Abilify for bipolar children

Common Questions and Answers about Abilify for bipolar children

abilify

Avatar f tn Its rare but possible for a child to have bipolar disorder. If he is diagnosed with Asperger's that is a developmental disability and although those can have behavioral problems that can be severe they don't generally respond to medication like psychiatric disabilities such as bipolar or ADHD but both diagnoses can occur together. They need to provide specific diagnoses as for follow up and treatment and you should discuss this further with them.
569026 tn?1216982293 I have mixed stat bipolar I so it works great for me. Give it a go, you will know within a few weeks, Abilify kicks in quick. Well it did for me! I love not "swinging" anymore and I feel stable most of the time. I get a little down here and there, but for the most part I am leading a normal life now. Good luck.
Avatar f tn Children who are ADHD usually calm down in twenty to thirty minutes, whereas children who are bipolar may continue to feel and act angry for up to four hours. 3. The degree of “regression” (baby talk) during angry episodes is typically more severe for children who are bipolar. It is rare to see an angry child who is ADHD display disorganized thinking, language, and body position, all of which may be seen in angry bipolar children during a tantrum.
Avatar f tn thanks for your response i believe abilify is approved for children the doctors have mentioned it to me before. The risperdal seems very heavy duty to me i would like to take care of more than one problem with one medication i will read more about abilify.
Avatar n tn seroquel, Abilify, Risperdal, Geodon), even though it has become quite common to prescribe these medications to young children. The FDA has not approved most antipsychotics for the treatment of Bipolar Disorder in children. Find out which meds have been approved for the treatment of specific disorders, and get a second opinion. Also, please be advised that there is only clinical support for the diagnosis of early onset Bipolar Disorder.
Avatar f tn my son dustin who is 10 has been taking 4mg of risperdal for the treatment of bipolar-mood disorders for about 3 years his pshyciatrist about 2 weeks ago cut the dose in half to try to wean him off slowly over a two month period the past week he has been real emotional could someone please tell me if there is another type of medication that works as well as resperdal without any of the harmful side effects of resperdal
569043 tn?1216845586 Hi, I have been diagnosed with Manic Bipolar Disorder and I am currently taking Abilify. I was simply wondering if this prescription can possibly affect the patterns of a menstrual cycle??
Avatar f tn ok so i have bipolar 1 disorder and i stopped taking abilify on my own because of my weight gain and my doctor said i have to take sumthing so he put me on geodon...i took it last nite and i woke up this morning light headed the i took the pill i was surpose to this morning and it made me feel worst like i was about to faint so i went to sleep and i slept for 6 hours and 30 minutes and im still sleepy so i mite have to go back to abilify...
Avatar f tn Its not one that is used here in the UK, over here depakote and lithium are used as first line treatment for bipolar. However it is a treatment for BP. With your psychiatrists help you may need to try out these medications to see which suits you best.
1356915 tn?1277344103 I was wondering how Abilify added to an anti-depressant affects a bipolar II? Will it cause Mania?
1499921 tn?1308446605 My brother still takes it to this day. Abilify made it hard for me to control my weight and motivation. I was thought to have bipolar disorder however since I have been away from my adoptive mom I have had no symptoms of mental illness. I think the first couple of weeks you are on it you are great. However, after that first month you’re less in a state of control. At that point I seem to see that true benefit of the drug is in effect. Abilify is less helpful after the first month.
Avatar f tn I have been taking a number of medications since I turned 21 in 2008, the first being Prozac, Adderall, and Seroquel. I was only prescribed Seroquel for as long as my doctor wanted to "observe possible Bipolar symptoms".... after about 3 months he took me off Seroquel. After years of continued difficulty with bouts of depression, anger/irritability, sleep, I saw a new doctor in 2015 who prescribed Abilify 5mg along with Adderall.
