1415407 tn?1389254933 Does anyone know of an online support group for autistic parents of autistic children? I see a lot about parents of autistic children but not much for autistic parents. It is quite.a bit harder trying to raise children with disabilities when you have a disability yourself. I'd love to read what other people have to say on this subject.
Avatar f tn t prevent most bodily functions from occurring- for instance, unless there is an additional physical issue, an autistic child can urinate just fine. Although they possibly may not be potty trained due to the impulse control signals from the brain that are required for potty training- their bodies would still get rid of waste just like anyone else though.
Avatar f tn at 15mg of percs. wondering if i should taper to 7.5 or C/T or use clonodine and how much? can't afford to be to sick becasue i care for my autistic grandaughter with no help.
Avatar f tn Thanks for the comment. My son tested negative for Fragile X. His behaviors have resulted in a firm diagnosis of Severe Autism by all of his eight specialists. The genetic testing was to possibly find out why he has Autism and to provide data for research purposes. His father and I have also given blood for these tests but have not been given our results. I find the whole thing very interesting. I do believe that Autism is a genetic disorder.
Avatar n tn They will not respond to reason but they will respond when they know that they will be rewarded for treating you well and for doing the chores, work, learning lessons that you want them to do. It is not ok for autistic children to be rude to their parents and caregivers.

Avatar f tn My husband's brother is autistic (his parents had 3 children, the oldest is autistic and the younger two have had no medical problems). My husband and I are thinking about having children soon and were wondering - does my brother-in-law's autism mean that we are at a greater risk of having an autistic child? There are no other autistic family member or extended family members that we know of.
Avatar n tn For what it's worth, I know about a hundred (maybe more) famlies with children on the autistic spectrum and I only know of one family with autistic twins. I have two children myself: the older one is diagnosed with PDD-NOS and the other has a diagnosis of "teenage NOS!" What you can do is to join a support group. I couldn't have done it alone without the helpand support of others in my autistic community.
Avatar f tn My 12 yr old autistic daughter has reached the level in kickboxing to spar. Her main autistic deficit is comprehension and I'm cautious to have her spar for fear of behavior issues. Have any studies been done on our children to determine if engaging in physical activity such as sparring could trigger behavior issues? She is mild mannered for the most part but when she gets frustrated or too much is coming at her at once, her anxiety level goes from 0 to 100 in a matter of seconds.
539620 tn?1220990377 The taper just seems to draw out the symptoms and side effects for too long for me. If I had small children at home, it would make it worse. You can expect to be irritable, anxious, depressed, nervous along with having the runs, palpitations of your heart, hot/cold sweats and nausea. Fun huh? Now follow me here.....just as you have read, it is just like the flu. For me, I would rather have everything at once than a little of it all for 6 weeks.
Avatar f tn Please help. My son is autistic. He has bowel issues. He can hold in an enema. He is on several meds. Adderall, Metformin, Risperdol, clonidine. I'm wondering if the weight gain is causing the adderall to be less effective. He's on 20mgs in the morning and 10mgs in the afternoon. He complains about he can't focus any more. It's making him very upset and very hard to deal with. I'm at my wits end. He will only deal with me. I feel like I'm a terrible mother.
Avatar f tn Studies are showing out of 10,000 women that were induced over the last few years 99% of them had autistic children. What do yall think about that?
6583170 tn?1385317938 I heard this a few months ago also, but a lady I know who has an autistic child said that there is no way the vaccine can give a child autism. She said that both parents must be carriers of the gene for it to be possible for a child to be autistic. I don't know much about it personally, but I'm sure she does as she has been to many specialists with her son and she is very involved in his therapies.
Avatar m tn The inverse association found for folic acid use in early pregnancy and subsequent risk for autistic disorder was not found for folic use during midpregnancy. Although no association was found between prenatal folic acid supplementation and Asperger syndrome or PDD-NOS, "power was limited," note the investigators. In addition, further analysis showed no association between risk for an ASD and use of fish oil supplements.
Avatar n tn As a doctor who works extensively with autistic children, I can tell you they are not going to alert you when they are ready to be trained... children with autism do not see anything outside their own comfort zone. If it does not bother them to be wet or soiled, they will not try to change it. It is important to help the child gain a connection between the need to go to the bathroom and the act of going to the bathroom... this is done using a system of PECS (picture exchange system) cards...

1255530 tn?1269867619 Delayed or unusual speech patterns (many autistic children, for example, memorize video scripts and repeat them word for word with the precise intonation as the TV characters) High pitched or flat intonation Lack of slang or "kidspeak" Difficulty understanding tone of voice and body language as a way of expressing sarcasm, humor, irony, etc.
Avatar n tn You might be able to find a Play Therapist who uses this type of approach, but you need one that is working with social interaction with children on the autistic spectrum and not one who uses play to enable traumatised children to vent their emotions/experiences - there is a big difference. A agree that little dogs are too vulnerable. We used to have a hamster and my son would stuff it in all kinds of places. It got wedged in the teapot once (he was copying Alice in Wonderland)!
Avatar f tn t know where the other one was). They tested autistic children for lyme disease and got 90 percent positive in one project and 80 percent in the other. I would love to read the reports on these but they are not published on the Internet. I so dearly wish they were widely published as the information would save thousands of autistic children worldwide. The lyme induced autism website has some useful info but beware of the online support group that it links to.
Avatar n tn what your saying about autistic behavior is not the case with all autistic children...there are many different behaviors that do not effect all kids the same way...there are also different severities for being on the ASD that range from very mild, to mild, to moderate to severe. She (steimy) really needs to get him evaluated to know for sure...
Avatar f tn Strattera, Risperdal, and Clonidine. We are looking for another doctor who might know more about Autism and his psychologist doesn't seem to get it. We also want to know of other meds for a teen that might work better. Any thoughts out there? The older he gets, the more emotional he gets. Hormones for sure, so has someone gone through this before? He was diagnosed as mildly autistic when he was younger, but now they are saying he is low functioning. Going nuts.
