Avatar n tn I want to build some muscle. I want to lose fat. From what I can tell, these two at the same time is next to impossible. What if I avoid cardio on days that I lift weights? Do I consume slightly more protein than normal to help build muscle, perhaps a little less on days I am doing cardio (on those days consume more carbs)? I just don't get it and I want to know from a doctor instead of the countless contradictions on the web. How is the best way to go about this?
Avatar f tn Two most effective exercises that I will suggest you to gain weight are use of heavy weight lifts & in addition do anaerobic exercises. Weight lifts such as pulls-ups, dead lifts, squats, barbell rows, bench presses, bar dips, etc are effective in building muscle mass. Anaerobic exercises use muscle at high strength in short period of time & that's reason it is good for muscle weight gain.
Avatar m tn I'm way below the average weight, very slim, and always feeling weak (feeling weak may also be due to my anxiety), and I'm really wanting to do some exercise, but I want to start off really easy and simple just to get me started. So, what simple exercises can I start doing that won't take too much effort? The more I start doing simple exercises, i'm going to try and build up to much harder ones.

Generally you should try to get 15-25 g of quality protein, with .5-.7 g of carbohydrate per pound of body weight immediately post-exercise.

522699 tn?1250590716 There are many home exercises that you can do. the idea to build muscle is to push yourself to muscular fatigue. Personal trainers are much better at pushing you harder than you can yourself, but just push yourself as hard as you can. Make sure you have a sufficiently accurate diet to help which means no cupcakes for pre-exercise food..LOL. Protein will help rebuild muscle but you must work it out in order for the protein to rebuild it.
Avatar m tn We need both good carbs and good fats to survive. Simple carbs are bad, Complex carbs are good. Unsaturated fats are good. They are divided into monounsaturated fats and polyunsaturated fats. Saturated and trans fat are bad. Try not to mix or combine carbs and fats into single groups.
Avatar m tn re a marathon runner or something like that. Whereas an athlete who is trying to build muscle will require more protein, as will someone trying to lose weight or turn fat to muscle. There are many books advocating different ratios. There is a theory that blood type is involved, or ethnicity, or where you happen to live. It's not bad to read up on these theories, then make a diet for yourself that serves your particular needs and makes you feel good.

Avatar n tn It’s important not to restrict calories too much as you seek to improve athletic performance that will lead to muscle gains because the practice can sabotage muscle-building efforts. It can also diminish metabolism and lead to fatigue or illness. Strength, or resistance, training will help you build muscle, which is metabolically active, meaning it will burn calories even when at rest.
Avatar f tn Hi, the best way to exercise is do some aerobic training which will result in fat loss and getting the body in good shape. If you particularly want to do some exercises for your legs then cycling is the best. Also diet is an important factor to consider if you are concentrating on fat loss. That should not contain sugars, refined carbohydrates and fatty substances. I hope this helps.
Avatar f tn First you should set small and very reachable goals, as you accomplish a goal it will help keep you motivated and build your confidence. You can honestly spend 15 minutes a day doing 20/10 intervals of basic bodyweight exercises. 20 seconds on 10 seconds rest. Try to get more protein in your diet and cut out a lot of carbohydrates. 1269982 tn?1271173219 Protein shakes are actually not good for weight loss and are used primarily to gain body mass which may then be converted into muscle. Also certain brands of protein shakes actually have a high level of carbohydrates in them which could result in your weight gain. I suggest you cut out the protein shakes for a fortnight and keep up the cardio and also try to get some time on a treadmill as they are very effective in losing weight.
Avatar n tn I have mucus build up and have to constantly clear my throat when my vitamin D levels are low. If you haven't had your vitamin D levels checked then I highly recommend doing so. Optimal range is 40 - 60 ng/mL (100 - 150 nmol/L). I too have hypothyroidism (Hashimoto's thyroiditis) and also have autoimmune pernicious anaemia (which is why I have chronic gastritis although I can't feel any pain).
Avatar m tn Harvard researchers put pre-obese people (they had just lost 10-15 percent of their body weight) on three different diets—a low-fat, high-carb diet; a low-glycemic diet with fewer carbs; and a high-protein, high-fat, Atkins-style diet. Each participant ate the same number of calories on each diet, yet at the end of the study, they found that people burned the most calories at rest while on the Atkins diet.

1597722 tn?1297379694 Whilst exercising, it is a good idea to take measurements instead of weighing yourself. Excersing causes you to build muscle mass whilst losing weight, which can be discouraging when you hop on the scales! It is best to eat 5 - 6 healthy meals a day and exercise for at least 30mins a day. Walking is great. Don't go into it too quickly though or you will burn yourself out!
Avatar f tn To gain weight you need to increase your protein intake. I suggest a high protein shake, such as body builders drink. Take it as a supplement not as a meal. This works to lose weight if one is too fat (as a meal replacement) and will cause weight gain for those that are too thin. Contrary to what some might think, weight bearing ie weight lifting, builds muscle mass and increases weight also. This does not mean you need to look like a male body builder, but it does help with weight gain.
899491 tn?1243773627 If you want to follow a healthy diet then you should count your carbohydrates properly. In order to do this (if you don't already know,) take your label and subtract the fiber from the total carbohydrates. Ignore the part that says sugar (this is already included in the total carbohydrates.) You should have 45-60 carbohydrates per meal and 15 for a snack. But, if you already eat more carbs than that slowly reduce your intake or you'll just go crazy. Hope this helps.

Avatar f tn Your best bet is to gradually build up to 30 minutes of brisk walking two to four times a week. Regardless of your starting point, you should be able to reach this goal in two weeks. Then you can try “run-walking,” where you alternate between five minutes of running and one minute of walking. Keep up that cycle for 30 minutes, and perform the workout up to four times a week for three weeks.
