Common Questions and Answers about Estrogen and migraines

Avatar n tn So sorry to hear about your migraines getting so frequent. Sometimes estrogen can cause migraines, but not always. I've had 24/7 migraines following a stroke at age 56. I took no estrogen the first year. Then I went on an estrogen patch, then another one with a higher dose, and then another still higher dose and no difference with the migraines which were gradually becoming better from other treatments. So the estrogen may not be the cause.
280418 tn?1306325910 I stopped the pill and started Depo Provera injections, and the migraines ceased. Now, 10 years later, they started again. I have had 3 in two weeks. Interestingly enough, I had a couple this summer (hadn't been on the pill in years). I started the pill (Yaz) this Jan. and now the migraines have really increased in frequency. I stopped the pill last night to see if they at least decrease in frequency. Does any research support an increase/onset of migraines with taking the pill?
790669 tn?1465189099 i would feel discomfort usually around ovulation time and during my period. i would also get bad migraines right before my period would come down- when i would get migraines i knew my period would come that night or the next day.
Avatar f tn I think that Estratest is made with a bio estradiol but because it is mixed with Testosterone, it is hard to regulate the dosage and you might not be getting enough Estrogen and too much testosterone. I am on testosterone and Vivelle. I have lately had the most success on this combination than I have for years and years. I am 55 and had my radical hysterectomy when I was 47. I agree with Cherie 100% on the Vivelle patch. Love it.
Avatar f tn I take it for panic attacks. I heard low estrogen levels can cause migraines, anxiety and night sweats. Do they do check this in a regular blood test? I'm not sure I have ever had this checked out. I had everything else checked...I am just so fed up with this I don't nkow what to do anymore. What medications has anyone been on to help them with this?
Avatar n tn I had a hysterectomy ten years ago. Prior to the surgery, I suffered with migraines and they were significantly reduced with the use of estrogen. Since stopping the estrogen, I have been getting severe frequent migraines. Should I go back on estrogen?
Avatar f tn Before I went on the pill I occasionally got migraines which I attributed mainly to stress, while having endo. Then on the pill my migraines and worsened considerable and I got very depressed. Now that I am off the pill I still get migraines quite often but the depression has lifted. I never really had any of the usual endo symptoms so I wonder if the migraine is a symptom? Ais.
Avatar f tn after logging my headaches for years, it has become clear that those 4-6 headaches every month are menstrual migraines and the 2 different prevention meds are doing little if nothing to prevent those headaches. My OB-GYN (with my neurologists; approval) recommended that I try taking birth control pills to get rid of those menstrual migraines that I have every month.
Avatar f tn t work well for me due to the fluctuations and not giving me enough estrogen. But it did not cause migraines but I was never one to suffer with those, thankfully. Hope this helps!
Avatar f tn My previous doctor tried me in Effexor instead of estrogen for extreme menopausal symptoms and migraines because the clinic now refuses to prescribe estrogen to anyone. I had been on low dose (.25 mg) estrogen every other day over 25 years since I had to have a hysterectomy when I was in my 30s. On Effexor I could not even function. I could only work for a few minutes at a time and then would feel exhausted and unable to concentrate so I had to lie down. I cried all the time.
Avatar f tn The frequency of side effects, such as headache, decreased in those who took birth control pills containing lower doses of estrogen and did not occur in those who took birth control pills containing progesterone. Treatments: The medications of choice to stop a menstrual migraine are nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs).
Avatar f tn The radical blood sugar drops lessed in frequency and the occasional migraines did disappeared forever when the fertility gods abandoned me. Now I'm another 10+ years out. I don't think the hormones did much for OR against the MS.
Avatar n tn suggested that she discontinue her birth control pill which contains 35 mcg. estrogen. The head aches occur during her period and the pill days, too. Is there a birth control pill that does not cause migrains? She was on the 25 mcg "low" estrogen pill, but she had an ovarian cyst.
Avatar n tn I get migraines once a month and it always lasts for 3 days in a row... My gynecologist called it menstrual migraines.. does anyone else have this same thing... and if so what do you take for it?
Avatar f tn This cream made me worse at first because it apparently wakes up the estrogen receptors and makes the estrogen dominance symptoms worse. I cut my dosage back to about 1/16 to 1/8 of a teaspoon applied at night and things seem to be getting better! Finally! I'm going to talk to the doctor about adding a natural estrogen cream to the mix if things get bad again.
