Zyprexa weight gain doctors

Common Questions and Answers about Zyprexa weight gain doctors

zyprexa

Avatar m tn A psychiatrist would have to designate a specific titration schedule for the Zyprexa and also would know what is the lowest therapeutic dose as well. Zyprexa is the antipsychotic with the greatest potential of weight gain. There are other choices. This could be discussed with the psychiatrist.
Avatar m tn I have been on Prozac for the past 12 years. On Zyprexa I began to experience Edema and weight gain, which was not great considering I have battled an eating disorder for the past 18 years. I called my doctor and he told me to just stop taking the zyprexa and the edema would go away. I asked him if I should wean down and he said no that there are no withdrawal symptoms.
Avatar n tn i felt like it wasn't doing anything for my head space [still manically depressed then thru the roof high] and i was just gaining weight like crazy. i put on 15 kilos in 2 months. the weight gain is making me skip meals [i haven't eaten anything in 2 days]. i can't sleep at night - i always wake up after a couple of hours of sleep with crazy, crazy intense dreams. i have now a really fast heart beat and my gp has prescribed blood pressure medicine.
Avatar n tn If you see an association of your weight gain with Paxil, by discontinuing Paxil and continuing your level of exercise and diet, you should see an improvement of your weight. However, if your weight gain persists, I consult your physician to consider other causes of your persistent weight gain. Anxiety Disorders are also commonly treated with Cognitive-Behavioral therapy without any use of medications. Consult a mental health professional who specializes in this area of treatment.
Avatar n tn the intake of more calories than you use is what you makes you gain. weight. I did initially gain weight when I first stated the zyprexa but I have since lost what I gained and I am continuing to loose more with healthy diet.30 mins a day exercise Take your thyroid med in the AM when you wake up. wait at least 4 hours before taking any other meds. Take the zyprexa at night before you go to bed. try do get into the same routine every night.
874521 tn?1424120397 The diabetes is pretty common, serious weight gain is a given - death is really rare. Part of the reason it stays on the market is because it works for psychosis so dang well. It is the only drug I have ever been on that can quiet my brain. It is such a nice feeling. I really miss that feeling. Unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately considering the side effects) it spikes my cholesterol and I can't take it anymore. I take Zelox which helps some. It works about 50% of what Ziprexa did.
1082697 tn?1260068216 before i took zprexa, i was losing weight. i hope i can continue. i do not have a big appetite. so i do not think i will gain any weight. thanks again so much.
Avatar n tn A word to the wise, watch your diet, zyprexa is a big weight gainer and if they put you on a mood stabilizer refuse depakote. You'll most likely gain weight. feel free to E-mail me good luck! I know it's hard.
Avatar n tn bascially the reason for the background was they put me on buspar because it was a really good med for anxiety without weight gain side effects. adn ive been ok and actually lost a lot of weight.
Avatar m tn agitated than it is manic, per se, The Zyprexa works well for this, except for its notorious weight-gain side effects. I just can't handle the weight issues. Does anyone know of a another drug, that perhaps comes in a rapid-release form, that would make sense as a replacement for the Zyprexa? I'd prefer to take something that can be used on the as needed basis. I will ask my doctor, of course, but wanted to see about other people's experiences. Thanks!
Avatar f tn Some are worse for it than others but as monkeyc says there are steps you can take to help keep the weight off. I will say that depakote is known for its side effect of weight gain, I didn't gain a lot on it but it was more than I wanted. It is often called depa-bloat! HOWEVER, it does depend on your dosage and your metabolic rate. On a lower dose I gained no weight at all. Depakote can increase your craving for sweet things and a lot of the weight is water based as with lithium.
Avatar n tn Most frustrating, I've noticed that since I stopped taking both, my weight gain has accelerated. Any ideas as to how long I need to endure this or ideas for correcting my metabolism? Thanks.
Avatar f tn All atypical (from Risperdal onwards) antipsychotics are FDA approved as mood stabilizers. Zyprexa is a very effective mood stabilizer but it has the strongest potential of weight gain and sedation. If you felt that it was effective for you and that it would be beneficial you could discuss it with your psychiatrist as to whether it would be worthwhile to start it again but there are other options in the same class of medication but every person responds differently to each medication.
Avatar n tn My doctor has stopped prescribing zyprexa altogether. The PDR classifies zyprexa as 'severe' for causing weight gain and diabetes and seroquel as 'moderate'. Of course the 50 year old Thorazine didn't cause diabetes and is many times cheaper but it could cause tardive dyskinesia. Where Eli Lilly's negligence comes in,is their KNOWING and not informing consumers (black box warning) until the FDA demanded it.
Avatar n tn He is on his second antidepresent called Elavil and now they are wanting to add Zyprexa to be taken with the Elavil. Lots of other sides but these seem to be the worse at the moment. Going into his 5th month of treatment. Pretty much a struggle the entire time. Today first day back to work in weeks. Viral counts almost undetectable, however the ALT and AST remain above the 150's. Much more to say but for now just needing feedback on this new drug they want to try.
