Clonidine used in children

Common Questions and Answers about Clonidine used in children

Avatar n tn I belong to a support group for teachers and parents of children suffering from anxiety. Many of the children take medication - including Celexa. About four children in our group are on this medication (all in conjuction with intervention and/or therapy). For these children, this "drug" seems to work the best with the fewest side effects. Our child takes Celexa - before that Prozac and Effexor. Celexa is the best one for her - so far.
Avatar f tn Clonidine was initially used as an antihypertensive but it has come to be used to treat a variety of behavioral disorders including tics, symptoms of ADHD, aggression, PTSD, anxiety, panic disorder, or sleep problems. Medication of this sort can be helpful and has shown to be most effective in conjunction with systematic behavioral programming.
656243 tn?1231288052 When I was working as an ER nurse I frequently observed it being used for opiate withdrawal, and for sleep in children with ADHD. It seems to be a one man band.
Avatar f tn I too would recommend trying the Clonidine. As others have said, it is an anti-hypertensive medication that does help to relieve w/d symptoms quite successfully. It will not take them away completely, but it will minimize some of the symptoms, by reducing the sympathetic nervous system response, such as tachycardia and high BP. It's not a habit-forming drug, and really, the biggest consideration is some hypotension (low BP).
Avatar f tn Clonidine stimulates central alpha-adrenergic receptors which result in a decrese in your sympathetic nervous system. This will help to keep your heart rate down, anxiety reduced and will almost eliminate the cold sweats. I have used it befor and am currently taking it as we speak. I take 0.1mg every eight hours. For acute W/D you can take 0.2mg every eight hours. but not for more that 10 days. you should taper off the last 2 days. i know you have the patch but it is the same drug.
585414 tn?1288941302 They did work. I just couldn't tolerate the side effects some of which are statistically rare so there's no point discussing them. As for Clonidine its primary use in me is in controlling dystonic spasms but it does work as a mood stabilizer. I do feel quite tired from it but thankfully my blood pressure has not been affected too badly (not the same as with Atenolol I took years ago as a side effect pill, that dropped my blood pressure to the point where it was unsafe).
1967424 tn?1325633780 you need to see your doctor to get a prescription. I used clonidine while detoxing and it did help me a lot with gastric symptoms..But I was being prescribed and monitored by my doc and had been on the clonidine while tapering. It is very important because everyone has different BP's and it lowers yours... Again agreeing with IDK to take deep breaths and contact your doctor...Hang in there and keep posting...
Avatar m tn anyone have any info on using Clonidine .1 mg for opiate withdrawal systems? Suppose to be a high blood pressure medication, but says it can be used for withdrawal systems too? wondering if it really works?
880900 tn?1467270141 I used Clonidine during detox and was glad I had it! As long as you don't have blood pressure issues, then I think it will not harm anyone. Clonidine helps stabelize the bp and it really was a godsend for me! I only had 12 of them and so I wasn't on them very long. I didn't have to tapper off either. I also took cymbalta and remeron for sleep, now I take 2 cymbalta a day and the remeron at night.
Avatar m tn I would stay on the clonidine. My doctor said to stay on it at .1mg three times a day for the first two weeks after you taper to a new level, or quit. Then go down to .1mg twice per day for a week, then .1mg once per day for a week and then quit. The directions that come with it say you shouldn't stop it abruptly, and my doctor and pharmacist told me the same thing. Otherwise, your body goes the opposite direction and causes higher blood pressure and symptoms you are describing.
198154 tn?1337787265 my BP is always on the low side also..but when your in WD's it does not stay low, thus purpose of clonidine, used often for WD's but only a caring doctor will give it, most would rather see you suffer....i took .1 mg of clonidine 3 times daily...worked tremendously well...if taking clonidine will help get you off your d.o.c.,...take it as your doctor has prescribed it...regardless of what you think MIGHT happen...
Avatar f tn in the morning so did not stay on it...neurontine would help wds in many ways///and it is a safe drug...clonidine is not truly addictive in the sense we speak of...but a drug that can cause emergency situations..... Ur total oxy dose was 110 mgs daily...again..low BP is a concern with the clonidine and patches can not be controlled as they continually release/pill form can be more easily controlled as u can skip a dose if ur BP is low.....this is sumpin u need to refer to ur dr...
