Since most medication is seen as foreign and therefore toxic by the liver to varying degrees, and since the liver is necessary to metabolize antidepressants, it might wash out some of your medication before it has a chance to be absorbed. That could weaken the benefits you're receiving from it, or even throw you into withdrawal theoretically. I say theoretically because most detox teas are very weak liver cleansers, but there you have it.
6' and 190lb seems like a good weight for your height. So I am suprised you have a fatty liver at your age. You must stay pretty active. The other thing this points to is poor diet. Having a fatty liver can lead to liver disease and quite often cirrhosis. So to answer your question "can having a fatty liver cause elevated liver enzymes?" Absolutely!
Do you take any other medications on a regular basis? Pain pills? Even for head ache.
i don't know whether you take antidepressants. i do and i am on effexor and i have fatty liver caused by effexor xr. I don't drink alcohol and iam only 26.
why has your dr. prescribed effexor if your doing well on the kolonopin? yes! effexor gave me severe heart palpitations. they were so bad one night i had my husband take me to the hospital, i was also having severe jaw pain. they checked me out and said i was fine and sent me home. they recomended that i get a stress test which i did and it came back fine. my regular m.d, the hospital and the heart dr.

hi, i was on effexor for 5 years and it does make you sweat alot, one of the many side effects of this med. i did'nt have the ammonia smell, that's something i've never heard of before. he should ask his dr. about this to find out what's going on. how is he doing otherwise on this med? is it helping his depression, is he having any other side effects? i hope you find out what's causing the ammonia smell. take care.
All medication affects the liver at least a little in an adverse way, since the liver has to decide if it's going to let the body have this strange substance it isn't adapted to having in the system. And the liver is what metabolizes these meds -- if the liver won't metabolize it, it won't work. That being said, Effexor is not a big culprit with the liver. It can happen, but it's rare with that med.
s they CAN effect the way your liver metabolizes fats ie the enzymes get compromised somehow in SOME people. Liver cannot metabolize correctly and fat gets deposited in your belly, omemtum area!
taking Wellbutrin I lost weight, about 12lbs from my normal weight, so I was actually too skinny! Of course I like being thin!

Your liver enzyme levels are outside of the normal range which suggest some sort of issue involving your liver. There are many potential causes from medication your are taking to hepatitis. You should schedule a followup visit with your doctor or preferably a specialist to figure out what is going on. You should not just ignore this or assume it will go away.
I have HEP C & currently take 20mg. of Paxil (for several years) and find that it's no longer working very well /not working at all. It's also not great for the liver. I need to be on an antidepressant - but one that's safer than Paxil, if such a drug exists. Every search I've performed leads to long, convoluted stories. I just need an answer or suggestions. Not SAM-e. Is anyone taking an antidepressant that's easy(ier) on the liver? Any info. would be a great help.
Its day 4. The wellbutrin is taking charge. Been on wellbutrin for a 7 or 8 yrs. Been on effexor for around 6 yrs. I think the effexor suppresses the welbutrin. I noticed signs that my libido's coming back. Forgot I used to have a libido before effexor.
My mood is better. The withdraw is a lot less, unless I start thinking negative or stressful thoughts.

i recently got blood work for my yrly check up my ALT (Liver test) came back a 69 it says average is 9-60 how bad is this im extremely worried and its not helping my anxiety issues at all. please help me here. my doctor said to check blood work again next yr but im very worried.
I was on a high dosage of effexor for years and, before that other anti depressant drugs for 17 years. I've weaned myself off, finishing in February, 2009. What are the side affects after so many months? I went through withdrawls like a junkie would for 2 months. I am now interested to see if what and how I am feeling is due to the lack of that drug or some other cause. Thank you.
I am doing ok on it untll i started to havé serious and disturbing night sweats and stressfull dreams . As well as bad liver blood exams . I was told that m'y liver is getting intoxicated with thé zoloft . This scared me so i reduced from 50 to 25 Mgs per day , thé withdrawals are a little hard. Iwould plan on reducing it more ! I am afraid all together as this drug changed m'y life and made me feel so much better .
What your doc has seen is the new info on Cymbalta that came out when the manufacturer applied for an additional approval for fibromyalgia and other pain sufferers and the FDA committee discovered at least a dozen liver deaths from Cybalta. But Pristiq, which is the new and improved Effexor, might have the same not yet revealed problem. In the old days, when tricyclics were the rage, everyone on them had to get their liver enzymes checked regularly. Most meds are liver toxic to an extent.
Actually, Effexor can be taken safely together with Lexapro. In fact many P-docs perscribe the two in combination.
If your goal is to eliminate the Effexor than my suggestion would be to VERY slowly taper the Effexor down, while starting the Lexapro immidiatly.
Don't rush the Effexor taper because you can take the Lexapro while reducing the Effexor. No worry about any adverse reaction between mixing the two.
Hi. I'm on tamoxifen so I can't take any meds which inhibit cyp2D6 enzymes. I've been on almost ALL SSRI ( Effexor, lexapro, celexa, nortriptyline, fetzima, & viibryd) & my depression worsens with them (suicidal thoughts, etc). The only one that has helped is remeron but every time I've had to return to remeron I gain weight. I'm usually 110-112 and eat very well & workout almost everyday.
Yes, you can gain weight on Effexor. You can also lose. The difficulty with Effexor is it's an snri, not an ssri, which means it has affinity not just for serotonin but also norepinephrine. That can make it a very difficult drug to be on and come off of, but it can also make it very effective for those who suffer from depression primarily and anxiety secondarily, since norepinephrine is much more specific to depression than serotonin.
My doctor wanted to try Effexor. I told her years ago I was on Prozac during counseling for depression in a bad marriage and weaned myself off after a year. Have done fine for awhile until now. I started caring for a brother who is waiting for a kidney/liver transplant. I read where Prozac might not be good for anxiety that it may cause anxiety? Also I read where there are other medications better for someone my age.
I have never written in a forum before, but have been reading these for awhile now, especially since trying to get off Effexor XR. I have been on Effexor XR 225 milligrams for about 6 years after an extremely difficult 6 months at the time resulting in major depression and anxiety with panic attacks. To me, Effexor XR with an occasional alprazolam 0.25 milligrams (Xanax) had been the miracle drugs and saved my life. I take my medication every morning anywhere between 8 and 10 a.m.
compazine may help with nausea and might be useful....How long have you been on the effexor? Give it a while before you adjust effexor....and let your Doc adjust it (I cant stand effexor personally - but we all react differently) Check out the Thomas Recipe and Amino Acid Protocol links listed in Health Pages here.....they work....good luck!