Avatar f tn org is a good site where you can type in medications and it will tell you the number of people who had each side effect. For instance, doctors will tell you Zoloft does not make you gain weight, yet 10% of people do, and it is the highest side effect reported! So do your research, and good luck. Don't believe doctors completely.
Avatar m tn he was going to the hospital to get off zyprexa safefly but because they read into the withdrawls instead of who he was they wouldn't take him off anything unless he was on something else. I am so tired to doctors telling me to go off zyprexa but put him something else. It doesn't work, because you don't know which medicine is giving him the withdrawls. For all the people taking zyprexa, my son is living proof you can get very bad side effects coming off zyprexa.
675329 tn?1297291978 Hi medicmommy So am I right in assuming that the question regarding BP meds is in regard to your husband? The question about weight gain from meds - is for you? Weight gain is a side effect listed on many medications and as some of the others have pointed out it doesn't necessarily mean you will gain weight. I have been on some that caused weight gain - WITHOUT OVEREATING - sorry just wanted to make that clear :) The weight I gained was water weight.
Avatar n tn When my Psychatrist decided to try me on Topamax it was because of my anieity over my weight gain with the standard mood stabilizers. Within these past two years I have lost 38 pounds taking this medicine. I will say that I have done low- carb about 8 of those months but ashamed to say no exercise.I have suffered with migrane headaches for about 10 years - they are gone . I think i have had one mild one .
Avatar n tn I when I was on Zyprexa gained 35 pounds. However, that starts with weight gain and if that doesn't happen in him it should not be a problem. If it is there are other antipsychotics but Zyprexa has the best mood stabilization ability. If you want full information go to the medication websites. The psychiatrist he sees outpatient after he is released can adjust the dosages of his medications and potentially reduce them if he remains stable. Speak to them about that then.
Avatar f tn I feel stuck in a over weight body that I'm so not use to I gain 30kg from zyprexa in 6mth and I was already over weight before that so now I'm double a healthy weight that I should be and I cant seem to fine exercise that does not make me sick. why do I get sick with some thing when I try to push my body. Blood work is prefect and so was my laying ECG/EKG. i wanted a tilt table test or stress test but my dr says I have to have chest pain.
Avatar n tn Have you considered that their may be another reason for the weight gain. I know other antidepressants are known to cause weight gain, but again have never heard of that with prozac in particular. Good luck and please talk to your doctor before going off any meds esp. antidepressants sometimes have to be tapered off to decrease chances of rebound depression.
Avatar f tn as iladvocate says zyprexa can cause weight gain even on a normal diet which is frustrating as most of the meds have this side effect. i just started seroquel and am losing weight daily and am hoping to be soon back to normal. please don't panic, it sometimes takes a while to find the right combination of meds for each different person.
Avatar f tn i was diagnosed with bipolar 6 years ago after a head injury and was taking zyprexa. Soon after, I was hospitalized with pancreatitis. The doctors immediatly took me off the zyprexa. Since then I have quit all alcohol and never did take drugs. I am currently taking Lexapro, but i don't feel it is what i need. I am constantly tierd, gaining weight, have constant muscle pain, especially in my feet and legs. I still suffer from mood swings, the ups and downs.
Avatar n tn Is your medication helping with the symptons? if so why would you want to go of it if the only reason is the weight gain. Hopefully if your symptoms are controlled you would be able to go for a walk and do some exercise. I know that sounds simplistic when you feel like your life is falling apart around you but staying locked in your fear of further panic attacks and second guessing what might happen if you come of seroguel is not helping you move forward to getting your health back.
589824 tn?1238800413 Now with that being said there are meds that make things taste better ,feel better etc I am on zyprexa and celexa.I did gain weight initially on this combobut I have since lost that weight and I am continuing to loose more. Avatar n tn I lost all my weight and started to get my old life back, It assisted me so much that I have completed my degree at UNI and recemtly married, but the motto of this post is Zyprexa, it is known worldwide the affects it has on people taking it, it puts sooooooo much weight on its outrageous, not all people gain weight on Zyprexa but most people do and from this it changes the world for them from high blood pressure, putting on weight, high cholesterol, heart trouble, lack of exercise and can pro
Avatar n tn and it is possible to control your weight while on zyprexa. I have been on it for 7 years and at first I did gain gain weight but I have since lost all that I have gained on the zyprexa eat small 6 meals a day and exercise even if its just a brisk 30 minute walk. It will also help with the depression. No caffiene and no sugar as these both aggravate depression in bi polars.