Avatar f tn But the combo is supposed to be good for migraines, and it works for me when I get estrogen-triggered headaches (which migraines are supposed to be also).
8725523 tn?1399590462 I had a total hysterectomy at 28yrs old and have been taking hormone replacement ever since. I am now 41. I suffer from numerous migraines a month and am concerned about taking the oral option for fear of increased migraines d/t the estrogen. I used a vaginal tablet called Vagifem for several years that worked fine, but the last 5 years or so intimacy and intercourse is so painful that I might as well take a blow torch to my vagina and let it blaze away..
Avatar m tn well meds - pursay - is not connected but the hormonal outline of them could bring one on Here is scoop in a nutshell with T4... With the conversion of the T4 medication is could require other hormones to get "active" most commonly estrogen - and the estrogen could be elevated spiking those headaches. I'd have her retested and see if she has optimal labs.
Avatar n tn I would be happy that I was drinking less and giving my liver a break, except I have to battle the migraines anyway and I am consuming way too much medication, but I have no choice. The migraines are so sever and disruptive and I have to continue living my life somehow. I am newly engaged and have a thousand events going on in which I would like to enjoy a cocktail or two (especially my own wedding?!?
988694 tn?1332359479 I have visited two GYN and they both have told me that I am not in perimenopause according to one progesterone and estrogen test. I am not yet 40, but a yer ago I started to have chronic migraines almost every day, spotting before my period (usually the week before), change in my taste, insomnia, anxiety, and lately some urgency to go to the bathroom. I think that I have had one hot flash that I thought was the result of a large dose of vitamin D I had to take.
Avatar f tn t think my neurological symptoms are caused by my menopause but I do think my migraines are! And my migraines seem to exacerbate my neuro symptoms both from migraine aura and from TM. Alex you sound like I used to be with my periods, not much fun. I had a IUD Marina put in because I was constantly suffering from anemia. Wobbly I am on 1800mg of Gabapentin but I didn't realise how good it was until I wasn't on it!!!
1132246 tn?1260288259 You know I don't know about the estrogen, only because my sister got better in Menopause and that would drop estrogen wouldn't it? But you never know, when you are in that much pain, anything is worth a try. I use a cocktail I call it too.........magnesium, tramadol, zomig, and neurontin. If you have to go to the ER ask about DHE, but they have to know how to use it. Prevention medications would really be necessary for you, because you are in so much pain.
1806721 tn?1554333407 Midijane, thank you for the reply! It really helped knowing that I'm not the only one struggling with this and feeling like a baby. I'm feeling better today - able to keep down fluid and meds, able to sleep last night after the pain and sensitivities subsided. I am pretty sure that my migraine is hormone-related. I never had any migraine before in my life. This happened after my miscarriage 11 weeks ago.
1673736 tn?1304180812 I never had anyone explain to me before how the menstrual cycle was related to migraines. I do know that all the girls in my family get migraines, and they all started right at the age they started menstruating. So I knew hormones were involved, I just didn't know how. Thank you so much.
Avatar f tn I went to a hormone doctor, they drew blood and found out I had way to much estrogen in my body. Which can be because of milk and meat and plastics. Well being a vegitarian I knew it was not the meat...lol. But, I ate soy meat and drank soy milk. These raise you estrogen. Also I drank bottled water in plastic. WEll laying off of these helped some , got hormone free reg milk and cut down on soy meats but it took taking Indole-3 carbinol 400 mg. a day to work.
1001420 tn?1281789449 I always get lots of migraines before my period. And, when my chronic migraines are in remission or under control, I still get menstrual migraines... so, no matter what, I will always get at least one migraine before my period!
Avatar f tn While brief courses may be necessary, and the the risks and benefits of this can be discussed further with your doctor, it is important to try to avoid long-term supplemental hormonal therapy such as estrogen, as it can make your migraines worse and increase risk of heart disease, stroke, and cancer. Thank you for this opportunity to answer your questions, I hope you find the information I have provided useful, good luck.
Avatar f tn I was so happy that at least that was better and the migraines went away so they must be associated with the rise in estrogen. After my surgery the constipation went away because they removed a rectovaginal cyst that was blocking and causing pain when I would have bowel movements. Now 4yrs after the surgery I do feel better but now my uterus is adhered to my bowels and my ovary attached to my uterus. I have cramping once in a while but I am now having side effects of the pill i think.
