Common Questions and Answers about Fingernails health problems

Avatar f tn I appear to have developed ridges on my fingernails, they run vertically. Is there a medical reason for these ridges or fine vertical lines on my nails?
Avatar n tn I have an 8 yr old daughter who has two fingernails, one on each hand, that are not smooth, they are slightly bumby and the nail that grows out at the end is not uniform, curvy. They do not have complete horizontal ridges across them. Sort of like moguls on a ski slope. They are not discolored and it only occurs in those two fingernails. She has had this for close to a year. She's rarely sick and if it was nail fungus I would think it would have spread to her other nails.
Avatar n tn I really run much more than what I was used. When I finished, my fingernails were purple. Since then, they have stayed that way. A week after that, I started having many other symptoms (headaches, wooziness, etc). I was told by my doctors that it was raynauds, but now I have found out that raynaud causes attacks and then fingernails come back to normal. Mine are purple all the time, but occasionally my right thumb and left index turn very blue, although they return to purple when I press them.
Avatar n tn Hi doctor, I apologise for posting in this forum, the gastroenterology forum does not have a posting facility currently. I have a concern that is causing anxiety regarding cirrhosis symptoms and I hope you can help. I have on my big toenails an opaque area form the cuticle extending about 2/3 to the end. This looks like the phenomena of Terrys's nails to me. On my fingernails I have discoloured arcs behind every free end but the bed looks pink.
Avatar f tn Post your FT4 and FT3 levels. How much Synthroid are you taking? You may need more Synthroid or some T3 like Cytomel added to your Synthroid. You still sound hypothyroid. Also, has this doctor checked your adrenals with the 24 hour saliva test? Many hypos will have adrenal fatigue, which will also cause us to be tired. I am feeling MUCH better since starting adrenal cream. BTW - Why are you on thyroid hormone? Hashimoto's Disease?
Avatar n tn I noticed a couple days ago light yellow spots on all of my nails. I thought at first I got highlighter on my nails from work but no. Sometimes it fades and goes away and then is back. My teacher said it could be anemia? I have no idea, no health insurance so I can't just run to the doctor. Any one heard of this?
Avatar f tn ve heard that yellow nails can be indicative of health problems. I also have yellow toenails but I went to the dermatologist and she said I had a toenail fungus. I was prescribed terbinafine for my toenails and have been on it for a week. But she didn't really check my finger nails. My nails have been like that for a while though. Also when I trim my fingernails I've noticed that more of the nail bed is exposed as if the nail edge has extended backwards. If that makes sense? Please help!
Avatar m tn All of my very healthy fingernails, except two, have the semicircle of white you describe. I think this is normal, but your question has piqued my interest. I think I'll google stuff and see what I find.
622332 tn?1221610423 I started out with Graves Disease - thyroid problems when I was 22, that was 14 years ago. I was treated with RAI 131, and had a thyroid storm afterwards. Went through loads of physical therapy, dermatologists, cardiologists and other speciality doctors until I was back on my feet again. Have problems with B-12, shots don't work, so I take a form of Methyl B-12 so my body can absorb it. I've been on 200mcg of Synthroid for quite a long time.
Avatar n tn It could also be due to circulatory problems, temperature problems or a rash. You will need to see if any allergens are triggering this reaction. You may also need to notice if cold is precipitating/worsening your symptoms, to rule out Raynaud's. Hope this helped and do keep us posted.
Avatar n tn One and a half month ago, I overexercised (went running a lot more than I was used to) and when I finished, my fingernails were purple/blue. Since then, they have remained purple. A week after that I started developing many other symptoms which I'm quite sure have to do something with that. I went through several tests including EKG, echocardiogram, xray, spirometry, CT scan and blood work. All came back normal. My fingernails had never changed their colour before that incident.
Avatar f tn my son is 16 years old and his nails are white and we are having problems with he's blood pressure
Avatar f tn I have had horizontal ridges on my fingernails for probably 10 years now. I have also had soft stools consistently for years now, which I have read could be a sign of too much fat in your stool. I notice that some type of liquid/oil comes off of the stool too, and floats in the water. The stool also sticks to the side of the toilet after I flush it away. Could these be signs that something is wrong with my liver? I have read that the fingernail ridges could be due to malabsorption.
Avatar f tn I'm a 50 year old woman and my fingernails have begun to curl as they get longer?
Avatar n tn 8 out of my 10 fingernails are slightly swollen and red at the cuticle pus is oozing out of a couple also 2 of them have a white patch on .
977832 tn?1248281938 I am an eighteen year old female, and have been wondering for some time whether or not I am at slight risk for a heart condition. My fingernails are mounded/crested, especially my thumbnails, and I've been told this is often a symptom for heart disease (however, I also chewed my nails quite a bit as a child, so this might have added to it). I am also frequently cold, particularly in my extremities (hands and feet), and wonder if I have poor circulation.
Avatar n tn It can be a simple reaction to cold weather such as going outside without gloves (vasoconstriction) up to and including issues caused by respiratory problems, eymphsema, asthma, etc... to respiratory arrest. Have been to a doctor for a physical? Or do you have a history of respiratory problems?
Avatar n tn Examination of the fingernails, for example, may reveal lung problems. COPD patients im advanced stages often have fingernails that curve downward. He also wants to examine the nailbeds to determine if you have good circulation. This isn't done much nowadays, but examination of the nailbeds used to be square one. He is also looking for tremor, of course, or palsy. He is also making a determination regarding your grooming.
Avatar f tn Some of the main symptoms of hypothyroidism are weight gain/inability to lose, fatigue/tiredness, constipation, always cold, heavy or irregular menstrual periods, puffy face, hands, feet, muscle/joint ache/pain, dry skin and hair, brittle fingernails, hair loss or losing the outer portion of the eyebrows. There are others, as well. It often affects each of us differently, so there may be symptoms that I get and you might not, you get that I might not.
Avatar f tn / and I'm afraid that when in labor something may go wrong ...any advice?
