? I have lost 37 lbs (17% body weight) and I just don't know what else I can do to make my cycles more normal!
I am 30 and I also have PCOS and endometriosis. I do NOT ovulate at all. I have like one period a year on my own. I've been on the metformin for about a year (give or take) now and the fertility doctor put me on clomid at 50 mg for 5 days and then my husband had to give me a shot of Ovidrel. The result was two mature follicles ready to go. I had my first IUI on Monday and now I am on day 4 of the two week wait.
( I have recently been put on metformin- moderate release 500mg 2 tabs a day, im getting on with them fine i have already had a period but the thing that is worring me is that my periods are normaly non existant and could this be a once in a blue moon thing...... so how will i know if i ever ovulate????? Also i really want my doc to put me on clomid aswell to increase my chance of becoming a mummy but im scared im just going to get my heart broken and that my dream will never come true.
About a month ago I had my levels checked and am no longer insilin resistant so the metformin is working. From my understaning, when you are insilin resistanct, you have more trouble ovulating-especially on your own. I don't know about hormone levels. I am lucky to have fertility covered 100% by insurance--Blue Cross Blue Sheild of IL HMO/Winn Fertility. I do recieve a statement of what insurance pays every month.
The doctor then put me on Metformin. I have been on Metformin for almost a year now and my dose was increased from 500mg to 1000mg a day. I am have several dry skin, my hair keeps falling off, and diarrhea. But one thing I don't understand is that since I have been on Metformin for so long, it does keep sort of regulate my period every month. But my testosterone and triglycerides are still high. Now, I have to deal with this sort of kidney pain and back pain everyday.
in my case their was nothing wrong with my ovaries but I did have insulin resistance which caused me very bad acne, no period at all, alittle facial hair, and definitely darking folds around my neck and arms.My OB/GYN put me on metformin and birth control. A year later I've lost 61 pounds because of it..i feel amazing. It was slow in the beginning because of the side effects from the metformin ex. stomach bloat, gas, diarrhea, and ingestion.
5 Kg (without taking METFORMIN) Then when I went back to my old infertility specialist gynecologist , she told me she already knew all this and she also gave me a prescription of METFORMIN SR 500mg but Slow release metformin and she said good time to take this is afternoon instead of night. and only to take them for only 3 months and not more than that... She also said it is better I remove my fibriods thru laparoscopy. She told me to test for AMH by EIA and I did so , It was 2.
