Avatar m tn I think the world would disagree with you. The only people claiming it is not addictive are those prescribing it for children with ADD/ADHD. There are safer ways to treat this ailment.
Avatar f tn You are certainly not alone in this and emotionality is certainly not unique to children diagnosed with autism during the teenage years. I’m sure you want your grandson to be happy and healthy and affect changes like you are describing becomes even more difficult to deal with if the child is unable to tell you why he or she is upset.
Avatar n tn ADHD and "hyperactivity" are the same thing - that's the same diagnosis. I'm really shocked he's already been put on meds at his young age of 3. I really think you need a better diagnosis, a more thorough testing procedure - children with hyperactivity aren't this delayed in speech, or usually very difficult to toilet train. best wishes.

16638194 tn?1449934941 I am in desperate need of some insight regarding medication for Autism and ADHD. My son is 7 years old. He started out on Risperdal when he was 4 but we quickly took him off because he quickly ballooned by 15 lbs. in 1 month. We eventually ended up on Abilify and Tenex (Guanfacine) and he's been taking that combination for about 3 years. Now we are at the point where those two meds were not working at all and we were already at the approved dosage limits.
536849 tn?1213582734 my nephew is two months away from turning four, he has shown signs of having autism, and is awaiting an appointment with a specialist he has recently begun eating his own feces...........could this be another sign of the autism?
6583170 tn?1385317938 There is no real link between MMR vaccine and autism. The only thing that was a cause for concern with childhood vaccinations was a mercury based preservative called Thimerosal. Studies Even showed that that didn't even have a direct link with an increased chance of autism developing in children but just to be safe the FDA banned it from being used in childhood vaccinations. I believe by 2001, if not earlier, all childhood vaccinations no longer contained that ingredient.

143123 tn?1274300825 I am trying to speak with parents or people with first hand experiences with autism. I have a 9 month old niece and my brother informed my mother that the pediatrician had mentioned she may be autistic because of the size of her head. Everything I have read states that autism is diagnosed through milestones, etc. and not by physical characteristics. My niece was born 5 weeks early, but didn't have to go to the NICU after birth.
Avatar n tn Neuroimaging work has found that children with autism aged 2 to 4 had larger brains with more cerebral and cerebellar white matter and more cerebral cortical grey matter than typically developing children of the same age (Courchesne et al., 2001). However, Carper and colleagues (e.g., Carper et al., 2002) found that children with autism gain substantially less grey and white matter in the frontal lobes from early to late childhood relative to typically developing children.
Avatar f tn i am a memeber of a social group for kids with aspergers, a few months ago a few of the mothers were talking about their children taking clonidine the moms noticed favorable results, i am familiar with this drug, i did not know that developmental pediatric doctors, are now putting aspie kids on clonidine, how do you feel about this?
Avatar f tn His friends get bored with him, even his cousins that he was once closer to as children are getting bored with him, , I dont think they fully understandhis disorder.. I wondered what causes the sensory issues (pulling back when someone tries to hug him or gets to close to him, wearing loose fitting clothing etc.? What more can I do to help him more? thanks.
Avatar f tn My five year old son has high functioning autism and ADHD. He is now potty trained but can be quite hyperactive before bedtime and has a hard time winding down at night. We have tried everything to calm him down and have a good bedtime routine. He gets plenty of fresh air and exercise. He is on 20 mg of ritilan during the day. His psychiatrist prescribed 1 tablet of clonidine before bedtime to help him fall asleep and stay asleep. The medication has worked for this.
470168 tn?1237471245 s brain, would effectively change him into a different person. For some parents with severely autistic children that option may have been a blessing. Just thought I'd throw out this information for discussion.

Avatar f tn New studies have 100% shown that the delivery of the child has nothing to do with autism. I have two children with autism, my first son was an extremely bad delivery and we both almost died. My third child was a perfect pregnancy and delivery and she still has autism. My husband has asperges and so does his other son to his previous marriage. 100% genetic!
Avatar f tn I worked with children with autism for about 9 years before I had my first child. I do have to say, that I didn't notice any symptoms of autism until after he had his 2 year old vaccinations. My 5 year old has the same diagnosis as your daughter of mild autism.
Avatar n tn You can then look into other avenues for him. Montesorri programs are excellent for kids with autism. Our public school system has within it a preschool program of this nature that has inclusion. Another thing to consider, if he misses one day of preschool------- could he attend the others? Could you pick him up and take back to school?? My son has sensory integration disorder and for one quarter, I picked him up for his appts.
Avatar f tn It is a misconception that people with autism are not affectionate. I've actually found just the opposite to be true, they are quite loving. My daughter LOVES hugs and kisses and always has. I know plenty of other children on the spectrum who are the same way. I'm not entirely sure where this myth came from.
Business woman1 Have you posted this in other groups? There are several which might help in addition to comments in this forum. You might try these community groups: Children-Special Needs, Autism, Sleep Disorders. You might also post in the "expert" forums: Autism and Aspergers, Child Behavior. Good luck.
Avatar f tn There are better ways to control the symptoms such as cognitive behavioral therapy (I have seen this in person because I volunteered for a while at a center for children with autism, constructive behavioral therapy was how they were helped). Adhd can be over diagnosed and although I do know some adults with adhd who have benefited from medication given the severe side effects of some current treatment it should be used with caution in young people.
219373 tn?1274921434 just prior to having her testing in which she was diagnosed with these she was on adderall for suspected ADD and the adderall was very effective for her concentration and focus, making schoolwork and chores etc much less stressful and frustrating. after her testing i was told she definalty does not have ADD and the aspergers is making her loose focus and have trouble with concentration etc. she was taken off the adderall and has not been doing nearly as well.
Avatar n tn Hi Teresa, I am an ABA therapist for children with autism. I would recommend going to a developmental psychologist and getting an official diagnosis. Autism is a spectrum disorder and is very different from child to child.
