Zyrtec for dogs

Common Questions and Answers about Zyrtec for dogs

zyrtec

Avatar f tn Antihistamines are helpful to decrease itch in 30-40% of pollen allergic dogs, and sometimes multiple antihistamines have to be tried in order to find the most effective one for each individual dog, so if benadryl is not helping after 1-2 weeks, you can certainly try zyrtec. 689528 tn?1364135841 s control, like this time of year ,he gets a prednisone per day for 3 or 4 days and then every other day for two or until things calm down. Zyrtec can be expensive, but we actually found a generic brand at the dollar store! $1. for 14 pills, so we clear their shelves! Our poor boy suffered until we found this new vet, every other night, we would do oatmeal baths, benedryl cream, benedryl pills, alcohol rubs, ice.. it was heartbreaking. We can totally relate.
Avatar m tn She has taken Benadryl ( 75 mg twice a day for a month ), then three Zyrtec a day for 3 to 4 weeks, now she is taking Claritin ( three a day ). No real relief. She took prednisone for two weeks while taking Zyrtec, and got complete relief. But, the scratching, biting started again as we were weaning her off the prednisone ( when she was down to one tab every other day ). The next drug we are considering is cyclosporine. I am seeking any one's experience with this treatment. Please advise.
Avatar f tn The amount of Zyrtec I was told to give to Akira is only 1/4 of the adult human dosage. This is much smaller than the children's dosage, which is 1/2 of the adult human dosage. I would never ever give medications to Akira without her first seeing her doctor. I do know that no one should ever give Tylenol to their pets. Tylenol is definitely toxic to both dogs and cats. In fact, some of us humans can't even take the stuff.
Avatar f tn Im allergic to the horses the dogs the cat the hay my rabbits...
Avatar n tn i have been struggling with allergies for about ten years. its gotten alot worse over the last three..have been tested i am severely allergic to all tree pollens grass and ragweed pollen mold and dogs..i have tried everything ( including the drops under your tongue) nothing reaaly helps i am tired of feeling like this all time..
Avatar f tn I was told to take zyrtec. Now I have a rash on my upper thighs. Is it the generic zyrtec? Would the regular Zyrtec do the same? Have you ever heard of Diamox being prescribed for Meneire's disease? I find nothing in the literature about it and am hesitant to take it as it makes me very tired. I need to sleep about 3 hours a day when I take it. I don't want to experience vertigo again.
Avatar f tn One that is particularly bad in this regard is Allegra and it kept my daughter without sleep for three nights. Zyrtec is OK and of course Benadryl is too.
Avatar m tn Many of the good ones have gone over the counter now, like Zyrtec. As for prescription meds, many pet owners with allergies swear by Flonase. I've heard good reviews of taking a cocktail of both Zyrtec and Flonase. As for bathing the dog every 3-4 days, that's most likely a very poor idea. Talk to your veterinarian. Dogs have different skin than we do, and aren't meant to be bathed frequently; it strips their natural skin oils and dries out their skin.
Avatar m tn This year, after spending the night at a room full of dust and -without my knowledge- cat hair, I went to the hospital because I found it hard to breathe for more than 16 hours (not dying for air but still very tormenting), Zyrtec not working and Symbicort hardly helping. They gave me oxygen and monitored me till the morning of the next day (I stayed the night).
Avatar n tn Has he been scratching frequently? Allergies can cause dry spots on a dogs skin, hot spots is there common termonology, and it is allergy season. My pooch would get them along with other itchy and swollen symptoms. Now he gets zyrtec everyday and the spots and other symptoms have all but disappeared. Check the skin in his ears, and around his belly. If you notice red blotches, I would suspect allergies. Consult a reputable vet to be sure. Good luck.
Avatar f tn newly diagnosed - allergic to corn, dust mites , dust and dogs. I live in the country, on a dirt road, next to a corn field and I own a Rottweiler( indoor dog, downstairs only but a severe mama's boy) I can live with the exhaustion, the itching etc but my hair is slowly falling out. Recently told by doctor I could have psoriasic(SP?) arthritis. can I stop the hair loss?
Avatar f tn My daughter brought her two little shitzu dogs to visit for a few days and had not treated them with the flea preventative that she usually uses, because the weather had been cold and she didn't think there would be a problem. Well, we had some warm days and the dogs brought fleas into the house. Both she and I have a bad allergic reaction to the bites and my husband does not. I flea bombed the house and am still feeling bites. I itch all over and develop bad rash.
Avatar m tn It is helpful in approximately 80% of allergic dogs to control itch. Cyclosporin is given orally daily for 4-6 weeks, then the dose and frequency is slowly decreased to the lowest possible dose needed for comfort. Cyclosporin has fewer side effects than steroids, but because it is still an immunosuppressive drug, regular physical examinations with labwork should be performed in pets on long term treatment.
Avatar n tn Instead you will be aggravating your allergy. For you, avoidance of dogs is the mainstay of therapy. But if you can’t part with your dog then you can spray areas where your dogs spend their time (carpets, sofas) with an anti allergen spray. . Wash your hands after having contact with your pet. Bath the dog at least once or twice a week and wipe the dog with a wet cloth or hand towel daily as dog allergens also attach to a dog’s fur, which carries the allergens about.
Avatar n tn Should we try the Zyrtec? I am scared that this is only going to get worse and I feel so sorry for her. Whenever her lip swells people talk about her. I had been giving her Benadryl when the lips swell but is that really helping her since it is not truly an allergy? I have a friend that says she has the same thing and she takes Zyrtec and Pepcid at night, she says it is the combination of the 2 drugs, and then when her lip swells she has to take Prednisone.
Avatar f tn //www.healthline.com/health/childrens-health/zyrtec-child-allergies#talk-with-your-doctor Flonase is a bit different. I assume you were also buying that over the counter? This too is generally regarded as safe but is recommended to only be used 2 months out of the year unless your doctor has said otherwise. It's a nasal steroid. These have been associated with usually insignificant slowing of growth. https://www.post-gazette.
Avatar m tn Did you talk to your vet first about giving him over counter meds, there are some over the counter meds that are safe for dogs but you should have asked you vet first benadryl claritin and zyrtec are safe but a vet could help and tell you what is safe dose for your dog. What is causing the skin allergies fleas, food, to help him in the long run what never is causing the allergy needs to be addressed and treated.
Avatar f tn dust is by no means the main irritant for dogs. More suspect, would be household cleaning products, air fresheners, detergents, bleaches, bathroom cleaners, furniture polishes, even scented oils etc. Even something from the vacuum cleaner or tumble dryer. Our modern houses contain many things which can upset dogs badly. With dog in mind I only use two household cleaning products....laundry detergent, and liquid dish detergent (which is rinsed off obsessively).
Avatar n tn For about 4 years now, every once in while, I have a problem with hives where I will get one or two hives on my body that come and go and always respond to taking a benadryl or even using topical benadryl spray. On top of this, when these hives begin occurring, I have also noticed a transient increase and decrease in the size of the lymph nodes right behind my jaw and below my ear that also comes and goes.
Avatar f tn Benadryl, Claritin and Zyrtec for canine patients since the combination seems to help just a bit more than a single antihistamine alone. However please discuss antihistamine use with your veterinarian before instituting. There is another prescription anti-itch product called Apoquel, which will help but it has side effects and Apoquel should be discussed with your veterinarian to see if it is right for your dog.
Avatar f tn I got the ok on zyrtec during pregnancy from my allergist, OB, and pharmacist. I am positive that zyrtec is ok.
