Zyprexa and weight loss

Common Questions and Answers about Zyprexa and weight loss

zyprexa

Avatar f tn I have tried Seroquel (I reacted badly to that and had to come off it after a week), Depakote (which made me gain weight and left my mood very flat and did not help with the irratibility) as well as various anti-depressants (which of course made bipolar worse) and Metazapine (which caused muscle twitching). Is anybody else taking Zyprexa, if so how have you found it. Any advice, experiences would be much appreciated. I am finding the whole thing very difficult.
1082697 tn?1260064616 Sounds like that Celexa was pooping out on you and you needed the Zyprexa to jump start it. Same thing has happened to me on more than a few antidepressants. Lithium also makes for a good booster drug, but most people don't try it as an add on because they think it's only for Bi-polar.
739988 tn?1386672969 Try 6 small meals a day with a protien and carb in small portions. I take ayprexa and I have lost 46 pounds and I am not diabetic I love my zyprexa and I am not going to give it up. I did gain weight at first on it but I have since lost the weight. It is possible to keep the weight off on zyprexa.
1655289 tn?1326042889 I am on geodone and lost my Ziprexa weight. Problem is though now I am too skinny and having troubles keeping weight on. So I went from one extreme to the other. Personally being overweight was easier than being so skinny.
Avatar m tn Topamax was prescribed to counteract the weight gain from Zyprexa and then Abilify. I am going to see my pdoc about my metformin venture. I had a saliva test done recently and found my seritonin level was extremely low. Started Deplin and 5HTP and stopped all AD's what a difference.
Avatar f tn Well that's very great news. Some of us are on medications that don't cause weight gain and it is much better. But some of us still are and the medications still work and don't cause other problems. For myself, the mood stabilizer I take Clonidine causes weight gain. I bought some chocolates today and I had already eaten dessert. I was going to snack on them anyway but I told myself not to or the weight gain would start so I didn't.
Avatar n tn Weight gain is a common side effect with both Zyprexa and Depakote. There are other medications to treat bipolar disorder that do not have weight gain as a side effect. Perhaps you could discuss this with your prescribing doctor. Google "bipolar + phelps" for an educational website that has a section on weight gain with bipolar meds.

559058 tn?1215810834 I'm bp, been on Zyprexa for 5 yrs off and on, gained weight of course, and know that it has tons of other side effects. But I know Depakote is not without side effects either -- like constipation, liver damager etc. What's worse? Plus, I know it causes weight gain also. What do you guys think? Thanks!
Avatar f tn Hello, I took zyprexa (antipsychotic) for 4 years and have taken cymbalta (antidepressant) for 5 years. I gained a lot of weight (50lbs), and started to have insulin resistance problems and high glucose levels. I was put on metformin 500mg once a day for a year. I was told that if I lost the weight my numbers would go back to normal. I lost 40lbs, I am exercising and eating healthy. My doctor told me that I could quit metformin.
Avatar f tn Hi there, Concerta is quite well known to cause weight loss, common complaints of appetite being suppressed, not being hungry, feeling full etc occur in all ages and gender. Significant weight loss is probably one of the more common reasons for a change in medication, so i would definitely recommend discussing your weight loss concerns with your prescribing dr.
Avatar n tn I took Ativan and Zyprexa together along with Lexapro with no problems other than being a zombie and fattening up my body to 116lbs--which is half of my two pregnancy weights. So--I got off the Zyprexa and now take Lexapro and Ativan (2mg) as needed. I really hated Zyprexa--it made me have a Turtle Brain....
Avatar f tn hi, im a 23yr old woman who experienced her first episode in october last year, i was at first on 20mg of zyprexa and 1000 mg of epilim when i was in the hospital, and have slowly come down to 1.25 mg of zyprexa and 200mg epilim, been on the 1.25 mg of zyprexa for around a week now and want to reduce further, any advice on how to get down to nothing without going mental! went cold turkey off the meds in nov last year and it didnt go too well.
3136619 tn?1345387321 I am wondering if anyone has tried Zydis. I haven't heard much about it on these boards. I've gained enough weight on regular Zyprexa and wonder if anyone has had fewer side effects with Zydis.
Avatar f tn I have been on it for 6 weeks now and I have gained a lot of weight. Is it all possible to lose weight while taking this med?? I also always feel really exhausted, lacking energy to do what i use to. Has anyone found that their mind switches off when taking it, like I find it difficult to to do anything, I can think about it but not actually get up to do it, like my head is switched off.
Avatar m tn Then, about 2 ½ years ago I had a near-psychotic meltdown, mostly about the devil and evil spirits, and was diagnosed with OCD and prescribed Anafranil and Zyprexa, which helped with the irrational thinking and obsessive thoughts a little. Between now and then, I have been diagnosed with OCD, Social anxiety disorder, GAD, major depressive disorder, ADHD, and most recently, aspergers/high functioning autism.
497950 tn?1255863927 I am on Neurontin and Celexa right now which is great but I can still feel myself going up and down all the time. Or even if I have to go back on Zyprexa has anyone NOT gained weight on it? People told me I would gain weigh on Celexa and I haven't.
Avatar n tn The main risk for all antipsychotics long term is tardive dyskinesia but that is worth the risk/benefit analysis. The one side effect of concern that differs from one antipsychotic to another is that of weight gain and the potential of diabetes and with that one Zyprexa has the most risk out of all of them. I when I was on Zyprexa gained 35 pounds. However, that starts with weight gain and if that doesn't happen in him it should not be a problem.
Avatar n tn Hello all, I have been diagnosed with Generalized anxiety disorder and bipolar disorder, but I have been struggling for months with appetite problems, rapid weight loss, decreased vision, muscle spasms and twitching, headaches, and just about every other symptom of hyperthyroidism, but when I went to the doctor last (a few months ago when it all began) they took a blood sample to check and said that my levels of whatever they check for were normal.
Avatar f tn However each person responds differently to each medication and it depends on what your psychiatrist is trying to treat. The main concerns I had with that were sedation and weight gain and those are not uncommon although as before each person's reaction is different. It would be worthwhile to discuss all this with your psychiatrist though.
Avatar n tn There are even some meds, especially antidepressants, that cause weight loss in some and weight gain in others. I gained weight on most mood stabilizers. The biggest culprits for me were Depakote, Remeron- an antidepressant, and Zyprexa- an antipsychotic. Now I take Lithobid, which is a slow release lithium. It tends to not cause as many side effects as regular Lithium. I am also on Seroquel. I was finally able to lose all of the weight I gained.
Avatar f tn I also think these pounds are fairly superficial since I have also been on my period and my weight tends to spike at the beginning then fall once it's over. I'm not sure if I'm really making any sense.. my concentration is really low and so is my energy.
Avatar m tn i came of Zyprexa last year because of high cholesterol and trigliceride levels. i had to fight to come off in a way. i was told there are no withdrawal symptoms. i slowly tappered off the medication over months and still had terribly sleep problems, night sweats , constant nausea, and appetite loss. on an emotional level every trauma that happened in my life came up. i cried more in three months than in my whole life together.
1257808 tn?1322762215 Zyprexa is known for causing significant weight gain. Many meds make us really hungry all of the time. If your concerned about weight it is really important for you to look up the side effects of a med before you choose to take it or not. There are meds that are weight neutral. It's a shame so many dr's don't take that into consideration when prescribing these drugs. They don't have to carry the weight, we do! I will not take a drug that is weight gaining no matter what.