Avatar f tn Be careful not to think more is better because you will just drop your blood pressure and end up in the ER or worse. Clonidine is a blood pressure medication but is known to ease WD in very small dosages. Ok if prescribed by your doctor. I like patch better because you will not try to take more to make you feel better, Good luck..
Avatar f tn I drove to the drug store to fill my prescriptions but instead went in to by sleep aide. I did not fill the clonidine. I am not looking for anymore high. I just want to be over this. I am going to get some counseling after this is over.
1335947 tn?1275685447 Its for high blood pressure, they have also used it for insomnia, and adhd in children, dosing for wd's are usually .4mgs .. I have tried it.. It will help with the chills, watery eyes, and runny nose.. It wont help with the cramps!!! Nor the lower back pain!!! It also gives you dry mouth. I could fall asleep for a lil bit, but would wake back up very uncomfortable!! I don't know how it works for others though. Read up on it!! When they gave it to me, I googled it!!!
Avatar n tn Cases of sudden death are very rare, and have been linked to undetected heart conditions (the recommendation to physicians is to obtain a thorough clinical history and to conduct examinations with the intent of ruling out contraindications).
Avatar f tn t know if the first two are used in children but the Catapres (Clonidine) patch is and it can be very helpful. Go to a trained movement disorders specialist and ask for a test for tardive dyskinesia. Its not reversible in general but in mild cases (unlike mine) and if caught early may receed over time. For more information google "patient education tardive dyskinesia".
Avatar f tn Hello, yes I have been taking this combination of Vyvanse (70mg per day in the am) and Clonidine (0.2mg in the afternoon and 0.2mg at night). I highly prefer Vyvanse over adderall because I do not suffer from side effects w/Vyvanse as with the adderall. The Vyvanse is much smoother than most all other adhd drugs. I have never experienced shortness of breath while taking Vyvanse, however, I am 25 years old and 180lbs. I am also a Registered Nurse.
Avatar m tn My doctor tried all the drugs you see on TV and in the end I am taking 10mg oxy 3 times a day and .1mg of clonidine 4 times a day. I have tried going a day only taking one of the drugs but only get relief by taking both. While still being on oxy is not the best I did reduce my intake. I was on 30mg oxy 4 to 5 times a day at my highest dose.
349859 tn?1257790973 Yes, it was used in my accelerated detox. My "support person" had very strict rules as to when she could give me one. The main rule was that she had to check my blood pressure. If it was below a certain point, then she could not give me the medicine. My detox was performed by an addiction specialist. Clonodine helped me tremendously! I was coming off a very large daily dosage of straight oxycodone. Like others said.
237152 tn?1206651036 I was on 10-15 7.5/325 hydros per day. Day 1 was rough, day 2 not great, today not great either, but tomorrow will start day 4. I'm just concerned about being in charge of 3 young children alone if it makes me really sleepy. My blood pressure was 122/84 at the Dr.'s office, so I am a little hesitant to lower it, but I will take it if it helps and doesn't cause any trouble. I only plan on a few days, tops. If at all. The cravings suck more than anything.
1124967 tn?1283705847 1mg on clonidine this morning. It is not hleping. For those who have used clondine for help with wd, what was your dosing amount? Is .1mg a low amount? Should that be helping her at this point? Does anyone know the usually dosing amounts to help for severe wd or what the max allowable for clonidine? Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Avatar f tn Your might get a lot of info as to how lack of magnesium affects the behavior in children if you google it. Before giving your child magnesium,I remember reading that a DR needs to check for the deficiency.I'm not exactly sure something about the effects of too much magnesium in the body? I hope someone here could answer your question. I know there's also been a lot of talk about the feingold diet for ADHD. You could get more info on this throughout the web. You could also go to www.
585414 tn?1288941302 Technically those medications are for my physical disability (which the Tenex was not working on as well as it should) but they serve as mood stabilizers as well (Clonidine is sometimes used for this officially). But yesterday going off the Tenex and starting the Clonidine there was a "rush" a feeling I don't enjoy because it signals the onset of mania. Today is a bit better. But I have to raise the medications at a scheduled titration.
