Avatar n tn While I have knowledge about psychotropic medications and how they are used, I can not offer the same level of expertise as a psychiatrist. That said, I do have extensive experience with making psychiatric diagnoses in children, so I will limit my recommendations to addressing those concerns, and refer you to seek a psychiatrist's guidance to learn more about drug interactions. The first matter of importance to consider is regarding your son's prescribing physician.
Avatar m tn I think the world would disagree with you. The only people claiming it is not addictive are those prescribing it for children with ADD/ADHD. There are safer ways to treat this ailment.
Avatar n tn My son was diagnosed with the same disorder around the same age. What I had to do in order to cope with it was to read up more about it and get alot of support. The key to any child especially with ADHD is to keep them active. My son use to be on straterra but now he's grown out of it. My son is now 11 soon to b 12 and he's alot more calmer than when he was younger. At the age of 5 my son would run pee wee track for our church...lol!
Avatar f tn He cannot sleep, the doctor suggested putting him on clonidine to help. Has anyone had any experience with taking clonidine as a sleep aid while on vyvanse? Also, my son is extremely short of breath when doing any physical activity. He takes 50 mg of Vyvanse daily and was wondering if anyone has experienced this side effect with Vyvanse. Thank you.
Avatar f tn Clonidine is increasingly used in conjunction with stimulants to treat attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), for which it is administered in late afternoon or evening for sleep." Yet, a stimulant med is not being used?
Avatar f tn Steven Hyman, director of the National Institute of Mental Health, says he was shocked that either clonidine, an adult blood-pressure drug that appears to be increasingly used to treat ADHD symptoms or insomnia, or the older generation of tricyclic antidepressants were being given at all to preschoolers. Clonidine in combination with stimulants has been associated with heart problems in children.
Avatar f tn Hi darlene , there has been findings that some children with ADHD have a magnesium deficiency. Your might get a lot of info as to how lack of magnesium affects the behavior in children if you google it. Before giving your child magnesium,I remember reading that a DR needs to check for the deficiency.I'm not exactly sure something about the effects of too much magnesium in the body? I hope someone here could answer your question.
Avatar n tn I am trying to alter his diet since I have read this online as a possible cause, but actually we feel lost and would like to help him, but do not know where to start. He is on Clonidine and has been for awhile and it has not helped with the tics, for they seem to be getting worse. Please advise on some possible solutions and please list any support groups in chicago northwest suburbs where we might find support and answers. Thank you for your time.

Avatar f tn t trying to say he was wrong, I was just concerned since he said the exact opposite. What is you experience with these medicines with children? And in your experience is this something you think she will outgrow?
Avatar n tn My son has ADD/ADHD and he takes vyvanse but the doctor also prescribed guafacine which is normally used with people with high blood pressure but it has been found that it works bettt6with children with ADD/ADHD. I really have seen a change in his anxiety and levels the vyvanse chemistry out. You should speak to your doctor about it. They say vyvanse is better for children to take anyway.

Avatar f tn My 12 year old son has been diagnosed with a "mood disorder" and ADHD. His father is a rapid cycling bipolar and I see so many of the same bahaviors in my son. How do I get his psych dr to agree to try a mood stabalizer on him? He is currently on Clonidine, Resperidal, and about 6 weeks ago they put him on Adderall as well.
Avatar f tn Frankly, if she has anxiety, I would try and deal with the cause which is probably ADHD. The best way to deal with ADHD is to really understand it. One book I have been recommending to do so is the, "ADD / ADHD Answer Book by Susan Ashley. Not sure where you are getting your information for meds, but if you haven't done so, I would look into a pediatric psychiatrist who specializes in ADHD.

Avatar n tn 15 yr old daughter was diag with adhd 2nd grade - although was family "joke" adhd long before. 1st on adderall with explosive behavior - had to try before could take straterra, insurance. Strattera was fine for sev yrs - although only limited imp - just enough to tolerate her. Problems with social interaction and her mouth - she's constantly argumentative and I believe ODD. After menstruation began, strattera appeared worthless.

454366 tn?1211245301 The med I was given for that has a side effect of osteoporosis in the lumbar in long term use (Synthroid). I ended up with litium toxicity a few years back because diuretics will cause that. As you know caffine is a diuretic (soft drinks) - which most kiddo's I know tend to drink. I would not allow litium to be given to my child; not going through what I have with it. I have a son who is ADHD. I stopped giving him the Concerta that was prescribed to him.
Avatar n tn ADHD and "hyperactivity" are the same thing - that's the same diagnosis. I'm really shocked he's already been put on meds at his young age of 3. I really think you need a better diagnosis, a more thorough testing procedure - children with hyperactivity aren't this delayed in speech, or usually very difficult to toilet train. best wishes.