Avatar f tn For bipolar type 2 a typical dose would be 2.5 to 5 mg, for bipolar type 1 a typical dose would be 15 to 25 mg a day. The data on Abilify's effectiveness generally find it to be somewhat less effective than other atypicals, at least in the acute phase of treatment. However, some people do amazingly well on it. It doesn't cause as much weight loss as Geodon... it is pretty close to weight neutral...
Avatar f tn Hello. My bipolar son is seven, and his Depakote and lithium are not doing the job for mood swings anymore. He does not have depressive symptoms--he gets manic and hears voices when he is stressed so we also have him on a low dose of risperidone and also Abilify (which has been our miracle drug). Mood swings are getting worse and he is getting more aggressive at home (hits walls).
Avatar n tn I have used Abilify for several years. I have not gained weight but lost it instead. I was started on Depakote though & did gain a signifcant amount of weight. But nothing compared to when they put me on Zyprexa. I had every side effect known while on it. I won't say how much weight, but it was considerable... They have put me on Abilify like I said for years, increasing the dose a lil' at a time, till I now take the maximum dose of 30 mg....
Avatar f tn The target dose for Abilify varies considerably depending on what is being treated. For bipolar 1 (if you have ever had a manic episode) and schizophrenia it is probably 15 - 25 mg. For bipolar 2 and augmentation of an antidepressant for someone with non-bipolar depression it is probably 2 to 10 mg. Also, how long to wait to see the effect depends on what is being treated, for psychosis or mania I would expect results in no more than a week at any given dose.
Avatar n tn Please consider the fact that your ex-wife may be overwhelmed and desparate, as many parents of bipolar children are. I take a lot of meds myself, and they work really well until they need to be adjusted, and then it's really hard. Also, I'd try really hard to work with your ex to get the best combo of drugs. Like it or not, she needs to be part of the solution.
Avatar m tn Abilify is actually an antipsychotic drug that has anti-depressant properties. Usually Abilify is used for schizophrenia, bipolar disorders and as an adjunct therapy (add on therapy) for major depression. The treatment prescribed depends on your psychiatrist’s assessment of your case. However, the dose prescribed is the lowest for the drug. Treatment for depression usually begins with a low dose of SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors). Some doctors prescribe benzodiazepines too.
Avatar f tn ve just found out I am pregnant and I have been taking Abilify (Aripirazole) and Lamictal (Lamotrigine) for the last year, against bipolar disorder, my doctor recommended to reduce it slowly and then stop it. He said that I have taken it so far wouldn't harm the baby. I am still very worried and wondered if anybody has any experience with this. Thank you!
Avatar f tn I am on Wellbutrin and Abilify now and they are working together very well. I no longer have symptoms of being bipolar! I LOVE LOVE abilify. It balanced my sleep patterns again and I feel so much better on it. It is great for mixed state bipolar, which I am. I had side effects in the beginning and started on 5mg. I am now on 10mg and doing quite well. At first all that happened to me is I got constipated and have more acne.
1564087 tn?1308947518 Only side effect I really noticed from Abilify was weight gain but this was because it made me start eating every 3 hours and become obsessed with food I guess. I take Abilify for psychotic symptoms associated with my diagnosis of schizophrenia.

12268405 tn?1427853361 Hello! I was recently diagnosed with bipolar disorder by a primary doctor in a mental health facility. I am currently taking 5mg of Abilify and 30mg of Remeron. Today I am going to see a NP to possibly change my medicine or add something in for anxiety. I will keep this thread updated on what happens. I'm nervous about if the NP is going to change my medication or not. Not to mention that my IBS is acting up, too. I just thought I would introduce myself formally.
447130 tn?1225470866 Hey! Most medications take anywhere between 6 weeks to 2 months to really start working. Just hang in there. You should feel some difference after a month and it will grow stronger from that point. There are several books out there. I bought a book called "Bipolar Disorder, A Guide For Patients and Families". I like it. It has a good overview of the different levels of BP. Here are some good websites too. www.nami.org www.bipolarhelpcenter.com www.crazymeds.org www.
